Georgia Southern Libraries Annual Report 2021, Georgia Southern University Libraries
Georgia Southern Libraries Annual Report 2021, Georgia Southern University Libraries
Library Annual Reports
The University Libraries use a fiscal year scorecard to plan and coordinate strategic initiatives. The goals listed in the scorecard are aligned with the University’s Strategic Plan and specifically address how we support those goals. As a team, we develop a yearly scorecard to itemize and track select activities, by strategic planning goal, within our departments and as a Libraries. These combined activities represent our commitment to strategic planning initiatives for that fiscal year. The combined structure of University’s goals and Libraries’ objectives and activities serve as our strategic planning document.

Collaborative Learning Of International Undergraduate English Language Learners In Small-Group Writing Communities, Yiting Chu
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This article reports a study on how international English language learner (ELL) students participated in a collaborative learning community comprised of peers and peer tutors in a writing center in a U.S. university. Drawing on the theory of community of practice (CoP), qualitative data were collected from weekly observations of three groups and in-depth interviews with four ELL students and six tutors. Findings suggested that these three groups functioned differently as CoPs with varied levels of participation and social interaction among the students and between students and tutors. A mismatch between the goals and roles of the students and those …

The Connections Project (Pristawa,2014) is designed to assist school personnel in identifying students at-risk for social-emotional concerns by examining students’ perceptions of connectedness with adults and peers in school. Currently used in several states, schools complete the screening measure as part of their use of the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. While many measures of connectedness are lengthy and designed for elementary grade children, the Connections measure is an efficient, straightforward assessment employed with middle school and high school aged youth and school personnel. The purpose of the current study was to examine student connectedness with adults (including advisory …
Using The Authentic Intellectual (Aiw) Framework To Connect First Year Students With The Local Blues Society, Tom M. Buckmiller, Jennifer Thoma
Using The Authentic Intellectual (Aiw) Framework To Connect First Year Students With The Local Blues Society, Tom M. Buckmiller, Jennifer Thoma
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how I used the Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) pedagogical framework in conjunction with Project-Based Learning (PBL) to develop a campus-community partnership while enhancing and promoting the goals of the local blues society. In order to achieve the goals of the AIW framework, I created a major class project which charged the students with writing and editing a book telling stories of members of the local blues society to be available on Amazon.com. The results, or outcomes, of this project were categorized relative to two areas: academic (classroom) and civic (The Blues Society). …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
My ceramics are made to entice the viewer to live in their present moment by altering their perception and familiarity of utilitarian objects through means of natural processes found out in nature. I want the user to be fully engaged with thoughts about time, nature, and being present during their lives. Life in not just about daily responsibilities and sometimes we as humans can get so caught up in everything around us that we simply forget to enjoy everything we have worked hard to achieve. By experiencing something new, we can get out of our comfort zones and being present …

The Evolving Nature Of The Inside And Outside Sales Relationship: Cooperation And Conflict, Zori Perkins, Claire Durant, Stefan Sleep
The Evolving Nature Of The Inside And Outside Sales Relationship: Cooperation And Conflict, Zori Perkins, Claire Durant, Stefan Sleep
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Firms are increasingly turning to inside sales, salespeople working from a single or virtual location versus traveling to customers, because of the significant costs savings and improvements in communications technology. As a result, there is growing interaction between the inside and outside sales organizations. Through a series of interviews with inside and outside sale representatives, this research explores the evolving relationship between the two. The results of the interviews show that the sales responsibilities for inside and outside sales vary significantly across firms. Additionally, the research finds that personal relationships play a critical role in the success of the inside …
Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall
Revisiting The Beneficiaries Of The Scotus Ruling Striking Down Paspa, Sam Fullerton, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall
AMTP Proceedings 2021
A Supreme Court ruling in 2018 essentially rendered restrictions on sports gambling to run counter to states’ rights, thus in conflict with the Constitution of the United States. As a consequence, 13 states and the District of Columbia now have legalized sports gambling. Initial research into the consequences of this ruling identified 12 potential beneficiaries. Subsequent research entailing an assessment of new literature and a survey of executive opinion involving a number of marketing executives who work within the field of sports marketing expanded the findings from the earlier study. This extension of the preliminary study found 14 beneficiaries rather …
The Effect Of Profanity And Quality On Perceived Review Helpfulness And Purchase Intentions, Dustin R. Wilcox, Ismail Karabas
The Effect Of Profanity And Quality On Perceived Review Helpfulness And Purchase Intentions, Dustin R. Wilcox, Ismail Karabas
AMTP Proceedings 2021
This extended abstract explores the effect of profanity usage and writing quality on the perceived helpfulness of online customer reviews and customers’ purchase intentions. Customer reviews have become increasingly important in recent years. Topics related to customer reviews are valence, quality, and the presence or absence of profanity. While previous research has connected some of these topics, the moderating effect of profanity on review quality is scarce. We expect that readers will find low quality negative reviews containing profanity less helpful, high quality negative reviews containing profanity more helpful, and high quality reviews containing profanity more helpful. Furthermore, we expect …

