Managing And Maintaining A Vibrant Summer Undergraduates Research Experiences Program, Karelle Aiken, Ria Ramoutar
Managing And Maintaining A Vibrant Summer Undergraduates Research Experiences Program, Karelle Aiken, Ria Ramoutar
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)
An intensive undergraduate research experience is a game changer for student success. Directing a summer undergraduate research experiences (SURE) program has many challenges. Faculty may find themselves involved in almost every aspect, from issues such as research mentorship and budget management to seemingly minuscule ones like solving glitches with Wi-Fi access and parking tickets. Regardless of the type of task, all, large or small, will impact the overall quality of the participants’ experiences. Ensuring that the program remains vibrant and relevant from year to year requires organization that also allows for flexibility and creativity. In 2017, we will direct the …

Using Ranked Auxiliary Covariate As A More Efficient Sampling Design For Ancova Model: Analysis Of A Psychological Intervention To Buttress Resilience, Rajai Jabrah, Hani Samawi, Robert Vogel, Haresh Rochani, Daniel Linder
Biostatistics: Faculty Publications
Drawing a sample can be costly or time consuming in some studies. However, it may be possible to rank the sampling units according to some baseline auxiliary covariates, which are easily obtainable, and/or cost efficient. Ranked set sampling (RSS) is a method to achieve this goal. In this paper, we propose a modified approach of the RSS method to allocate units into an experimental study that compares L groups. Computer simulation estimates the empirical nominal values and the empirical power values for the test procedure of comparing L different groups using modified RSS based on the regression approach in analysis …

Selected On-Demand Medical Applications Of 3d-Printing For Long-Duration Manned Space Missions, Andres L. Carrano
Selected On-Demand Medical Applications Of 3d-Printing For Long-Duration Manned Space Missions, Andres L. Carrano
Manufacturing Engineering: Faculty Publications (2015-2023)
Recent technological advances in the area of Additive Manufacturing (i.e. 3D printing) allow for exploration of their use within long-duration manned space missions. Among the many potential application domains, medical and dental fabrication in support of crew health is of interest to NASA’s Advanced Exploration Systems directorate. A classification of medical events with their associated response timeline discern between those applications where current 3D printing technologies can provide adequate support. Products and devices that require on-demand fabrication (due to the high level of personal customization) but that can wait for a reasonable (e.g. few hours) fabrication time are the most …

Giving Voice To The “Speechless”: Depictions Of Disability In Television And Identity Politics Of Disability Studies, Ellen M. Hotchkiss
Giving Voice To The “Speechless”: Depictions Of Disability In Television And Identity Politics Of Disability Studies, Ellen M. Hotchkiss
International Critical Media Literacy Conference (2016-2019)
Disability has been an area often overlooked in popular cultural media especially as a main focus of a television show. The few television shows that have made it to mainstream media have the advantage of starting to build connections with audience and society. This allows a deeper understanding of stereotypes and boundary transgressions when it comes to the diverse population of people with disabilities. Exploring these relationships through the new ABC “Speechless” gives several new perspectives to explore relating to disability, identity and family. Disability studies looks from both an outsider and insider perspective on how we view what is …
