Educating Students In Poverty: Building Equity And Capacity With A Holistic Framework And Community School Model, Dan W. Rea, Cordelia D. Zinskie Aug 2017

Educating Students In Poverty: Building Equity And Capacity With A Holistic Framework And Community School Model, Dan W. Rea, Cordelia D. Zinskie

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Educators are often blamed for the achievement gap between low-income and higher income students. We propose to replace the divisive “blame game” with a holistic framework for collaborative action between schools, families, and communities. This 5H Holistic Framework (5HHF) is composed of the 5H protective factors (Health, Hands, Heart, Head, Home). These protective factors holistically address the educational needs and capacities of all students—especially students in poverty—for physical/mental health (Health), safety/security (Hands), social-emotional care (Heart), cognitive development (Head), and family/community support (Home). The 5HHF is used to identify and organize best educational practices and to recommend the community school model …

Building A Culture Of Hope: Exploring Implicit Biases Against Poverty, Emily L. Gibson, Robert D. Barr

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

A Culture of Hope provides a blueprint for schools wanting to meet the social/emotional needs of youth at risk. In working with staff to develop cultures of hope, the influence of implicit biases and prejudices about people who are living in poverty must be addressed. This essay introduces information and research about implicit biases, illustrates the impact of implicit biases on teaching and learning, and shares strategies for raising awareness about implicit biases against poverty in order to build staff consensus around core beliefs and values.

Grit And Agency: A Framework For Helping Students In Poverty To Achieve Academic Greatness, Anindya Kundu Aug 2017

Grit And Agency: A Framework For Helping Students In Poverty To Achieve Academic Greatness, Anindya Kundu

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Recent research in psychology introduces “grit” as a characteristic observable in successful students (Duckworth, 2016). Popular applications of the grit framework can further the notion of "rugged individualism," placing the onus of achievement upon the individual. This perspective can lead failures to be considered the result of deficiencies, overlooking effects of structural factors associated with learning. Sociologically, certain applications of grit can be limited in explaining mobility: they may not address the social contexts of the people they assess; or, they may lack a dynamic understanding of students’ cultures. This article applies a qualitative, sociological framework offering “agency” as a …

Supporting Students Living Below The Poverty Line, H. Richard Milner Iv, Heather B. Cunningham, Ira E. Murray, Adam Alvarez Aug 2017

Supporting Students Living Below The Poverty Line, H. Richard Milner Iv, Heather B. Cunningham, Ira E. Murray, Adam Alvarez

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

In this article, we focus on interrelated mechanisms and practices that support students living below the poverty line. Addressing the needs of students living below the poverty line requires that educators consider both the inside- and outside-of-school realities of students and their families. Before discussing the recommendations, we define poverty and describe the complex ways it may shape student realities. We then discuss why we believe recommendations to support students must account for student realities outside of school. Finally, we outline recommendations for educators interested in becoming “poverty-responsive,” meaning that they discontinue practices that do not support students in poverty …

Layers Of Estrangement: Social-Emotional And Educational Implications Of Homelessness On K–12 Students, Rajni Shankar-Brown Aug 2017

Layers Of Estrangement: Social-Emotional And Educational Implications Of Homelessness On K–12 Students, Rajni Shankar-Brown

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This qualitative case study examines and illuminates the social-emotional and educational experiences of children ages 5 to 18 residing in an urban, family emergency housing shelter located in the Southeastern region of the United States. Data were collected and triangulated through participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Findings revealed deep educational estrangement and adverse impacts on the social-emotional development of children and youth experiencing homelessness. The study suggests an urgent need to provide high-quality educational preparation to public school administrators and teachers working with children living in poverty and experiencing homelessness in the U.S. With persistent and rising child …

Guided Imagery: A Technique To Benefit Youth At Risk, Lisa M. Skeens Aug 2017

Guided Imagery: A Technique To Benefit Youth At Risk, Lisa M. Skeens

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Guided imagery is a valuable intervention strategy that can benefit children who are at risk for social, academic, and mental health problems. Guided imagery is a technique that employs imagination, emotions, and a spectrum of bodily senses (Naparstek, 1994). This particular technique can be applied in community and academic settings to help enhance self-efficacy and mental health functioning for youth at risk. The need to implement creative interventions for youth can be overlooked by the chaos of poverty and social problems in vulnerable communities. Many schools and community agencies carry the burden of managing daily crises with few resources. This …

