Covid-19 Pandemic In Brazil: Clinical Manifestation And Effect Of Comorbidities On Outcomes Of Hospitalized Sari Cases, Mario Keko, Karl E. Peace
Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Hospitalized SARI cases of 2020 reported to the Ministry of Health of Brazil through the SIVEP Gripe system are subject to our analysis. They are classified as COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 and clinical manifestations and comorbidities are reported for each group. The time trend in the number of cases reported in 2020 is compared to the previous year and the performance of the PCR test is explored in each group. The proportion of death is reported among different subgroups of the patients by epidemiological week. Logistic and Poisson regression models are used to check the effect of comorbidities on clinical outcomes.

Covid-19 Pandemic: News & Publications (Archived)
The report below shows an anticipated rise in confirmed and self-reported cases after completion of the second full week of classes on our campuses. As an institution of nearly 27,000 students and 3,350 employees, positive reports represent a very small proportion of our overall university population. These cases are primarily concentrated within the student population on the Statesboro campus. While we have been pleased with how the university community is complying with public health guidelines on our campuses, we must remain vigilant in our efforts if we want to continue the semester as we have started.

Dying For Change: The Impact Of Awareness Prevention And Intervention On Graduate Assistant Stress, Marla Bruner
Dying For Change: The Impact Of Awareness Prevention And Intervention On Graduate Assistant Stress, Marla Bruner
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
As challenges surrounding mental health and well-being in doctoral graduate students (GAs), continue to rise, it is imperative that higher education institutions evaluate the stressors that GAs experience, their awareness and use of campus resources for dealing with stressors, and the impact that additional resources and programming may have on stress. The research questions for this study sought to examine the stressors experienced by doctoral level graduate students working in GA positions and their corresponding awareness and use of campus resources, and to determine what impact, if any, providing additional services, resources, and programming in had after a three-year implementation …

Brannen, David Beauchamp, Nadia M. Cartwright, Danyelle M. Liddle, Justine M. Tishinsky, Genevieve Newton, Jennifer M. Monk
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Group work (GW) in undergraduate education facilitates the development of communication and collaborative skills. However, dysfunctional and inequitable group dynamics can have adverse effects, leading to increased anxiety. This research sought to determine the effectiveness of a Group Work Contract to facilitate the GW process in the face-to-face (n=168) and online (n=105) formats of a third year nutritional science course. Changes in students’ attitudes and approaches to GW were assessed before (semester week 4) and after (semester week 12) completion of the contract and assignment via online surveys. The results in both course formats were similar, wherein the Group Work …

Becoming Inclusive Teacher Educators: Self-Study As A Professional Learning Tool, Saiqa Azam Dr., Karen C. Goodnough, Alireza Moghaddam Dr., Christine Arnold Dr., Sharon Penney, Gabrielle D. Young, Kimberly Maich
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This article describes a self-study inquiry project designed and conducted by a self-study group at a Faculty of Education in an Atlantic Canadian University. The seven-member group engaged in a collaborative self-study inquiry while adopting Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in their teacher education practices and documented their professional learning. This yearlong self-study inquiry project encompassed several data collection methods to examine inclusive practices of self-study group members, including personal reflections, minutes of weekly meetings, artifacts, and field notes. This article focuses on how UDL provided a means for three group members to critically examine their inclusive practices at …
An Exploration Of Concussion Assessment And Management Knowledge In Athletic Therapy Students, Colin D. King, Loriann M. Hynes
An Exploration Of Concussion Assessment And Management Knowledge In Athletic Therapy Students, Colin D. King, Loriann M. Hynes
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Recent research has found substantial gaps in knowledge surrounding concussion assessment and management in various groups of Canadian healthcare professionals, including medical students, physiotherapists, chiropractic students, and family medicine physicians. The purpose of this project was to explore concussion knowledge in a sample of athletic therapy students and to use these findings to make practical pedagogical recommendations to improve concussion education. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach (initial questionnaire, student interviews, clinical educator interviews) was used to investigate the research question. The findings showed a large gap between theoretical knowledge and practical abilities to assess and manage concussions. Additionally, students felt …
Educators’ Use And Views Of Simulations As Teaching Tools Within A Discipline: The Example Of Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Stephanie Bae, Seung-Hyun Lee
Educators’ Use And Views Of Simulations As Teaching Tools Within A Discipline: The Example Of Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Stephanie Bae, Seung-Hyun Lee
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This Scholarship of Teaching and Learning study investigated hospitality faculty members’ perceptions and use of industry-related simulations in hospitality and tourism education to help the authors understand how simulations are and can be used as educational tools. Using learning engagement theory as a framework, respondents to a survey perceived that simulations help students develop decision-making skills, increase problem-solving skills, integrate knowledge from other classes, learn to work with others, and link theory to practice, and noted that simulations are fun to use. A significant positive relationship was found between the number of semesters educators have used simulations and their satisfaction …

Thinking Ethically About Hiv Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis: Retention In Care And Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing In A Southeastern United States Local Health Department In The Time Of Covid-19, Ellie Purdy
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Local Health Departments (LHDs) are critical providers of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention efforts. HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is an evolving public health initiative and practitioners should consider PrEP interventions in context of ethical decision-making and a broad STI prevention strategy as global incidence of bacterial STIs remains high and those at-risk for HIV are generally at-risk for other STIs. An evaluation of the Thinking Ethically framework and LHD PrEP services was performed to fill a gap in the literature and support program decision-making. A retrospective review of PrEP user medical records from a LHD …

Supervisor Knowledge, Attitudes, And Interventions Methods Of Burnout Among Healthcare Providers, Wendy Deal
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Context: Burnout is prevalent among healthcare providers. Research has identified evidence-based intervention and preventative methods for use against burnout. There is limited research surrounding perceptions of burnout among those that supervise healthcare providers. Purpose: To explore supervisors’ knowledge, attitudes, and interventions related to burnout of healthcare providers within a hospital or clinic setting. Design: Consensual qualitative research with emergent design Methods: Eight supervisors were interviewed using a semi-structured interview approach via virtual platform. Participants were asked questions that aimed to capture supervisor perceptions of burnout. Interview transcripts were coded based on categories and themes developed through a consensus process …
