Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications
COVID-19 has had unprecedented effects on populations around the world. Given the political context of the pandemic and the nation’s response to it, this study sought to assess the extent of Americans’ personal fear about the virus as well as their fear for others (altruistic fear), identify potential predictors of these fears, and examine the mental health impact of heightened COVID-19 fears. Overall, a majority of respondents worried about various aspects of the virus, from being exposed to dying, and reported often worrying about others, including family, the elderly, and healthcare professionals. Building on the fear of crime literature, we …

The Perception Of Motherhood Through The Smiles And The Spit-Up, Sydney M. Forsythe
The Perception Of Motherhood Through The Smiles And The Spit-Up, Sydney M. Forsythe
Honors College Theses
This research examines how motherhood is viewed by women, particularly mothers, in the southeast of the United States today. The treatment of women compared to men in women's studies has been a popular topic, but there is less research on mothers. This qualitative study is designed to hear personal stories from mothers and potential mothers, both employed and unemployed, describing how they feel mothers are perceived in the southeast of the United States. Facing the overwhelming literature that describes motherhood as associated with numerous negative impacts on women’s lives, this study explores the weight of joy or the paucity of …

A Novel Application Of Galleria Mellonella Larvae To Study Pathogenesis Of Rickettsia Rickettsii Infection, Jacob M. Jones
Honors College Theses
Rickettsia are obligate intracellular tick-borne bacteria that cause acute undifferentiated febrile illness accompanied by headache, malaise, myalgias, and disseminated endothelial infection. Immune responses to Rickettsia and pathogenesis of rickettsioses are not fully understood. Current work with Rickettsia is limited to vertebrate models that are strictly regulated and have low throughput. Since the innate immune system of vertebrates retains striking similarities with the immune response in insects, invertebrates are being used to study host responses to various pathogens. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if larvae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella (GML) can be used as an …

A Deep Analysis And Algorithmic Approach To Solving Complex Fitness Issues In Collegiate Student Athletes, Holly N. Puckett
Honors College Theses
Sports are not simply an entertainment source. For many, it creates a sense of community, support, and trust among both fans and athletes alike. In order to continue the sense of community sports provides, athletes must be properly cared for in order to perform at the highest level possible. Thus, their fitness and health must be monitored continuously. In a professional sense, one can expect individualized attention to athletes daily due to an abundance of funding and resources. However, when looking at college communities and student athletes within them, the number of athletes per athletic trainer increases due to both …

Nze Residential Test Facility Analysis Throughout Summer/Winter Peak Months For Thermal Comfort Prediction, Yearim Yang
Nze Residential Test Facility Analysis Throughout Summer/Winter Peak Months For Thermal Comfort Prediction, Yearim Yang
Honors College Theses
The present study evaluates the thermal comfort in the east bedroom of the Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility (NZERTF) in a mixed-humid climate. This unit was constructed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for scholars to analyze its energy performance and indoor environmental quality. The thermal comfort is investigated in a designated bedroom space by analyzing 27 dry-bulb temperature, 4 airspeed, 6 globe temperature, and 6 relative humidity sensors in a 3x3x3 array and a center sensor stand during two opposite seasonal months (July and December). The conventionally ducted heat pump, small duct high velocity, and heat recovery …

Knowing Thyself: Getting Students To Dig Deep In Personal Narrative Essays, Eric Grunwald
Knowing Thyself: Getting Students To Dig Deep In Personal Narrative Essays, Eric Grunwald
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
The personal narrative essay is an excellent assignment for an expository writing course, but students do not always explore themselves deeply. A modifed version of Elbow’s layered freewriting that pushes students toward uncomfortable emotions in selecting topics facilitates that. In this session, after receiving a quick review of the pedagogical underpinnings of the practice, summaries of student feedback, and brief samples of student work, participants will engage in the same process of topic selection that students did to experience it for themselves. The importance of mid-process peer and instructor feedback will also be discussed, and handouts on all these aspects …

Grant Application For The Hearts And Hands Clinic, Christine Cooper, Ariellah Ward
Eagle Showcase: Excellence in Service-Learning (Archived)
During our service-learning course on public health funding and grant writing, we had the opportunity to work at the Hearts and Hands Clinic. During the pandemic, many families lost their income and healthcare insurance. Thus, facing uncertainties about where to obtain medical care. The clinic wanted to expand its existing chronic care program to an underserved community in Evans County. Our task was to prepare a grant application for the clinic to secure the funding needed to help vulnerable adults better manage their chronic disease and prevent further complications. Engaging in this applied experience allowed us to improve our implementation …
