Assessing The Utility Of Environmental Dna Techniques To Monitor White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Setiferus) Abundance On The Georgia Coast, Raven Hurt
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys have developed over the last decade from once being a novel tool to now acting as an effective technology often used in complement to traditional capture surveys for assessing the distribution of organisms in freshwater and marine environments. However, many uncertainties on how to properly develop, operate, and analyze eDNA based techniques still hinder this technology effectiveness in the field. The white shrimp, Litopenaeus setiferus, is a common, commercially and recreationally important species in the United States, with landings exceeding $254 million in 2020. L. setiferus is also used as a key indicator species to changes …

Evaluating St. Catherines Island's Shoreline, Vegetation Line, And The Locations Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nests, Sydney O. Davis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
St. Catherines Island is a highly dynamic barrier island on the Georgia coast that is also federally listed critical nesting habitat for loggerhead sea turtles. Understanding how St. Catherines’ shoreline and vegetation is changing over time is geographically important as a potential template for other barrier islands. Measuring sea turtle nest locations will provide insight into their natural patterns and how they adjust those locations on a changing barrier island. Analyzing Moving Boundaries Using R (AMBUR) is implemented in this research to assess the movement of the vegetation and shorelines from 2005-2017 using the End Point Rate (EPR) and Linear …

The Association of Demographic Characteristics and Social Vulnerability With COVID-19 Outcomes
by

(Under the Direction of Gulzar Shah)
ABSTRACT
This research explored 102 Illinois counties' COVID-19 data to determine whether demographic characteristics and social vulnerability are associated with increased vulnerability to COVID-19 infections and deaths. COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting vulnerable groups and has been deadlier for African American and Hispanic people. The findings of this research will contribute to the knowledge base regarding social vulnerability and assist public health officials in targeting resources and designing interventions. This study used a retrospective cross-sectional design to assess demographic characteristics of …

Design Of Compact Signal Distribution Device For Hoffman Reflex Methodologic Applications In Sports Medicine, Abayomi E. Folaranmi
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
A study is presented on the design of compact sized signal distribution device for Hoffman reflex methodological applications in sports medicine. Established conventional method for measuring and recording human or animal nervous system response to external electrical stimulus was considered in this study. Challenges with measuring and recording techniques which introduces inaccuracies and unreliability of reflex response data obtained was analyzed, this work is aimed at improving the reliability of H-reflex d measuring and recording technique for the purpose of reducing inaccuracies introduced to data obtained because of conventional methodologic approach. Inaccuracies due to changes in subject muscle geometry and …

Zika Virus Concern And Preventative Behaviors During Pregnancy: Analysis Of 2017 Georgia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Data, Priya R. Nair, Christine E. Stauber
Zika Virus Concern And Preventative Behaviors During Pregnancy: Analysis Of 2017 Georgia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System Data, Priya R. Nair, Christine E. Stauber
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Zika virus infection can cause severe health complications in pregnant women such as microcephaly and other congenital anomalies in the developing fetus but it can be prevented. It is imperative to develop an understanding of concern about Zika virus among pregnant women as this can influence their Zika virus preventative behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of Zika virus concern among women in Georgia with live births in 2017 and to examine the frequency of condom use among those who were sexually active during their most recent pregnancy.
Methods: This cross- sectional study used …

Using Photovoice To Measure Learning Objectives At Camp With Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Delaney M. Grimm
Using Photovoice To Measure Learning Objectives At Camp With Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Delaney M. Grimm
Honors College Theses
This thesis explores what qualitative objectives adults with developmental disabilities learn and comprehend at a weeklong camp that is meant to enhance interests, abilities, and social skills. The methodology used is Photovoice analysis which allows an individual who either has difficulties verbally expressing themselves or is nonverbal to still participate in question and answer focus groups. For data analysis, my categories relate back to the six domains of recreational therapy: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, cognitive, and leisure.

An Investigative Study Of Combustion And Emissions With Noise And Vibrations Of Synthetic Fuels Within An Aero-Gas Turbine, Camille J. Phillips
An Investigative Study Of Combustion And Emissions With Noise And Vibrations Of Synthetic Fuels Within An Aero-Gas Turbine, Camille J. Phillips
Honors College Theses
The pollution from the aerospace transportation is rapidly becoming the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The FAA expects aviation emissions to almost triple by 2050, making the aerospace industry responsible for the release of approximately 25% of the global carbon dioxide budget. These aviation emissions, including CO2 and NOx, as well as other GHGs, contribute to the destruction of ozone layer. Carbon dioxide emissions have a particularly negative effect on humans, leading to airway diseases especially in children and elderly. To combat the addition of further GHG emissions into the atmosphere, it is necessary to minimize the usage …

For Good Measure: Assessing The Impact Of Game-Based Instruction In The Archives, Autumn M. Johnson, Dawn Nikki Cannon-Rech
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
Presented at Society of Georgia Archivists annual meeting
Game-based instructional programs can provide creative, hands-on learning opportunities while protecting valuable collections. This presentation will reflect on the experience of using game-based instructional techniques to successfully develop an Escape Game that engaged a campus community with archival sources and authentic learning. Sensory game immersion provided authentic engagement with the materiality of collections, their historical context, and the deeper critical narratives within the collection. Tasks were designed to engage learning objectives that explored archival conceptualization, discovery, and interpretation. The successful program increased awareness of the archival collections throughout the University community …

The Cataclysmic Desire For Power: The Irish Rebellion Of 1641, Clare Marie Nee
The Cataclysmic Desire For Power: The Irish Rebellion Of 1641, Clare Marie Nee
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Irish Rebellion of 1641 is particularly vital to understanding the political, religious, and social tensions that still remain an issue today in Northern Ireland. This essay investigates the tensions between the English and the Irish, and determines that there is not one single cause that fueled the tensions, but rather that it is a culmination of religious, social, and economic circumstances that led to the devastation of the rebellion on both sides of the war.
Divine Suppressors: Bigamy In The Eighteenth-Century Criminal Justice System, Luke Hs Horton
Divine Suppressors: Bigamy In The Eighteenth-Century Criminal Justice System, Luke Hs Horton
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The criminal justice system in eighteenth-century England was an integral part of European society. The legal system had always been associated with several facets of everyday life and touched upon the lives of those in every class of European society. One of England’s oldest and most significant courthouses was the Old Bailey, which held thousands of trials and sessions over the two hundred and forty years it was active. Out of the wide variety of cases to choose from, ten sexual offences revolving around bigamy were selected to present how the criminal justice system leaked into different areas of life. …
