In this workshop, we will introduce an active learning activity designed to teach source evaluation in a 50-minute class. The activity, which incorporates elements of problem-based learning and uses a flipped classroom approach, was added to our institution’s first-year experience course. Prompting students to consider a local issue, the activity requires students to evaluate sources represented as “source cards,” choose sources they would use in the context of the assignment, and justify their decisions. Motivated by the challenge and relevance of the activity, students …

How do you get students excited about research data management and attract over 70 participants to a voluntary workshop? How do you get Librarians excited about teaching a research data management workshop to undergraduates? With the promise of Gummi Bears and hands-on fun! During this workshop session, presenters will break down their experience overhauling a faculty workshop into an active learning session to expose students of all experience levels to basic research data management concepts and techniques. Courageous Conversations In Counseling About Race, M. Ann Shillingford-Butler Ph.D., Kimberly Harris
National Cross-Cultural Counseling & Education Conference for Research, Action & Change (2016-2024)
The United States (U.S.) is known as the “melting pot” and is characterized by diversity (Matthews, Barden, & Sherrell, 2018). While the U.S. is culturally diverse, it is not culturally equal. Racial tensions have escalated recently, and psychologically harmful microaggressions are experienced by minorities across a multitude of settings, daily (Davis, DeBlaere, Brubaker, Owen, Jordan, Hook & Van Tongeren, 2015). Mentorship has been found to reduce these psychological barriers and promote resiliency and identity development. This presentation examines barriers of LGB POC, evidence-based mentorship implementation, and ways academic institutions may respond to this ever-important population.

Black families and individuals are no strangers to “masking” their true identities. This presentation focuses on the parallel existence of those who are marginalized and the harsh realities of societies cultural insensitivities.
