Association Between The Seated Single-Arm Shot-Put Test With Isokinetic Pushing Force, Bryan L. Riemann, George J. Davies

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Context: Previous investigations have examined the reliability, normalization, and underlying projection mechanics of the seated single-arm shot-put (SSASP) test. Although the test is believed to reflect test limb strength, there have been no assessments determining whether test performance is directly associated with upper-extremity strength. Objective: To determine the relationship between isokinetic pushing force and SSASP performance and conduct a method comparison analysis of limb symmetry indices between the 2 tests. Design: Controlled laboratory study. Setting: Biomechanics laboratory. Patients (or Other Participants): Twenty-four healthy and physically active men (n = 12) and women (n = 12). Intervention(s): Participants completed the SSASP …

Opioids And Older Adults-Is There A Problem?, Jennifer E. Hogan Oct 2019

Opioids And Older Adults-Is There A Problem?, Jennifer E. Hogan

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

The Opioid epidemic affects people of all ages; racial, ethnic, sexual and gender minorities; income classes; and geographic areas. Older adults are among the groups affected by this problem because they often use prescription opioids to cope with painful chronic conditions or surgery. Older adults may develop an opioid use disorder, may be a target for crime since they have opioids in the home or maybe raising their grandchildren due to their adult child's addiction. Three different impacts with different needs in terms of resources and referrals.

Disaster Preparedness For The Medically At Risk Non Institutionalized Population, Jennifer E. Hogan

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

During the Snowpocalypse in 2013, people on dialysis suffered excessive stress and adverse health events. Disaster planning can minimize the impact of disasters for those who are medically at risk. Attendees will learn about the medically at risk non institutionalized populations. Presenter will differentiate between vulnerable populations, functional and access needs and medically at risk populations for disaster planning purposes. Attendees will also learn specific strategies on disaster planning with any client who is medically at risk. Presenter will review a specific case example: disaster planning with a person on dialysis.

Your Local Area Agency On Aging: Rockin' The Ages, Peggy Jo Luukkonen Oct 2019

Your Local Area Agency On Aging: Rockin' The Ages, Peggy Jo Luukkonen

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Many people are not aware of the comprehensive programs and services offered through their local Area Agency on Aging (AAA). Participants will get an overview of who the AAA’s serve, what services are provided, and how innovative programs are being developed on an ongoing basis to help meet gaps in the community. AAA’s are no longer just about a noon meal for someone over the age of 60. Many local AAA’s now provide evidenced based wellness programs, hospital and nursing home transitions programs, caregiver assistance programs, dementia programs, and innovative assistive technology programs that launch rocket science technology from the …

Using Experiential Techniques With Older Adult Clients, April Miller, Jordan Raulerson, Sarah Anklam Oct 2019

Using Experiential Techniques With Older Adult Clients, April Miller, Jordan Raulerson, Sarah Anklam

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Research has shown that counselors and other providers often show bias when working with older adults, which can contribute to feelings of reduced self-esteem, independence, and self-concept in older adult clients. Play therapists are skilled in working with clients using experiential techniques that require less language engagement, are often more enjoyable, and can be more effective in allowing clients to work toward goals and overall wellness than more traditional talk therapy techniques.

Making Sense Of Caregiving, Timmarie Williams

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Did you know that if you are the main caregiver for a parent, spouse or child with a serious illness, disability or diagnosis, you are probably more stressed than you realize? And you are not alone. Many caregivers experience high levels of strain from their role. As a result, they face unique levels of burden, stress, anxiety, depression, and disruption of their own personal well-being and social activities. This talk explores the psychological ramifications of caregiving and offers some practical solutions for caregivers to reduce the strain.

"Shacking Up" And Settling Down: Cohabitation In Middle And Late Adulthood, Nadia Flanigan, Jennifer Zorotovich Oct 2019

"Shacking Up" And Settling Down: Cohabitation In Middle And Late Adulthood, Nadia Flanigan, Jennifer Zorotovich

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Rates of cohabitation have increased sharply among adults of all ages over the past few decades, particularly among adults ages 50 and older. Researchers have observed key differences between younger cohabiters and older cohabiters. Whereas younger cohabiters are more likely to be cohabiting as a path towards marriage, older cohabiters are more likely to be cohabiting after a previous marriage that may have ended in divorce. With increasing divorce rates among adults 50 and older, rates of cohabitation among this age group may continue to rise. Also compared to younger cohabiters, older cohabiters are more likely to view their relationship …

Associations Among Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices Toward Palliative Care Consultation Service In Healthcare Staffs: A Cross-Sectional Study, Li-Chun Huang, Ho-Jui Tung, Pei-Chao Lin

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

Background

The palliative care consultation service (PCCS) of the National Health Insurance payments has been promoted in Taiwan since 2011, although few studies have been conducted on healthcare staffs’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding PCCS in Taiwan; consequently, the main objective of this study was to explore any correlations regarding the above by cross-sectional design using convenience sampling.

Methods

A total of 210 healthcare staff members were enrolled from a regional hospital from June 1, 2018, to September 30, 2018. Questionnaire items on the Palliative Care Consultation Service Inventory (KAP-PCCSI) were used to measure healthcare staff’s knowledge, attitudes, and practices …

Successful User Experience Active Listening + Creative Solutions = Building Relationships, Engaging Older Adult Patrons, Kay Coates, Dylitchrous Thompson

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

Presentation given at Georgia Libraries Conference

A brief discussion on ways librarians can use design thinking strategies to support older adult library users. With more university libraries serving the public, academic librarians must be prepared to serve non-traditional students and multi-generational patrons. In particular, older adult library patrons often surface with unique research quests ranging from leisurely bylines, life-long learning to ancestral pursuits and more. Assessing their distinct needs yields opportunities to serve this population of users through relationship building, knowledge-based content, and access privileges. Design thinking solutions can equip academic librarians to effectively engage, support, and satisfy the diverse …

Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit, Samuel Opoku, Bettye Apenteng, Charles F. Owens, Linda Kimsey, Imaobong B. Ekpo, Emmanuel Akowuah, Michela Hizine, Oluwadamilola Onifade, Bill Mase

Center for Public Health Practice & Research

Background

Eight rural hospitals have closed in Georgia within the last decade, and more are financially distressed. In 2016, Georgia legislation created a state income tax credit for individuals and corporations that donate to qualifying non-profit rural hospitals of their choice. This law, the first of its kind in the US, was intended to provide struggling hospitals with financial support to improve viability. Using a mixed- methods approach, this study assessed the perspective of hospital executives concerning the program, examined community awareness of the program, and evaluated how hospitals used the money to enhance access to care for rural populations.
