Cultivating Water Literacy In Stem Education: Undergraduates' Socio-Scientific Reasoning About Socio-Hydrologic Issues, David C. Owens, Destini N. Petitt, Diane Lally, Cory T. Forbes

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

Water-literate individuals effectively reason about the hydrologic concepts that underlie socio-hydrological issues (SHI), but functional water literacy also requires concomitant reasoning about the societal, non-hydrological aspects of SHI. Therefore, this study explored the potential for the socio-scientific reasoning construct (SSR), which includes consideration of the complexity of issues, the perspectives of stakeholders involved, the need for ongoing inquiry, skepticism about information sources, and the affordances of science toward the resolution of the issue, to aid undergraduates in acquiring such reasoning skills. In this fixed, embedded mixed methods study (N = 91), we found SHI to hold great potential as meaningful …

The Power Of Schemas: Math Teachers On Teaching, Julia Winter, Richard Schmertzing, Lorraine C. Schmertzing Oct 2020

The Power Of Schemas: Math Teachers On Teaching, Julia Winter, Richard Schmertzing, Lorraine C. Schmertzing

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

To understand cultural schemas shared by novice mathematics teachers, an ethnographic case study of five novice teachers who graduated from the same student-centered university program was conducted. Strauss and Quinn’s (1997/2001) interpretation of schema framed the identification of participants’ shared, tacit understandings about student-centered and teacher-centered methods and how each individual applied those schemas to their teaching practices.

Interviewing and data analysis strategies that modified and blended methods from Quinn’s (2005) discourse analysis, Seidman’s (2013) interview strategies, and D’Andrade’s (1995) work in cognitive anthropology were used. Participants shared stories about their upbringing, learning experiences, teacher training, and teaching practices. Coding …

The Ubiquity Of Patronage, Mykaela Brown Jul 2020

The Ubiquity Of Patronage, Mykaela Brown

Honors College Theses

Patron-client relations affect politics in various ways, especially the efficacy and implementation of policies. My research question is how does patronage politics affect policy change in democracies. I examine four democracies, two from the Global North (Canada and the United States) and two from the Global South (Botswana and South Africa). Using news articles and government websites surrounding a major issue in each of my four cases, I use qualitative methods (document analysis) to analyze patron-client relations in order to determine key actors in patron-client relations.

Seeking Justice: Reform To The Resolution Of Sexual Harassment Workplace Claims, Maygen Martinez May 2020

Seeking Justice: Reform To The Resolution Of Sexual Harassment Workplace Claims, Maygen Martinez

Honors College Theses

The era of the #MeToo Movement has brought about significant change in both personal and professional lives. With support from the community, many survivors of sexual assault are now able to publicly confront the atrocities that have happened to them. Further, and as a result of this impetus, historic legislation and internal action have caused many companies to end their mandatory arbitration practices for sexual harassment complaints. The ending of mandatory employer-sponsored arbitration opens the door to a significant change in the way discrimination and harassment complaints are resolved in the workplace. More employees than ever are now able to …