Do Eye Movements During Shape Discrimination Reveal An Underlying Geometric Structure?, Bradley R. Sturz, Ty W. Boyer, John F. Magnotti, Kent D. Bodily Aug 2017

Do Eye Movements During Shape Discrimination Reveal An Underlying Geometric Structure?, Bradley R. Sturz, Ty W. Boyer, John F. Magnotti, Kent D. Bodily

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Using a psychophysical approach coupled with eye-tracking measures, we varied length and width of shape stimuli to determine the objective parameters that corresponded to subjective determination of square/rectangle judgments. Participants viewed a two-dimensional shape stimulus and made a two-alternative forced-choice whether it was a square or rectangle. Participants’ gaze was tracked throughout the task to explore directed visual attention to the vertical and horizontal axes of space. Behavioral results provide threshold values for two-dimensional square/rectangle perception, and eye-tracking data indicated that participants directed attention to the major and minor principal axes. Results are consistent with the use of the major …

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Strengthening muscles of the back may have various implications for improving functions of daily living, aiding in the transfer of power in throwing, and assist in injury prevention of the shoulder complex. While several versions of the pull-up exist, there is currently no literature comparing their differences. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the electromyographical activity of the latissimus dorsi, posterior deltoid, middle trapezius, and biceps brachii while performing three variations of the pull-up. Resistance-trained men and women (n = 15, age = 24.87 ± 6.52 years) participated in this study by performing traditional pull-ups, suspension device pull-ups, …

Strategies For Improving Profitability Of Rural Hospitals: Are Profitable Hospitals Doing Something Different?, Bettye Apenteng, Angela Peden, Raymona Lawrence, Emmanuel Akowuah, Samuel Opoku, James H. Stephens, Bill Mase Aug 2017

Strategies For Improving Profitability Of Rural Hospitals: Are Profitable Hospitals Doing Something Different?, Bettye Apenteng, Angela Peden, Raymona Lawrence, Emmanuel Akowuah, Samuel Opoku, James H. Stephens, Bill Mase

Center for Public Health Practice & Research

THE TOP FIVE STRATEGIES adopted by rural hospitals for the purposes of improving financial performance included improving patient satisfaction and care experience, adding new service lines or expanding existing service lines, community outreach, employee engagement, and physician engagement. Profitable hospitals were more likely than other hospitals to have implemented cost-cutting and internal and external stakeholder engagement strategies.

Background

Nationwide, hospitals, as well as policy makers, are exploring strategies for improving the financial viability of rural hospitals. These efforts are in response to the critical need for sustainable hospital infrastructure in rural America and the negative impact the lack thereof can …

Cahost: An Excel Workbook For Facilitating The Johnson-Neyman Technique For Two-Way Interactions In Multiple Regression, Stephen W. Carden, Nicholas S. Holtzman, Michael J. Strube

Psychology: Faculty Publications

When using multiple regression, researchers frequently wish to explore how the relationship between two variables is moderated by another variable; this is termed an interaction. Historically, two approaches have been used to probe interactions: the pick-a-point approach and the Johnson-Neyman (JN) technique. The pick-a-point approach has limitations that can be avoided using the JN technique. Currently, the software available for implementing the JN technique and creating corresponding figures lacks several desirable features–most notably, ease of use and figure quality. To fill this gap in the literature, we offer a free Microsoft Excel 2013 workbook, CAHOST (a concatenation of the first …

Weak Relationships Between Three Clinical Assessments And Core Stability Tests, Andy Waldhelm, Li Li Jul 2017

Weak Relationships Between Three Clinical Assessments And Core Stability Tests, Andy Waldhelm, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Core stability measurements are commonly used to identify individuals who may be at risk for athletic injuries. However, the relationship between core stability tests and other clinical assessments used to assess injury risk are not well established. The purpose if this study is to determine the relationships between three clinical assessments and core stability tests. We anticipate the relationships between the three clinical assessments and core stability tests will be low and not significant. Participants included 36 college-aged males and females. The three clinical assessments consisted of the Star Excursion Test and the Frontal Plane Projection Angel (FPPA) of the …
