Nine Stories And The Society Of The Spectacle: An Exploration Into The Alienation Of The Individual In The Post-War Era, Margaret E. Geddy
Nine Stories And The Society Of The Spectacle: An Exploration Into The Alienation Of The Individual In The Post-War Era, Margaret E. Geddy
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the thematic links between three of J. D. Salinger’s short stories published in Nine Stories (“A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” “Down at the Dinghy,” and “Teddy”), ultimately arguing that it is a short-story cycle rooted in the quandary posed by the suicide of Seymour Glass. This conclusion is reached by assessing the influence of T. S. Eliot’s poem “The Waste Land” on these stories, something that is understood through the Marxist frame of Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle.
Eye Screening In U.S. Adults With Diabetes: Examination Of Trends, Racial And Ethnic Differences, And Contribution Of Medicaid Expansion, Meps 2010-2017, Karon Lewis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent cause of vision impairment and blindness among adults in the United States. Early diagnosis of DR through dilated eye examinations can reduce the risk of vision impairment or loss. Differences in eye examination rates by race and ethnicity have been suggested by prior studies emphasizing importance of increasing insurance coverage and access to care among minority populations. The Affordable Care Act aimed to expand health insurance coverage and improve access to care. This study examined trends overall and by race and ethnicity in eye examination rates and the contribution of Medicaid expansion on changes …

Exploring Student And Faculty Reactions To Smartphone Policies In The Classroom, Alicia A. Stachowski University Of Wisconsin - Stout, Kathryn L. Hamilton, Andrea M. Bertram
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The current studies examined attitudes about classroom cell phone usage and reactions to cell phone policies among students and faculty. Study 1 documented students’ and faculty’s perceptions of appropriateness of cell phones in the classroom and about what classroom policies should be. Students reported greater leniency regarding cell phone use in the classroom and suggested stricter penalties for inappropriate use. Study 2 surveyed faculty and students about four cell phone policies ranging in level of leniency. The results indicated as policy leniency increased, cell phone use increased and enforcement decreased. Study 3 evaluated students’ reactions to actual classroom cell phone …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Principals' Influence On Teacher Attrition, Kellie E. Gebhardt
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Principals' Influence On Teacher Attrition, Kellie E. Gebhardt
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Classroom teachers' decisions to leave the profession negatively affect the educational experience of the students, burden the remaining teachers, and drain school districts of funds that should go to students but instead are spent on recruiting and training. This phenomenological study examined the experiences of former classroom teachers to determine the role their school principals may have played in their decisions to leave the profession. Ten former elementary school teachers from South Carolina participated in the study. The researcher collected data using interviews; a semi-structured interview protocol was created from current literature and designed to align with the research …
Between And Behind The Lines: The Life Of High School Coaches, Mary Davis
Between And Behind The Lines: The Life Of High School Coaches, Mary Davis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this study, I write about the emotional journey of high school athletic coaches’ experiences as they move through their day as teachers, coaches, and spouses/parents. The examination of the emotions and transitions high school coaches experience has been largely unresearched. There have been examinations of teachers, the impact coaches have on athletes, and a coach as a parent, but there is not extensive research on all three roles experienced by one person. High school athletics is a tremendous part of high school, and coaches have a tremendous impact not only on their players, but on the students they teach …

Leadership, Technology & Human Development: Faculty Publications
Aim/Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between doctoral students’ candidacy examination scores and estimated time to degree completion, measured by dissertation progression.
Background
Time to degree completion in doctoral programs continues to be an issue and reasons for high attrition rates for doctoral students are broad and include varied core components of the academic pathway such as challenges with critical thinking during coursework, stress about passing comprehensive examinations, poor academic writing, and lack of knowledge around scholarly practitioner research.
Methodology
An ex post facto, correlational research design utilized quantitative data to determine …

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
A five-year project, Access to Care was developed and implemented by the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia (SCFG) leveraging community resources and partnerships to increase access and improve the quality of healthcare and healthcare coordination in an adult sickle cell disease (SCD) population in underserved and rural areas of Georgia. The project is comprised of three phases: (Phase 1) the Community Health Worker Program - to improve the health outcomes of individuals living with SCD through healthcare coordination; (Phase 2) the CME-accredited Provider Training Program - to increase the knowledge of non-specialty providers in Georgia to increase provider capacity and …

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, has been rapidly increasing in the United States. Boroughs of New York City, including Queens county, turn out to be the epicenters of this infection. According to the data provided by the New York State Department of Health, most of the cases of new COVID-19 infections in New York City have been found in the Queens county where 42,023 people have tested positive, and 3221 people have died as of 20 April 2020. Person-to-person transmission and travels were implicated in the initial spread of the outbreaks, but factors …
