Gas Feedback On Stellar Bar Evolution, Ingo Berentzen, Isaac Shlosman, Inma Martinez-Valpuesta, Clayton Heller Sep 2007

Gas Feedback On Stellar Bar Evolution, Ingo Berentzen, Isaac Shlosman, Inma Martinez-Valpuesta, Clayton Heller

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We analyze evolution of live disk-halo systems with gas fractions, fgas ≤ 8% of the disk mass, for 5 Gyr. Specifically, we have addressed the issue of angular momentum (J) transfer from the gas to the stellar bar and its effect on the bar. We find that the bar weakening, reported in the literature, is not related to the gas, but is caused by the vertical buckling instability in the gas-poor disks and by a steep stellar heating by the central mass concentration (CMC) in the gas-rich disks. However, the gas has a profound effect on the …

Activating A Research Context In Art And Design Practice, Nancy De Freitas Jul 2007

Activating A Research Context In Art And Design Practice, Nancy De Freitas

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Practice-based research in art and design is the focus of postgraduate programmes at many universities. The term is useful when practice constitutes a critical part of the research methodology resulting in a form of research through practice. This study uses one such postgraduate programme to examine student researchers’ understanding of their practice-based research methods, organisation of their studio processes and awareness of learning. A structured interview was used to investigate: 1) how artists and designers use documentation as part of their creative practice; 2) what forms and processes constitute this activity; 3) what the artist’s or designer’s perception is of …

A Model Of Student Success: Coaching Students To Develop Critical Thinking Skills In Introductory Biology Courses, Susan Chaplin Jul 2007

A Model Of Student Success: Coaching Students To Develop Critical Thinking Skills In Introductory Biology Courses, Susan Chaplin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Science students who perform poorly in introductory science classes often don’t know how to do better because they “don’t know that they don’t know”, and they have poor critical thinking and problem solving skills. The current study describes how modeling and coaching students in “active study” improves higher order thinking skills. The data show that students who received such coaching performed significantly better on exams by the end of the semester compared to control groups. Modeling and coaching “active study” behavior is essential to ensure that students build confidence in their ability to study science and remain in the science …

Exploring Reflective Engagement That Promotes Understanding In College Classrooms, Franco Zengaro, Asghar Iran-Nejad Jul 2007

Exploring Reflective Engagement That Promotes Understanding In College Classrooms, Franco Zengaro, Asghar Iran-Nejad

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated student engagement in class discussions in a university-level, literature-based writing class. The research questions were 1) Does multiple-source learning provide a new lens for the observation of reflective teaching and learning practices? 2) Is there evidence that shows that the practices adopted by one teacher actually relied on and fostered this kind of thinking among students, and if so, what were those practices? The participants were 22 university students and their instructor, chosen because of the instructor’s interest in improving class discussions. Data were collected over one semester through videotapes, formal and informal interviews, and class documents …

Quiet Awakening: Spinning Yarns From Granny's Table In The New Rural South, Angela Mcneal Haynes Jul 2007

Quiet Awakening: Spinning Yarns From Granny's Table In The New Rural South, Angela Mcneal Haynes

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is an inquiry into generational stories from my Granny's table. It is an exploration of my lived experience as a first generation doctoral student who negates the truths of a rural Southern upbringing steeped in issues of race, class and gender. . Building upon the works of Falk (2004), Freire (2002), He (2003, 2006, in-press), Weis (2006) and Weis and Fine (1998, 2003), I explored the arenas of place, class, and race, particularly the intermingling of multiple realities and contested in-between space and Southern female identities. Family members who raised and nurtured me are the main characters in the …

View From An Elder: Closing Essay, Joellen Broome

University Libraries: Faculty Publications

Excerpt: The history of the book seems direct and pure. It exemplifies only positive aspects of advances in civilization and the preservation of those accomplishments for generations to come. Rather indisputable, we assume. Yet there is the dark side, always a dark side, to human endeavors even the most well meant ones.

