Effect Of Fire Suppression On Aquatic Invertebrates In Ephemeral Wetlands Embedded In Longleaf Pine Forests, Hailey E. Baker
Effect Of Fire Suppression On Aquatic Invertebrates In Ephemeral Wetlands Embedded In Longleaf Pine Forests, Hailey E. Baker
Honors College Theses
It has been established for many years that longleaf pine forests require the ecological disturbance of fire in order to maintain a balanced ecosystem. However, a crucial part of these forests has become nearly excluded from prescribed burning. Ephemeral wetlands embedded within longleaf pine forests are a unique and dynamic seasonal habitat that provide homes, refuge, and breeding grounds for a large array of taxa. Past research suggests that fire suppression around ephemeral wetlands is causing harm to many species of amphibians and other herpetofauna, especially threatened species like the flatwoods salamander. However, other species have not been as well …
Replenishing Qualities Of Prayer, Morgan A. Kennon
Replenishing Qualities Of Prayer, Morgan A. Kennon
Honors College Theses
Abstract
This study focused on the cognitive realm of self-control, which includes attention control and problem-solving. We used a challenging cognitive task to induce ego depletion, defined as the loss of self-control subsequent to exercising control. After removing students’ self-control in a laboratory setting, we tested whether prayer could possibly replenish lost self-control. Prior research has indicated that prayer may invoke self-control, and religious individuals report higher levels of self-control overall. Although prayer failed to return lost self-control in the current study, results provided additional support for a positive relationship between self-reported religiosity/spirituality and self-control.
Presence Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Mosquitoes In Southeastern Georgia, Angelica C. Tumminello
Presence Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Mosquitoes In Southeastern Georgia, Angelica C. Tumminello
Honors College Theses
Canine heartworm disease is caused by the filarial nematode Dirofilaria immitis, which is transmitted by at least 25 known species of mosquito vectors. This study sought to understand which species of mosquitoes are present in Bulloch County, Georgia, and which species are transmitting canine heartworm disease. This study also investigated whether particular canine demographics correlated with a greater risk of heartworm disease. Surveillance of mosquitoes was conducted in known heartworm-positive canine locations using traditional gravid trapping and vacuum sampling. Mosquito samples were frozen until deemed inactive, then identified by species and sex. The mosquitoes were then either dissected under …

Steady Heartbeat: Field And Laboratory Studies Indicate Unexpected Resilience To High Temperatures For The Ribbed Mussel Geukensia Demissa, Ashlyn N. Smith Ms.
Honors College Theses
Salt marshes are important ecosystems found along the coast of Georgia. Salt marshes are hosts to diverse organisms that interact with each other to promote many ecosystem services, such as storm buffering and flooding, and absorption of excess nutrients. Among these diverse organisms is the ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa. Mussels are a foundation species in this intertidal landscape, and without them the whole salt marsh would be negatively affected. The purpose of this investigation was to explore the thermal stress response of G. demissa to rising temperatures. Mussels were collected from three locations that were landlocked, close to a …

The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Gut Immune Response Of Cat Fleas (Ctenocephalides Felis), Clark Hall
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Gut Immune Response Of Cat Fleas (Ctenocephalides Felis), Clark Hall
Honors College Theses
Fleas transmit numerous deadly and debilitating diseases, including the causative agents of murine typhus and plague. Because initial entry of these infectious agents occurs while blood feeding, the immune response in the flea gut is considered to be the first line of defense against invading microbes. However, relatively few studies have identified the flea immune molecules that effectively resist or limit infection in the gut. In other hematophagous insects, an immediate immune response to imbibed pathogens is the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we utilized cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) to investigate whether natural infections …

Assessment Of The Toxicological Effects Of Cnt-Ab In Mice Followed By Microwave Hyperthermia 14 Days Post Treatment., Andrew C. Mixson
Assessment Of The Toxicological Effects Of Cnt-Ab In Mice Followed By Microwave Hyperthermia 14 Days Post Treatment., Andrew C. Mixson
Honors College Theses
Serious side effects and treatment resistance are the main impediments to successful cancer therapy. A variety of nanoparticles have been used for localized, site-specific treatment that prevent or circumvent these impediments. Microwaves alone have been previously used for thermal ablation of various tumors, setting precedence for their successful use in live organisms. In cell culture studies, it has been observed that multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) instantly and efficiently absorb microwaves, causing hyperthermia of cells in direct contact with them with unnoticed harm to other cells. It is hypothesized that a treatment can be developed based on a safe microwave heating …
Investigating The Toxicology Of Intramuscular Injected Cnt-Ab In Mice Followed By Microwave Hyperthermia., Conner Clark
Investigating The Toxicology Of Intramuscular Injected Cnt-Ab In Mice Followed By Microwave Hyperthermia., Conner Clark
Honors College Theses
The advent of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has led to a wide range of research in various fields including cancer therapy for targeting specific localized and site-specific treatment. Carbon nanotubes bound to tumor specific antibodies (Ab) offers specific treatment for cancer cells without affecting surrounding tissue. This treatment makes use of infrared absorptive properties of nanotubes to incinerate both the nanotube and its associated tumor in vivo. We seek to affirm the initial results of CNT in cancer therapy by investigating the toxicological effect in mice injected with CNT-Ab followed by microwave hypothermia. After 1-week post-injection, mice were sacrificed followed …

A Universal Message: Pope John Xxiii On International Order In The Postwar World, Joseph E. Esparza
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Pope John XXIII’s 1963 encyclical Pacem in terris encapsulates the church’s vision and teaching for international society. This work attempts to explain and trace the origins of these teachings and demonstrate their evolution over the period in responding to contemporary societal questions. Steeped in a natural law theory revived by philosopher Jacques Maritain, co-author of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this paper examines Pope John XXIII’s influences and responses to internationalism and world peace after World War II.

The Devil Is In Your Closet: 48 Square Feet Can Change Everything, Tracey G. Keim
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
Using a "real" grocery list, cash money, and an unexpected situation, attendees put themselves in the shoes (or socks) of the children-at-risk and families who need support in a hands on, solution centered workshop. Workshop participants walk away with culturally relevant materials that will allow them to find funding for a 6'x8' corner of hope--at little or no cash cost. But that makes all the difference in the world.

Animating The Library’S Value: Developing An Information Literacy Cartoon, Karen Bronshteyn
Animating The Library’S Value: Developing An Information Literacy Cartoon, Karen Bronshteyn
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
An academic library was asked to create a brief, compelling, attention-grabbing marketing tool that convinces students to choose library resources over Google. After numerous discussions and a brief student survey, the format of the marketing tool was selected, an animated video, and a ballpark cost was obtained.
Year-end funds were allocated for an animated video to be dubbed “Hunt Library vs. Google”. Followed by an abbreviated vendor selection and an arduous down-payment process, collaborative work began. We provided an example video that we wished to emulate. The video showed a student in a boat fishing (narrated as “drowning”) in a …

An Engaging, Hands-On Activity For Evaluating Sources Through Problem-Based Learning, Brooke J. Taxakis, Elizabeth Dobbins
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
How can we facilitate first-year student engagement with critical Framework concepts, especially in a one-shot class? In this workshop, we will introduce an active learning activity designed to teach source evaluation in a 50-minute class. The activity, which incorporates elements of problem-based learning and uses a flipped classroom approach, was added to our institution’s first-year experience course. Prompting students to consider a local issue, the activity requires students to evaluate sources represented as “source cards,” choose sources they would use in the context of the assignment, and justify their decisions. Motivated by the challenge and relevance of the activity, students …
