New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson May 2007

New Technology In Education As Viewed Through The Utopic And Dystopic Worlds Of Science Fiction, Vivian Elaine Jackson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The use of educational technology has become a focus of reform efforts designed to enrich student learning. Proponents of technology view it as the panacea of education while others ask us to question this myth-information. Throughout America, school districts are designating millions of dollars for technology. Nevertheless, while there are schools with desirable infrastructures, too many schools are ill equipped for enhancing learning through technology. In addition, many classrooms house computers used to merely advance traditional teaching modes, e.g., drill and practice, rather than teach the importance of social responsibility for humankind and the environment through our use of technology. …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This theoretical inquiry sought to critically analyze the various ideological and political aspects of the culture of health care reform in the United States (US) and to investigate the underlying ideologies, values, and purposes of medical practice in a changing democratic society. Using Michel Foucault's cultural studies approach as the theoretical framework for the study, agent and client relationships within the US health care system were examined in efforts to describe the articulation between the health care crisis and the government's social responsibility to prevent the imminent bankruptcy of its health care system. State and national data were collected from …

Superintendents' Beliefs And Identification Of District Level Practices Contributing To The Academic Achievement Of Black Males In The State Of Georgia, Hayward Cordy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The graduation rate for Black males in the state of Georgia during the 2003-04 school year as reported by the Schott Foundation was 39 percent. This was in stark contrast to a 54 percent graduation rate for non-Hispanic White males. Nationwide, more than 50 percent of Black males drop out of school compared to between 25 and 30 percent of all other student populations. Additionally, Black males are twice as likely as Black females to be in special education. More Black males receive their GED in prison than graduate from college. The purpose of this study was to explore superintendents' …

Understanding The Multicultural Experience Of Lep Adolescents, Sharlene Snead Monahan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This inquiry is a qualitative study of the multicultural experience of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students who are learning a second language in an inner-city high school in southeastern Georgia. The LEP students are enrolled or have been enrolled in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Using three strands of inquiry, critical phenomenological, narrative, and anthropological, I addressed three major issues. Not only must the LEP students learn a new …

Chemical Signaling And Resource Use By African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Erek Stephen Napora May 2007

Chemical Signaling And Resource Use By African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Erek Stephen Napora

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In polygynous, sexually dimorphic species like the African elephant, Loxodonta africana, resource distribution influences female dispersion, while the location of females shapes male dispersion. Human constriction of viable habitat has affected elephant movements and impact. Elephants travel in matriarchal family groups, as single males or bachelor groups often looking for receptive females, and in mixed associations. Waterholes serve to meet the physical needs of elephants and as areas for information exchange, especially for males in search of females. When widely spaced, waterholes may be impacted heavily by elephants. I examined elephant use of a permanent waterhole to determine 1) the …

Anti-Insect Defensive Behaviors Of Equines After West Nile Virus Infection, Linsey Renee Cozzie

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

West Nile Virus is an important arbovirus (virus transmitted by arthropods) that has recently affected the health of both humans and animals in the United States. West Nile fever was first identified in the US in 1999. West Nile virus (WNV), vectored by mosquitoes, has had a detrimental impact on domestic horse health with over 23,000 equine cases in the United States since 1999. Previous research has focused on how this disease progresses and affects equids days to weeks post infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate permanent equine behavioral changes. Specifically, I examined if surviving this disease …

To explain the findings from the analysis, discussion topics were derived from the themes and trends and were presented to two, five person focus groups …
