Introduction: The Culture Of Jesuit Erudition In An Age Of Enlightenment, Jeffrey D. Burson
Introduction: The Culture Of Jesuit Erudition In An Age Of Enlightenment, Jeffrey D. Burson
History: Faculty Publications
Although works on religious, specifically Catholic, and more specifically Jansenist, contributions to the Enlightenment abound, the contributions of the Jesuits to the Enlightenment have remained relatively unexplored since Robert R. Palmer initially identified affinities between Jesuit thought and the emergence of the French Enlightenment as long ago as 1939. Accordingly, this introduction and the essays contained within the pages of this special issue revisit and further explore ways in which the individual Jesuits contributed to broader patterns of European intellectual and cultural history during the age of Enlightenment. Taken together, the contributions to this special issue investigate different aspects of …

This study reflects on the development and implementation of mid-term oral examinations in large-scale lecture courses at a large, public research university; specifically, this work examines the implications of oral exams for fostering student engagement and concept-based comprehension in addition to institutional and course commitments to diversity. This research traces the development of an effective method for administering oral midterms and assesses the advantages and challenges of utilizing oral examinations for student assessment by detailing student feedback and TAs’ reactions to administering this examination format. Findings reveal that oral examinations provided a chance for students to develop skills through a …

Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas
Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas
Honors College Theses
Competition from imported seafood, low product prices, increasing operation costs, and other socio-economic factors are negatively affecting coastal Georgia’s commercial fishing industry. Fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) is extensive and gives them unique perspectives into the problems the industry is facing. Their perspectives differ from those of biologists or policymakers, making them useful for implementing good management policies that not only consider the scientific knowledge of a fishery, but the human aspect as well. This thesis used conducted semi-structured and card-sorting interviews with commercial Georgia fishermen in two fishing communities to learn about the problems they face and their unique …
Who Is Baby Girl? A Philosophical Discussion Of The Legal Obligation To Define Authenticity, Madison Hayes
Who Is Baby Girl? A Philosophical Discussion Of The Legal Obligation To Define Authenticity, Madison Hayes
Honors College Theses
In the later twentieth century, American law attempted to address legacies of unjust treatment of Native Americans though legislation like the Indian Child Welfare Act, which requires considering Native American identity in child custody decisions. This created some complex legal questions about exactly what constituted Native identity. The Supreme Court case, Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl, exposed a number of problems that arose from determining authentic tribal identity. To offer a more precise analysis of the problem of identity in American law, I will engage in philosophical investigations into the nature of authenticity, bringing in the work of the …
