Using Best Practices Of Teaching And Learning To Make Your Meetings More Inclusive And Productive, Jessica Kohout-Tailor
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
As instructors of information literacy, our goal is to equip learners with the skills needed to critically evaluate, use, and create information effectively and ethically. Listening and speaking skills are vital, as the information proficient learner listens to information, asks questions, and synthesizes the information with which they interact.
As instructors, we model these skills and behaviors within and outside of classrooms and libraries. We teach learners how to read information, model metacognitive skills, and support learners with how to effectively articulate their findings and new knowledge. We recognize that our pedagogy extends beyond the traditional classroom, which can include …

Small Teaching: Effective Techniques To Scaffold Student Learning In Information Literacy Instruction Sessions., Omer Farooq
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Learning scientists have long advocated for using learning techniques that help students achieve their learning outcomes in a variety of different contexts. These strategies include engaging prior knowledge, elaborative interrogation questions, self-explanation, distributed practice, and testing—all of which bring the processes of comprehension, critical thinking, and synthesis to the explicit attention of the learner. However, the use of strategies such as self-explanations, analogies, and elaborative interrogation prompts that enhance learning by facilitating the various stages of the research process is not fully explored in the context of information literacy instruction. This presentation will highlight ways to incorporate specific questioning prompts …

Using Curriculum Mapping To Develop An Acrl Framework-Centered Information Literacy Instruction Program At Georgetown’S School Of Continuing Studies Library, Ladislava Khailova
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
This presentation focuses on an ACRL Framework (2016) informed curriculum mapping project conducted at Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies Library. The School, aimed at preparing largely non-traditional students with the skills needed to succeed in today’s business landscape, offers graduate degrees in a wide range of professional disciplines, with the Library supporting these educational efforts through a very active information literacy program. After an initial analysis, the presenter/Library Director determined that the existing program contained substantial gaps as well as redundancies, with some disciplines’ required blocks of courses not visited by instructional librarians at all and others oversaturated. To …

Reaching out to STEM Students beyond the one-shot requested instruction sessions is challenging. Creating faculty buy-in for non-traditional STEM instruction is doubly challenging. This poster will highlight a recent activity designed to draw STEM participation in utilizing a unique set of resources from the institution’s Archival Collections. Normally viewed as primarily relevant to history and humanities students, this collection provides the backbone for a fully immersive Escape Room Activity and exposure to primary sources normally not considered part of the normal STEM course work. The hands-on activity provides an opportunity for critical thinking, reflection, and teamwork. The poster will highlight …

Bring Yourself And Relevant Resources To Them: Becoming Embedded Online To Support Students In Your Liaison Area, Josette M. Kubicki
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
“Build it and they will come” is a common approach for academic libraries for providing research support to their community. Like many academic libraries, Reese Library at Augusta University creates online tools to guide students in information literacy development and research, such as library guides and video tutorials; and offers support services, “Ask a Librarian” service and “Contact Your Liaison Librarian”. Providing access through the library website, promoting them via marketing, library instruction, and orientation sessions, we hope that the students we inform peruse such tools and seek assistance when needed. Although some do, but many do not.

We’Re Both Your Librarian: A Course Collaboration Between An Academic Library And A Health Sciences Library, Stephanie Evers Ard
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The University of South Alabama is in the process of merging its academic library and health sciences library, which have previously functioned as essentially separate entities. This ongoing process requires many changes, from budget and staff considerations, to revisiting the roles the librarians play in their respective academic communities. This last concern led to a collaboration between two librarians--the Assistant Director for Strategic Initiatives at the health sciences library and the Social Sciences and Student Engagement Librarian at the academic library--in response to a faculty request for an embedded librarian to support a fully-online graduate nursing class in scholarly writing. …

The Common Zine: Responding To The Common Reader As A Community And Building Information Literacy Skills, Lauren S. Kehoe
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
To support NYU Read’s first ever common reading, librarians developed a program that invited the community to respond to Tara Westover’s Educated. In addition to hosting a film series, author talk, and engagement board in the atrium of the library, a collaborative zine program was developed where all members of the community were encouraged to submit their poetry, short stories, photos, riddles, collages, playlists, comics, or any variety of expression to be included in the zine (which will be archived and distributed to the community). Zines have become an increasingly popular source used in and collected by libraries. Several …

