Driving Reform Through Communities Of Practice In Scientific Fields, Amanda L. Glaze
Driving Reform Through Communities Of Practice In Scientific Fields, Amanda L. Glaze
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
Humans learn through social interactions therefore it is not surprising that we create around ourselves social structures that guide and support our learning as well as our practice. Communities of practice are one such social structure that exists within fields of science. Understanding the secondary cultures that are represented in the epistemology, practices, and perceptions of each field can help us better approach reform in fields using communities of practice as a starting point. The intersections of communities, culture, and change represent challenges to reform in education that should be explored and leveraged.

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Background: Addressing knowledge deficiencies about cancer clinical trials and biospecimen donation can potentially improve participation among racial and ethnic minorities. This paper describes the formative research process used to design a culturally-appropriate cancer clinical trials education program for African American and Latino communities. We characterized community member feedback and its integration into the program.
Methods: We incorporated three engagement approaches into the formative research process to iteratively develop the program: including community-based organization (CBO) leaders as research team members, conducting focus groups and cognitive interviews with community members as reviewers/consultants, and interacting with two community advisory groups. An …

Establishing Best Practices In Institutional Repository Organization, Scott Bacon
Establishing Best Practices In Institutional Repository Organization, Scott Bacon
Digital Commons Southeastern User Group Meeting (2020) (Archived)
On the one-year anniversary of the CCU Digital Commons repository the organization of the Collections / Communities.html page was reviewed to gauge the need for revisions. Over 100 Digital Commons sites were examined to see how other repository managers organized their Collections pages. Top-level communities were coded into Community Types and were analyzed to surface trends in current practice. This presentation reviews trends in practice that emerged during research, as well as some of the best practices that were identified, including planning, iteration, labeling, limiting jargon, and finding a balance with top-level and nested content. Suggestions for improvement are given …

Engagement Of Community Stakeholders To Develop A Framework To Guide Research Dissemination To Communities, Jennifer Cunningham-Erves, Tilicia Mayo-Gamble, Yolanda Vaughn, Jim Hawk, Mike Helms, Claudia Barajas, Yvonne Joosten
Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Background: Dissemination of research findings to past study participants and the community-at-large is important. Yet, a standardized process for research dissemination is needed to report results to the community. Objective: We developed a framework and strategies to guide community-academic partnerships in community-targeted, dissemination efforts.
Methods: From 2017 to 2019, a community-academic partnership was formed in Nashville, Tennessee, and iteratively developed a framework and strategies for research dissemination using cognitive interviews. A deductive, constant comparative analysis was conducted on interview responses to examine framework and strategy content. Feedback was used to finalize the framework and strategies for the evaluation. …

We investigated the adoption of World Health Organization (WHO) naming of COVID-19 into the respective languages among the Group of Twenty (G20) countries, and the variation of COVID-19 naming in the Chinese language across different health authorities. On May 7, 2020, we identified the websites of the national health authorities of the G20 countries to identify naming of COVID-19 in their respective languages, and the websites of the health authorities in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore and identify their Chinese name for COVID-19. Among the G20 nations, Argentina, China, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Turkey do …

Designing Peptides To Bind Kappa B Dna And Mimic Nf-Kappa B Protein Complexes, Nicholas A. Markowich
Designing Peptides To Bind Kappa B Dna And Mimic Nf-Kappa B Protein Complexes, Nicholas A. Markowich
Honors College Theses
Transcription factors are important proteins that regulate gene expression and protein synthesis. Transcription factors can either boost the gene’s transcription rate by helping RNA polymerase activate transcription or restrict it by interfering with RNA polymerase, thereby repressing transcription. Nuclear factor-kappa-B (NF-κB) transcription factors are a family of proteins that control the synthesis of proteins involved in many cellular processes such as inflammatory and immune responses, cell growth, and apoptosis. However, the overexpression and activation of these transcription factors is linked to deadly conditions such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases which currently have few safe cures. The goal of this research …
Attachment Style: Connecting The Personality Traits Of Our Parents To How We See God, Kaitlyn C. Holcombe
Attachment Style: Connecting The Personality Traits Of Our Parents To How We See God, Kaitlyn C. Holcombe
Honors College Theses
This study was conducted to explore the connections between parental personality traits, adult attachment styles, and attachments to God. The personality traits of parents influence the level of care they are able to provide for their children; this impacts the child’s attachment style. Later in life, attachment styles influence friendships, romantic relationships, and even relationships with the divine through the correspondence pathway. How we view God is thus indirectly impacted by the personality traits of our parents. One-hundred forty-two undergraduate students participated in the study, answering various measures for perceived parent personality, attachment, and religiosity. All measurements were replicated from …
Lowering Antibiotic Resistance Utilizing Breastmilk, Moriah J. Harris
Lowering Antibiotic Resistance Utilizing Breastmilk, Moriah J. Harris
Honors College Theses
Antibiotic resistance is considered an emerging crisis in the healthcare world. This crisis has the potential to cause many bacterial diseases that cannot be cured using antibiotic drugs, which can lead to serious infections and death. There have been numerous studies that have found that sugars, proteins and protein-lipid complexes in breastmilk have antimicrobial properties. It has been proposed that these properties in breastmilk can help solve the antibacterial resistance crisis. This research project involved studying antibiotic resistance and how breastmilk can help solve this increasingly prevalent problem.
The implementation step of this research project involved a PowerPoint presentation detailing …

The Effect Of Empathy On Compassion Fatigue And Quality Of Life On Bachelor Of Science Nursing Students, Parker E. Intonato
The Effect Of Empathy On Compassion Fatigue And Quality Of Life On Bachelor Of Science Nursing Students, Parker E. Intonato
Honors College Theses
Empathy is a skill that nurses and nursing students must use with their patients to provide high quality care and build rapport with patients. Although, the prolonged use of empathy has been shown to increase compassion fatigue in nurses and decrease quality of life. Empathy has been described as the ability to feel and understand what another is experiencing. Compassion fatigue can be described as the natural response of emotions and behaviors that occur after experiencing and suffering the traumatic experiences of others. The effects of compassion fatigue call into question quality of life (QOL) issues. Quality of life includes …
