Assortative Mating In Ixodes Scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) Ticks? And Ixodes Scapularis Infest Male Deer More Often Than Female Deer At Savannah River Site, (Aiken, Sc), Jenny Dickson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this study we explored the hypothesis that the mitochondrial genetic diversity observed in Ixodes Scapularis ticks in the Southeastern United States is maintained through assortative mating. The study of 319 couples of ticks collected in copula from deer at the Savannah River Site (Aiken, SC) showed that ticks assigned to mitochondrial (12SrDNA and d-loop genes) phylogenetic monophyletic clades do not chose their mating partner based on genetic similarity or genetic diversity. The genetic composition of couples did not differ significantly from random choice. Our data indicate that if genetic diversity is maintained in this tick population, this cannot be …
The Influence Of The Initiation Of A Graded Exercise Protocol On Dynamic Postural Stability Following A Concussion, Lauryn Hunter
The Influence Of The Initiation Of A Graded Exercise Protocol On Dynamic Postural Stability Following A Concussion, Lauryn Hunter
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Current post-concussion assessment tools may lack sensitivity in identifying recovery. Athletes demonstrating decreased postural control may have an increased likelihood of suffering sports-related injury. Exercise has been shown to briefly alter static postural control and the visual contribution to static postural stability deteriorates with moderate intensity exercise. Gait variability, defined as the fluctuation in gait characteristic between steps, is a sensitive measure of postural stability in populations with higher level gait disorders. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of a progressive exertional return-to-play program on dynamic postural stability following a concussion. Design: Prospective longitudinal. Setting: …
Does The Presence Of A Non-Coincident Visual Spatial Pattern Facilitate Spatial Pattern Learning? Implications For A Dedicated Spatial Pattern Learning System, Scott Katz
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Spatial pattern learning is defined as an ability to learn spatial relationships of objects in space without the use of discrete visual landmarks or environmental geometry (Brown & Terrinoni, 1996). Spatial pattern learning has been suggested to be a distinct form of learning because it is not affected by cue competition and has been shown to occur in the absence of discrete landmarks and environmental geometry (Brown, Yang, & DiGian, 2002; Sturz Brown, & Kelly, 2009). In the proposed study, the distinctness of spatial pattern learning was investigated. Specifically, human participants searched in an interactive 3-D computer generated virtual environment …
Irreconcilable Oppositions: "Es Muss Sein" And The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, Angela C. Milton
Irreconcilable Oppositions: "Es Muss Sein" And The Unbearable Lightness Of Being, Angela C. Milton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel written in response to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's myth of eternal return. Through questioning Nietzsche's myth, Kundera creates an existential framework that rejects eternal return and illustrates his foundational concepts of lightness and weight. Kundera posits that in the absence of eternal return, life becomes meaningless because all of the moments of a person's life disappear the moment that life ceases to be. In order to combat this terrifying prospect, Kundera suggests that a person must combat fate. Likewise, a person may discover how to give significance to life …
Variation In Egg Components: A Study Of Maternal Investment And Resource Partitioning In The Nesting Loggerhead Sea Turtle; Estimating Genic Variation And Mapping Genetic Lineage Of A Rare Captive Helodermatid Population: Heloderma Horridum Charlesbogerti, Ketan V. Patel
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Loggerhead sea turtles have the highest egg yields of any oviparous non-avian reptiles. Blood urea nitrogen levels increased as the season progressed while total blood albumen and total protein levels decreased. Wet egg mass (H = 1.7719 df = 2 p = 0.0375*) and albumen mass (H = 6.0507 df = 2 p = 0.0485*) significantly decreased across the nesting season however, wet yolk did not. Analysis of dried egg components showed that dry yolk and albumen did not differ across the nesting season. In addition on no seasonal change in dried egg components, hatchling size was conserved across the …
Recognizing The Other: Training's Ability To Improve Other Race Individuation, W. Grady Rose
Recognizing The Other: Training's Ability To Improve Other Race Individuation, W. Grady Rose
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Members of one race or ethnicity are less able to individuate members of another race compared to their own race peers. This phenomenon is known as the other race effect (ORE) or the cross race effect (CRE). Not only are individuals less able to identify members of the other race but they are also more likely to pick those individuals out of a crowd. The categorizationindividuation model predicts that this deficit arises from a lack of motivated individuation; in which members of the other race are remembered at the category level as a prototype while own race members are remembered …
In Vitro Cultivation Of The Microphallid Trematode Gynaecotyla Adunca, Jenna West
In Vitro Cultivation Of The Microphallid Trematode Gynaecotyla Adunca, Jenna West
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
It is important to study the cultivation of parasites in vitro for many reasons, such as to aid in developing antihelminthic drugs and vaccines, to eliminate the need for vertebrate hosts in parasite culture, and to more easily study the genetics and the biology of parasites. Trematodes have complex life cycles with multiple hosts which makes them difficult to grow in vitro. However, microphallid trematodes are excellent candidates for parasite in vitro cultivation because they are short lived and progenetic. The goal of my study was to optimize in vitro culture conditions for the microphallid trematode, Gynaecotyla adunca. …
Daily Walking And Life Expectancy Of Elderly People In The Iowa 65+ Rural Health Study, Hani M. Samawi
Daily Walking And Life Expectancy Of Elderly People In The Iowa 65+ Rural Health Study, Hani M. Samawi
Biostatistics: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the hypothesis that outdoor daily walking, as an exercise, has an effect on the rate of mortality among those elderly people in the Iowa 65+ Rural Health Study (RHS). RHS is a prospective longitudinal cohort study of 8 years follow-up from 1981 to 1989. It consists of a random sample of 3,673 individuals (1,420 men and 2,253 women) aged 65 or older living in Washington and Iowa counties of the State of Iowa. Our analysis was conducted only on those non-institutional individuals who could without any help walk across a small room; …