An Engaging, Hands-On Activity For Evaluating Sources Through Problem-Based Learning, Brooke J. Taxakis, Elizabeth Dobbins
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
How can we facilitate first-year student engagement with critical Framework concepts, especially in a one-shot class? In this workshop, we will introduce an active learning activity designed to teach source evaluation in a 50-minute class. The activity, which incorporates elements of problem-based learning and uses a flipped classroom approach, was added to our institution’s first-year experience course. Prompting students to consider a local issue, the activity requires students to evaluate sources represented as “source cards,” choose sources they would use in the context of the assignment, and justify their decisions. Motivated by the challenge and relevance of the activity, students …

Developing And Transitioning Faculty To Online Teaching, Barbara Serianni
Developing And Transitioning Faculty To Online Teaching, Barbara Serianni
SoTL Commons Conference
In the midst of decreasing trend in postsecondary enrollment, enrollment in fully online programs continues to trend upward (U.S. Department of Education, 2018). Given the persistent growth of online learning in higher education as the result of adding fully online courses to traditional on-campus programs of study and the persistent development of new fully online programs, the question of instructional effectiveness must be asked. Are faculty in traditional 4-year public universities prepared to effectively deliver online instruction and support the needs of online students? If they are, how were they prepared? If they are not, how can they be prepared?

Critical Teaching Behaviors: What Does "Good" Teaching Look Like?, Lauren M. Barbeau, Claudia Cornejo Happel
SoTL Commons Conference
How can faculty and administrators identify and document evidence of “good” teaching? Defining “good” teaching as the implementation of evidence-based practices proven to foster success, we developed a Critical Teaching Behaviors framework consisting of six categories of observable behaviors: alignment, assessment, inclusive learning environment, student engagement, educational technology, and reflective practice. We will present an overview of the meta-analysis conducted to construct the framework, participants will then use the framework to reflect on their teaching practice before providing feedback on its design and usefulness in documenting effective teaching behaviors at their institutions.

Sensemaking And Big Data Science: Soft And Hard Marketing Skills Are Needed Today, Michael Latta
Sensemaking And Big Data Science: Soft And Hard Marketing Skills Are Needed Today, Michael Latta
AMTP Proceedings 2020
The story of how Big Data Science was enabled through the marriage of technology in the form of the young discipline of computer science and the mature discipline of statistics was told by Gil Press in his (2013) Forbes piece titled ‘A Very Short History Of Data Science.’ The name “Data Science” is now the discipline charged with utilizing Big Data. But making sense of data has a much longer history and has been debated by scientists, statisticians, librarians, computer scientists and others for years. More recently, the ideas surrounding the importance of ‘context’ have been integrated into the use …
Supporting Service Learning With An Interdisciplinary Csr Marketing Model, Ellen Raineri
Supporting Service Learning With An Interdisciplinary Csr Marketing Model, Ellen Raineri
AMTP Proceedings 2020
Since CSR is an interdisciplinary topic, a CSR service learning project, too, should be interdisciplinary. Accordingly, Marketing was selected to be combined with the CSR service learning project. Since careful planning and design are paramount for service learning projects, a model is shared that was implemented in three undergraduate hybrid CSR classes. Three deliverables are discussed: The first is a CSR Marketing Analysis Report to guide students in their evaluation of an organization’s marketing initiatives permitting students to then analyze what new/enhanced marketing initiatives were needed. The second is a CSR Marketing Action Plan to identify marketing initiatives to complete. …
Competing With The Sharing Economy: Understanding The Barriers Faced By “Traditional” Providers, Amiee Mellon, Jim Connell
Competing With The Sharing Economy: Understanding The Barriers Faced By “Traditional” Providers, Amiee Mellon, Jim Connell
AMTP Proceedings 2020
Consumer participation has made the sharing economy an economic wonder, creating valid competition for traditional service providers. Using the self-determination theory, we examine why both consumers and peer-providers engage in the sharing economy. Three areas of consumer-focused marketing where traditional providers can increase efforts to decrease erosion are app abilities; niche markets; and consumer-desired amenities. Two areas of employee-focused marketing where traditional providers can increase efforts to decrease erosion are flexible hours and environments and employee appreciation and rewards.
