Aware I Am Alone: Intersections Of Solitude And Mindfulness, Richard Cleveland Jan 2020

Aware I Am Alone: Intersections Of Solitude And Mindfulness, Richard Cleveland

Leadership, Technology & Human Development: Faculty Publications

This paper explores the relationship between solitude and mindfulness. Parallels between the two constructs exist, allowing them to complement each other in furthering the well-being of individuals and communities. Three perspectives through which mindfulness may assist in forming foundational understandings of solitude are presented; these comprise Theoretical, Practice, and Research. The Theoretical lens provides introductory understandings of both solitude and mindfulness. On this basis, integral parallels between the two constructs are outlined. Next, Practice reviews solitude that is fostered through mindfulness practices. Further, additional models for recognizing solitude as a part of mindfulness are proposed. Finally, Research …

Making The Invisible Visible: Enhancing Information Literacy And Metacognition With A Constructivist Activity, Jessica Denke, Jennifer Jarson, Stefanie Sinno

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A growing body of literature focused on the pedagogical relationship between information literacy (IL) and metacognition suggests that facilitating learners’ reflections promotes IL learning. However, activating and assessing this relationship is difficult. This article describes a constructivist activity that models for students how to practice IL while increasing awareness of metacognitive approaches. The modified jigsaw activity, including a worksheet, facilitates individual reflection and peer-to-peer learning through structured conversation regarding popular press articles. Using a grounded theory approach, coding of students’ worksheets showed IL development related to comprehension, procedure, evaluation, and reflection. Moreover, the worksheet offers instructors insight into student learning …

A Team Approach To Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teaching And Learning, Cynthia S. Deale Jan 2020

A Team Approach To Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teaching And Learning, Cynthia S. Deale

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated how one type of student evaluation of teaching (SET) tool and a team approach to evaluating a course helped to provide feedback in an online, synchronous and asynchronous course and an in-person, face-to-face course through a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study. Student observational narratives and responses to a feedback tool were gathered for two undergraduate courses, one that was offered face-to-face (n=167) and one that was taught online (n=155), over several semesters. The most important factors, with regard to the teaching of the courses, were ensuring that the courses were well organized in terms of …

The Genesis, Evolution, And Influence Of Undergraduate Research Mentoring Relationships, Shannon N. Davis, Rebecca M. Jones

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Undergraduate research has been documented as yielding valuable student learning outcomes. While the outcomes have been extensively investigated, the development and characteristics of the relationship with the research mentor has received less attention. To better understand how participating in undergraduate research yields substantial benefits to students, we need to elucidate the relationship between students and their research mentors. Using survey and focus group data from a select group of undergraduate researchers at one research university, we investigated the origins of undergraduate research mentoring relationships, the development of those relationships over time, and how the characteristics of the mentoring relationship yielded …

Critical Thinking And Critical Literacy: Mutually Exclusive?, Kristi Giselsson Jan 2020

Critical Thinking And Critical Literacy: Mutually Exclusive?, Kristi Giselsson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Critical thinking is a core skill within tertiary education, traditionally relying on such principles as logic and truth. Relativistic pedagogical frameworks, such as critical literacy, however, have become increasingly widespread within all levels of education and call into question such principles. In order to ascertain whether critical thinking skills are enhanced or hindered by relativistic approaches, the assessment results of students studying critical literacy within an enabling program at a regional university in Australia were analysed in a small-scale study. The findings potentially suggest that the framework of critical literacy may have had a negative impact on students’ results and, …

Letter From The Editors, Joe Pellegrino, Delores Liston, Delena Bell Gatch

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Welcome to vol.14, no. 1 of the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Beyond the usual introduction to the issue, we'd like to address the extraordinary circumstances under which we all find ourselves working. After a year where the Journal shifted publication schedules, and thus included three issues in vol. 13, this issue is the first of a volume that drops back to our usual biannual publication. It is also the first issue since over six million of us have been infected by the Coronavirus. We thought seriously about delaying this issue, but ultimately decided against that. …

Global Perspectives In The Core: Student Attitudes And Instructor Performance, Scott M. Butler, Amanda Reinke Jan 2020

Global Perspectives In The Core: Student Attitudes And Instructor Performance, Scott M. Butler, Amanda Reinke

