The Power Of Animations In Stem Courses, Adrian Heinz, Xin Xu Mar 2014

The Power Of Animations In Stem Courses, Adrian Heinz, Xin Xu

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)

We demonstrate educational web-based animations to facilitate teaching and learning in STEM courses. These animations were developed by IT students who closely worked with the researchers and faculty. The animations are later used in the classroom to explain specific concepts to students of STEM disciplines such as chemistry, biology and mathematics. The interactive nature of the animations allows students to become active participants of the learning process. In order to measure their value as a teaching and learning tool, pre and post survey data was collected and analyzed.

An Asymmetry In Shape And Shape Word Interference: Evidence For Core Geometric Knowledge, Joshua E. Edwards, Ty W. Boyer, Bradley R. Sturz Mar 2014

An Asymmetry In Shape And Shape Word Interference: Evidence For Core Geometric Knowledge, Joshua E. Edwards, Ty W. Boyer, Bradley R. Sturz

Psychology: Faculty Presentations (2009-2022)

Nativists have postulated fundamental geometric knowledge that predates linguistic and symbolic thought. Central to these claims is the existence of an isolated cognitive system dedicated to processing geometric information. Testing such hypotheses presents challenges due to difficulties in eliminating the combination of geometric and non-geometric information through language. We present evidence using a modified matching interference paradigm that an incongruent shape word interferes with identifying a shape, but an incongruent shape does not interfere with identifying a shape word. This asymmetry in shape and shape word interference suggests that shape words activate spatial representations of shapes but shapes do not …

Orientation Via Enclosure Geometry By Blind-Folded Adults: Evidence Against View-Based Matching Theories Of Spatial Orientation, Marshall L. Green, Katherine A. Gaskin, Jonathan E. Roberts, Bradley R. Sturz Mar 2014

Orientation Via Enclosure Geometry By Blind-Folded Adults: Evidence Against View-Based Matching Theories Of Spatial Orientation, Marshall L. Green, Katherine A. Gaskin, Jonathan E. Roberts, Bradley R. Sturz

Psychology: Faculty Presentations (2009-2022)

Although spatial orientation via geometric properties of an environment is an ability shared across species, debate remains concerning similarities and differences in the underlying mechanism(s). One theoretical account of spatial orientation suggests that participants match visual memories to current visual perception and navigate to reduce discrepancy between the two. We tested a view-based matching account of spatial orientation by training disoriented and blind-folded human participants to search by touch for a target object hidden in one of four locations marked by distinctive textural cues located in the corners of a rectangular enclosure. Following training, we removed the distinctive textural cues …

Cholera Transmission Dynamic Models For Public Health Practitioners, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung Feb 2014

Cholera Transmission Dynamic Models For Public Health Practitioners, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung

Epidemiology: Faculty Publications (2002-2018)

Great progress has been made in mathematical models of cholera transmission dynamics in recent years. However, little impact, if any, has been made by models upon public health decision-making and day-to-day routine of epidemiologists. This paper provides a brief introduction to the basics of ordinary differential equation models of cholera transmission dynamics. We discuss a basic model adapted from Codeço (2001), and how it can be modified to incorporate different hypotheses, including the importance of asymptomatic or inapparent infections, and hyperinfectious V. choleraeand human-to-human transmission. We highlight three important challenges of cholera models: (1) model misspecification and parameter uncertainty, …

Folklore For A New Generation: Charles Chesnutt's Updated Trickster Figure, Peter Mccollum Jan 2014

Folklore For A New Generation: Charles Chesnutt's Updated Trickster Figure, Peter Mccollum

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Amidst a surge of plantation fiction writing during the era of American Realism, Charles Chesnutt was arguably one of the most controversial yet prolific authors to address the recent advent of slavery. The Conjure Woman was a publication of seven frame narratives that employed the traditional style of a former slave telling tales of “the old days,” and though Chesnutt's work may have mirrored such authors as Thomas Nelson Page, the tales broke from tradition with surprisingly stark accounts that are clearly based on Chesnutt's own conversations with former slaves. Much like another contemporary, Joel Chandler Harris, Chesnutt looks backward …