Seasonal Habitat Use Of The Florida Manatee (Trichecus Manatus Latirostris) In The Crystal River Natural Refuge With Regards To Natural And Anthropogenic Factors, Ryan Willard Berger May 2007

Seasonal Habitat Use Of The Florida Manatee (Trichecus Manatus Latirostris) In The Crystal River Natural Refuge With Regards To Natural And Anthropogenic Factors, Ryan Willard Berger

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Natural and anthropogenic factors work together to influence species habitat use. Kings Bay in Crystal River, Florida serves as critical habitat for the Florida manatee, but is also used extensively by humans. This study documented the seasonal dispersion and behavioral patterns of manatees in Kings Bay with regards to natural and anthropogenic factors from May 2005-June 2006. Survey stations were established across the bay and the number of manatees, people in the water, and boats were counted. The behavioral patterns of four major states were recorded using focal animal observations. During the winter, manatees aggregated in areas containing both springs …

Chemical Signaling And Resource Use By African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Erek Stephen Napora May 2007

Chemical Signaling And Resource Use By African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Erek Stephen Napora

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In polygynous, sexually dimorphic species like the African elephant, Loxodonta africana, resource distribution influences female dispersion, while the location of females shapes male dispersion. Human constriction of viable habitat has affected elephant movements and impact. Elephants travel in matriarchal family groups, as single males or bachelor groups often looking for receptive females, and in mixed associations. Waterholes serve to meet the physical needs of elephants and as areas for information exchange, especially for males in search of females. When widely spaced, waterholes may be impacted heavily by elephants. I examined elephant use of a permanent waterhole to determine 1) the …

Anti-Insect Defensive Behaviors Of Equines After West Nile Virus Infection, Linsey Renee Cozzie May 2007

Anti-Insect Defensive Behaviors Of Equines After West Nile Virus Infection, Linsey Renee Cozzie

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

West Nile Virus is an important arbovirus (virus transmitted by arthropods) that has recently affected the health of both humans and animals in the United States. West Nile fever was first identified in the US in 1999. West Nile virus (WNV), vectored by mosquitoes, has had a detrimental impact on domestic horse health with over 23,000 equine cases in the United States since 1999. Previous research has focused on how this disease progresses and affects equids days to weeks post infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate permanent equine behavioral changes. Specifically, I examined if surviving this disease …

Infaunal Abundance And Diversity In Vegetated And Unvegetated Areas Of A Georgia Salt Marsh, Anthony Lee Zukoff May 2007

Infaunal Abundance And Diversity In Vegetated And Unvegetated Areas Of A Georgia Salt Marsh, Anthony Lee Zukoff

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Various commercially important marine species are known to utilize the salt marsh; research has shown that marsh infauna play an important role in the diets of these species. The distribution and abundance of some of these infauna has been shown to be influenced by vegetative cover. In 2001, salt marshes along the coast of Georgia began to die, resulting in the loss of the dominant vegetation. During the summer of 2005, six 0.5 x 0.5 meter quadrats were haphazardly placed and set up permanently in the low marsh at two study sites along the Crooked River in vegetated and unvegetated …

Georgia Virtual School: Baseline Data On Revenues And Expenditures, James Kelly Sigman May 2007

Georgia Virtual School: Baseline Data On Revenues And Expenditures, James Kelly Sigman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

No Child Left Behind legislation continues to be a driving force for school districts, allowing virtual schools to become a tool that supplements the curriculum of local schools by offering everything from remedial courses to advanced placement courses. Over the years, research has begun to show the effectiveness of online learning as compared to traditional classroom instruction, but the issues of funding and cost effectiveness still have questions to be resolved. In 2005, the Georgia legislature passed Senate Bill 33 creating the Georgia Virtual School. The researcher sought to provide decision makers of the Georgia Virtual School baseline data on …
