Exploring Differences In The Sentiment Analysis Tools Using Twitter Data Concerning Autism Awareness, Sushmita Khan
GS4 Student Scholars Symposium
There are multiple studies analyzing people's conversations through social media data sources such as Facebook and Twitter (Ghiassi et al., 2015, Abbasi et al., 2014, Marquez et al., 2013, Rodrigues et al., 2016). Opinion mining, or sentiment analysis, is commonly applied to social media conversations to discover how people feel and their level of affect toward a specific topic. Multiple methods exist to perform sentiment analysis which can result in different outcomes. The goal of this research is to investigate two methods (sci-kit learn and vader) for calculating the sentiment expressed in user Twitter feeds and to report on the …

Geographic Variation Within The Military Health System, Linda G. Kimsey, Samuel Olaiya, Chad Smith, Andrew Hoburg, Stuart R. Lipsitz, Tracey Koehlmoos, Louis L. Nguyen, Joel S. Weissman
Health Policy & Management: Faculty Publications (2006-2018)
Background: This study seeks to quantify variation in healthcare utilization and per capita costs using system-defined geographic regions based on enrollee residence within the Military Health System (MHS).
Methods: Data for fiscal years 2007 – 2010 were obtained from the Military Health System under a data sharing agreement with the Defense Health Agency (DHA). DHA manages all aspects of the Department of Defense Military Health System, including TRICARE. Adjusted rates were calculated for per capita costs and for two procedures with high interest to the MHS- back surgery and Cesarean sections for TRICARE Prime and Plus enrollees. Coefficients of variation …

With Or Without Nutrients, Sponges Are Boring: The Effects Of Eutrophication On Bioerosion, Amber D. Stubler, John M. Carroll, Christopher M. Finelli
With Or Without Nutrients, Sponges Are Boring: The Effects Of Eutrophication On Bioerosion, Amber D. Stubler, John M. Carroll, Christopher M. Finelli
Biology: Faculty Presentations
Eutrophication, largely due to coastal development and human activities, is an ongoing issue for coastal ecosystems. Excess nutrients can impact ecosystem processes, promote the occurrence of algal blooms, and decrease the overall water quality. One process that may be impacted by eutrophication is the biological breakdown of carbonate material, or bioerosion. Correlative evidence suggests that bioeroding sponges increase in size and abundance along nutrient gradients, leading to increased bioerosion rates. However, there have been no experimental studies investigating the direct effects of increased nutrients on sponge bioerosion rates. To determine whether sponge bioerosion of carbonate material is enhanced under eutrophied …

The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, provides a number of ecosystem services and is an important commercial fishery species along US East and Gulf Coasts. Unfortunately, their populations have declined dramatically, due to overharvest, habitat loss, and disease. As both oyster restoration efforts and aquaculture of oysters continues to increase throughout their range, it is important to consider the impacts of a number of potential oyster pests, including the boring sponge Cliona spp. and the pea crab Zaops (Pinnotheres) ostreum on oyster populations. Both of these pests have been demonstrated to reduce oyster growth, condition, and in some instances, reproductive output. …

As human populations increase in watersheds, the Peconic Bay estuary (NY) has experienced increased nitrogen (N) loads, resulting in eutrophication. Stable isotopes can be used as indicators of anthropogenic N sources such as wastewater and fertilizer, and potentially be used to track source-specific N inputs through time. We hypothesized that Peconic Bay scallops (Argopecten irridians) could be proxies for these environmental changes through assimilation of organic matter from surrounding water into their soft tissue and shells. We examined nitrogen stable isotopes (δ15N) from whole soft tissue and shell of scallops collected throughout the Peconic. A strong correlation was …

Coastal biogenic habitats provide a plethora of ecosystem services that enhance the commercial and recreational value of the system. Specifically, shellfish beds play a critical role in improving water quality, creating complex habitat for other commercial species, and serving as a trophic resource for surrounding nutrient-poor habitats. Great South Bay, New York, was historically one of the most productive estuaries in the nation, yet commercial shellfisheries have collapsed here due to overharvest. These filter-feeding shellfish species, in particular hard clams Mercenaria mercenaria, once provided important ecosystem services, including top-down control of phytoplankton blooms. Overharvest of clams has led to …

Recognizing Ourselves And Each Other Through Art Journaling, Amanda J. Hedrick
Recognizing Ourselves And Each Other Through Art Journaling, Amanda J. Hedrick
The D.I.F. Conference (Archived)
One of the best ways to connect with others is to create and share with them. Using art journaling practices, we will reflect on our identities, create art based on those identities, and take a gallery walk to observe and appreciate the diversity of identifications in the room. We’ll then brainstorm ways this kind of activity could be meaningfully used in clubs, classrooms, or other groups to foster empathy, celebrate diversity, and encourage connection.