Georgia Management Students’ Perceptions Of Faculty Academic Qualifications And Professional Experiences, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer, Gregory Quinet, Steven Tolman, Katherine Fallon
Georgia Educational Researcher
The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of undergraduate management students at one Georgia institution of higher education regarding the importance of academic qualifications and professional experiences possessed by their management faculty. The study addressed the importance of these attributes to include relevant practical experience, traditional academic training, scholarly productivity, higher education institutions attended, and level of engagement with the business community. This quantitative study surveyed 70 upper-level management students using Likert categories to provide an exploratory view of attributes that today’s students view as important in faculty. The findings ranked attributes of relevant professional experience more important …

The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Growth, Social Support, And Rurality, Chelsea Thweatt
The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Growth, Social Support, And Rurality, Chelsea Thweatt
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The majority of Americans will experience a trauma in their lifetime (Kilpatrick et al., 2013). While some will experience severe negative symptoms as a result of their trauma (U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, 2019), up to 70% of people will report positive outcomes (Calhoun & Tedeschi, 1999). Posttraumatic growth (PTG) refers to positive changes that individuals experience after a traumatic event (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004). A key way for PTG to occur is through social support (Shakespeare-Finch & Copping, 2006). Research found that the quality and the quantity of social support matter when predicting PTG (Shang et al., 2020). Specifically, …
Myelination: A Plastic Religion, Cody A. Thomas
Myelination: A Plastic Religion, Cody A. Thomas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Plastic products are convenient, abundant and our use of them has become routine. This acceptance of
plastics’ presence has become a dogma that most humans adhere to. The continual consumption of
these single-use plastics in our daily lives has unknowingly shaped our environmental consciousness,
behaviors, and justification for them. This belief in plastics function has been strategically developed by
companies that rely on our behaviors to distribute their products. Humans have become the faithful
consumers of these goods and this belief. The brain and its ability to remain plastic and develop
decision-making skills are known as Myelination. New experiences enhance …
Applicant Religion And Work Qualifications Impacting Hiring Decisions, William T. Cagle
Applicant Religion And Work Qualifications Impacting Hiring Decisions, William T. Cagle
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The underlying effect of religious bias towards Muslims has negatively impacted their chances of receiving equal employment opportunities. The current study attempts to observe this effect by having Christian participants pretend to be a boss of a company and asking them to evaluate a fictitious resume and rate the applicant on their suitability for the managerial job at hand. The applicants were either Christian or Muslim. Based on the justification-suppression model, we also attempted to observe the effect having different hiring qualifications had on the applicant ratings. To do this, applicants either had a high or low GPA, and they …
Using Genetic Approaches To Understand Tumorigenesis In Drosophila, Shawna Defreitas
Using Genetic Approaches To Understand Tumorigenesis In Drosophila, Shawna Defreitas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The large number of conserved molecular and signaling pathways between Drosophila melanogaster and humans, makes Drosophila an effective model organism to better understand human diseases, including cancers. Previous studies by clinicians and researchers have identified PTEN, BRCA2, P53, NF1, and RB1 as key mutational drivers in High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer (HGSOC), the most malignant form of ovarian cancer in humans. The objective of this study was to develop a tumor model in the follicle cell epithelium of the Drosophila ovary and to use immunohistochemistry to study the molecular mechanisms behind tumor development. First, the Drosophila …

Habitat Use Of Wintering Henslow's Sparrows (Centronyx Henslowii) In Power Line Right-Of-Ways, Abigail W. Dwire
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Habitat loss and degradation are the leading causes of grassland bird declines worldwide. The Henslow’s Sparrow (Centronyx henslowii; hereafter HESP) is a grassland bird species of conservation concern that has historically relied on the herbaceous ground-layer of longleaf pine savannas and similar habitats in the southeastern U.S. for food and shelter in the winter. However, due to human development, alterations of habitat, and fire suppression, only fragments of these habitats remain. Over the last decade, surveys have annually documented HESPs using power line right-of-ways (hereafter, ROWs) at several sites in the coastal plain of Georgia as alternative habitat for …