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Global learning and global citizenship education (GCE) continue to be integrated as co-curricular and curricular components in US higher education. Many institutions have linked their mission and values statements to global learning. However, their efforts fail to reflect a single shared understanding or philosophy of global learning or GCE. While scholars continue to discuss and debate the substance of these frameworks, few studies have analyzed perspectives of curricular global learning and GCE requirements. Three hundred fifty-four undergraduate students attending a university in the Southern US completed questionnaires assessing their attitudes towards global learning, international issues, and global citizenship, as well …

The objective of this study was to measure public perception of the different planting techniques (block and matrix), which are used at visitor information centers (VICs) and other rights of way (ROW) areas. The main factors that affect public perception of planting techniques were identified through an extensive literature review and qualitative survey from four welcome centers in the state of Georgia. The ranking of those indicators, based on public preferences, was discovered through a quantitative survey. During the first phase of the quantitative survey, images of block and matrix were used. An iOS-based user-friendly and cost-effective augmented reality (AR) …

Nonparametric Misclassification Simulation And Extrapolation Method And Its Application, Congjian Liu Jan 2020

Nonparametric Misclassification Simulation And Extrapolation Method And Its Application, Congjian Liu

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The misclassification simulation extrapolation (MC-SIMEX) method proposed by Küchenho et al. is a general method of handling categorical data with measurement error. It consists of two steps, the simulation and extrapolation steps. In the simulation step, it simulates observations with varying degrees of measurement error. Then parameter estimators for varying degrees of measurement error are obtained based on these observations. In the extrapolation step, it uses a parametric extrapolation function to obtain the parameter estimators for data with no measurement error. However, as shown in many studies, the parameter estimators are still biased as a result of the parametric extrapolation …

"That's A Man:" How Trans Men In The South Bolster Their Claims To Manhood, Megan Y. Phillips Jan 2020

"That's A Man:" How Trans Men In The South Bolster Their Claims To Manhood, Megan Y. Phillips

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

While several studies have explored manhood acts and compensatory manhood acts in cisgender men (Ezzell 2012; Sumerau 2012), few have examined them in the trans community. This research fills gaps in the literature by examining an understudied population in the South, an area of the country where queer lives are often ignored. Additionally, it allows us to continue to separate masculinities from only those born with male bodies. Using 51 interviews with trans men, I examine the experiences of trans men in the South and the manhood acts they employ to enhance their masculinity and compensate for their presumed lack …

Generalization Of Kullback-Leibler Divergence For Multi-Stage Diseases: Application To Diagnostic Test Accuracy And Optimal Cut-Points Selection Criterion, Chen Mo Jan 2020

Generalization Of Kullback-Leibler Divergence For Multi-Stage Diseases: Application To Diagnostic Test Accuracy And Optimal Cut-Points Selection Criterion, Chen Mo

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Kullback-Leibler divergence (KL), which captures the disparity between two distributions, has been considered as a measure for determining the diagnostic performance of an ordinal diagnostic test. This study applies KL and further generalizes it to comprehensively measure the diagnostic accuracy test for multi-stage (K > 2) diseases, named generalized total Kullback-Leibler divergence (GTKL). Also, GTKL is proposed as an optimal cut-points selection criterion for discriminating subjects among different disease stages. Moreover, the study investigates a variety of applications of GTKL on measuring the rule-in/out potentials in the single-stage and multi-stage levels. Intensive simulation studies are conducted to compare the performance …

Performing Identities Of The Auditory-Verbal Deaf Students In The Classrooms: A Teacher's Performative Memoir, Tracy Edenfield

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

My dissertation, that incorporated performative storytelling and dance, is a memoir reflecting over fifty years of my lived experiences related to deafness as a multidimensional illustration that spans from my experience as a young child with a family member affected by Usher’s Syndrome; as an educational sign language interpreter; as a teacher of the deaf (TOD); and as an early intervention auditory-verbal therapist. Theoretically, my dissertation builds upon critical pedagogy (e.g., Baglieri & Shapiro, 2012; Freire, 1970/2009; McLaren & Crawford, 1998) and disability studies (e.g., Davis, 2002; Goodley, 2011; Siebers, 2008; Kitchens, 1998). The physical disability of deafness continues to …
