Observing And Deterring Social Cheating On College Exams, Richard J. Fendler, Michael C. Yates, Jonathan M. Godbey
Observing And Deterring Social Cheating On College Exams, Richard J. Fendler, Michael C. Yates, Jonathan M. Godbey
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This research introduces a unique multiple choice exam design to observe and measure the degree to which students copy answers from their peers. Using data collected from the exam, an empirical experiment is conducted to determine whether random seat assignment deters cheating relative to a control group of students allowed to choose their seats. Empirical results demonstrate a significant decline in measured cheating within the assigned seating sample. This study contributes to the literature by providing a measurement of actual cheating frequency among students, as opposed to relying on reported cheating in anonymous surveys, and by demonstrating that an easily …
Student Learning With Permissive And Restrictive Cell Phone Policies: A Classroom Experiment, Alexander L. Lancaster
Student Learning With Permissive And Restrictive Cell Phone Policies: A Classroom Experiment, Alexander L. Lancaster
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Based on Finn and Ledbetter’s (2013; 2014) work regarding classroom technology policies, this experimental study examined the implementation of a permissive and a restrictive cellular phone policy in two sections of a public speaking course, and the effect of these policies on students’ cognitive and affective learning. College students (N = 31) were assigned to the permissive or restrictive cellular phone policy condition based on the class section of public speaking for which they registered for the Fall, 2016 semester. Results indicated that while there were no differences in cognitive learning, students in the restrictive policy condition reported greater …

Challenges To Disciplinary Knowing And Identity: Experiences Of Scholars In A Sotl Development Program, Janice E. Miller-Young Dr, Michelle Yeo, Karen Manarin
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Faculty members from five years of an annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) development program were invited to participate in a study about the impact of SoTL on their teaching, scholarship, and career trajectory. During semi-structured interviews, many expressed feeling discomfort during their journey into SoTL. A qualitative analysis using the constant comparison method showed that this discomfort was sometimes due to contrasts between SoTL and their discipline’s epistemology, as well as challenges to their identity as a teacher, researcher, and a colleague. We conclude with suggestions for how faculty development and multidisciplinary SoTL communities of practice can be …
A Space Syntax Analysis Of The Relationship Between Function And Form In Facility Layout, Alejandro Teran-Somohano, Alice E. Smith
A Space Syntax Analysis Of The Relationship Between Function And Form In Facility Layout, Alejandro Teran-Somohano, Alice E. Smith
15th IMHRC Proceedings (Savannah, Georgia. USA – 2018)
This paper explores the relationship between a facility’s operation and its form using quantitative techniques provided by Space Syntax. Space Syntax provides quantitative metrics for characterizing the spatial traits of the locations within a facility which can then be related to operational metrics. Instances of the quadratic assignment problem are used to perform spatial and operational analyses on different flow matrices to study the resulting layouts. The effects of different objective functions on facility shapes are also studied.

Synthetic Order Data Generator For Picking Data, Mohammadnaser Ansari, Behnam Rasoolian, Jeffrey S. Smith
15th IMHRC Proceedings (Savannah, Georgia. USA – 2018)
Sample data are in high demand for testing and benchmarking purposes. Like many other fields, warehousing and specifically order picking process are not exempt from the need for sample data. Sample data are used in order picking pro- cesses as a way of testing new methodologies such as new routing and new storage allocation approaches. Unfortunately, access to real order picking data is limited because of confidentiality and privacy issues which make it difficult to obtain practical results from the new methodologies. On the other hand, order data follows a highly complex and correlated structure that cannot be easily extracted …

The Small World Of Material Handling Research, Parag J. Siddique, Kevin Gue, Md Salahuddin Ayuby
15th IMHRC Proceedings (Savannah, Georgia. USA – 2018)
Using data from 88 journals over an 8 year period, we investigate the relationships among researchers in material handling. We apply social network analysis to measure many attributes of the network, including papers published each year, papers published per author, number of collaborators per author, strength of collaboration between authors, and how influential an author is in the network. We observe that collaboration patterns in material handling follow a scale-free structure in the presence of some hub-like researchers. According to social network theory, these hub researchers facilitate rapid dissemination of knowledge in the network. We conclude that the scientific community …

Teaching Health Disparities Awareness In Undergraduate Public Health Courses, Anuli Njoku
Teaching Health Disparities Awareness In Undergraduate Public Health Courses, Anuli Njoku
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Disparities in health outcomes between U.S. population subgroups, related to factors like race/ethnicity, income, and geographic location, are alarming. By integrating health disparities awareness content into the curriculum, academic institutions can play an important role in developing conscious health practitioners to help close gaps in health outcomes. This paper presents the implementation, results and feedback of efforts to incorporate health disparities awareness content into two undergraduate public health courses at a rural Midwestern U.S. university. Throughout this process, the author’s work was supported by a faculty development program. Students completed pre- and post-surveys to report health disparities knowledge and attitudes …

Impact Of Acculturation And Internal And External Influences On Food Consumption Behavior Among Asian American Ethnic Groups, Ryan W. Kota, Sindy Chapa
AMTP Proceedings 2018
Retail food sales in the United States surpassed $5 trillion annually in 2015 and this number is on the rise. As a growing industry, it is important to understand what factors influence consumption. In this paper, the authors report on data collected from an ethnic segment that is growing in terms of overall population and spending power in the U. S.; Asian Americans. Through analyses of internal and external influences, and measurement of acculturation across 1,284 respondents, the authors are able to suggest that more acculturated individuals are more prone to be influenced by external factors (i.e., other foods and …

Why I Purchase What I See On Facebook: Comparing The Impact Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth Between Hispanic And Non-Hispanic Consumers, Nivia Escobar, Sindy Chapa
AMTP Proceedings 2018
This study aims to explore the role of the adoption and consumption of Facebook on Electronic Word-Of-Mouth (eWOM) among Hispanics versus African Americans, Asians, and Non-Hispanics Whites in the United States, whilst exploring the impact of attitudes towards eWOM on the likelihood to purchase something because of the “Likes” on Facebook. A national panel was used to collect the data and an ANOVA test was conducted to test the hypotheses. The results indicated Non-Hispanic White consumers were significantly less likely to use WOM than Hispanic, African Americans and Asians. Overall, Hispanics were found to be more likely than any other …

Gender And Cybersecurity: Consumer Awareness, Experience And Trust, M. Olguta Vilceanu, Kristine Johnson
AMTP Proceedings 2018
In light of the growing epidemic of cyberattacks, it is important to understand how different groups within the general population connect information with attitudes and behaviors. Internet transactions become less of an option and more of a requirement for consumers and the workforce. This study explored the connection between awareness, experience, and trust with the goal of identifying communication strategies that will ultimately steer consumers toward healthy cyberbehaviors. Consumer trust in government and business organizations is the desired status quo for everyone. Awareness and experience are important modifying factors and both are addressable through strategic consumer communication campaigns. Understanding the …

More Than Skin-Deep: Reading Past Whiteness In Hemingway’S “Hills Like White Elephants”, Laura Valeri
Writing & Linguistics: Faculty Publications (1990-2022)
The author argues a much neglected element in the seminal Hemingway's story "Hills Like White Elephant." Reading the story by taking into context a subtext of racial bias lends new interpretation to the story.