Effects Of Organic And Conventional Agricultural Practices On Soil Microbial Communities And Molecular Detection Of Soil Borne Disease, Holli K. Milner Jan 2014

Effects Of Organic And Conventional Agricultural Practices On Soil Microbial Communities And Molecular Detection Of Soil Borne Disease, Holli K. Milner

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Agricultural practices affect soil microbial communities and health through the input of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and cycling of crop rotation. By examining the microbial community structure, we analyzed how microbial species respond to the environment that individual farms create. Early detection of soil borne disease is essential for agricultural success. However, monitoring incidence of disease based on plant growth response to pathogenic inoculation may not reveal the amount of pathogenic DNA in soil. A comparative study of tomato production systems was conducted by analysis of soil microbial community structure from four farms in Southeast Georgia for the years 2012 and …

Employing Concept Mapping As A Pre-Writing Strategy To Help Efl Learners Better Generate Argumentative Compositions, Ibrahim M. R. Al-Shaer Ph.D. Jan 2014

Employing Concept Mapping As A Pre-Writing Strategy To Help Efl Learners Better Generate Argumentative Compositions, Ibrahim M. R. Al-Shaer Ph.D.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of employing concept mapping at a pre-writing stage on English as a foreign language (EFL) students' ability to generate better argumentative essays. Thirty-eight participants were randomly assigned to two groups participating in Writing II course at Al-Quds Open University (QOU). Both groups had the same teacher. The control group received instruction as required in the textbook only, and the experimental group were additionally required to construct concept maps at the pre-writing stage and compose essays based on the constructed maps. All participants were required to sit for pre- and post-tests …

Time Efficiency, Written Feedback, And Student Achievement In Inquiry-Oriented Biology Labs, John M. Basey, Anastasia P. Maines, Clinton D. Francis Jan 2014

Time Efficiency, Written Feedback, And Student Achievement In Inquiry-Oriented Biology Labs, John M. Basey, Anastasia P. Maines, Clinton D. Francis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We examined how different styles of written feedback by graduate-student teaching assistants (GTAs) in college intro biology lab (USA) influenced student achievement and related the different styles to time efficiency. We quantified GTA feedback on formative lab reports and student achievement on two different types of assessments, a quiz in 2010 and a summative lab report in 2011. We evaluated the extent to which three categories of written feedback impacted student achievement (grade discrepancy between actual and ideal, short direct comments, and in-depth explanatory comments). Student achievement was best explained by both grade discrepancy and short direct comments in 2010 …

Performance Comparison Of Various Order Picking Methods In Different Behavioral Contexts, Jelle De Vries, Rene De Koster, Daan Stam Jan 2014

Performance Comparison Of Various Order Picking Methods In Different Behavioral Contexts, Jelle De Vries, Rene De Koster, Daan Stam

13th IMHRC Proceedings (Cincinnati, Ohio. USA – 2014)

Three manual picker-to-parts order picking methods (parallel picking, zone picking, and dynamic zone picking) are employed in an experimental warehouse setup and compared in terms of productivity, quality, and job satisfaction. Participants worked in teams and were subject to either an individual- based, or a team-based incentive scheme. Furthermore, the influence of individual participants’ dominant regulatory focus (promotion or prevention) was taken into account. The outcomes show that in parallel picking an incentive system focused on individual performance is beneficial for productivity and quality compared to an incentive system focused on team performance, whereas team-based incentives are more productive in …

Stimulus Modality And The Rotational Error: An Examination Of The Various Reorientation Accounts In Humans Using A 3d Virtual Environment, Samuel P. Police Jan 2014

Stimulus Modality And The Rotational Error: An Examination Of The Various Reorientation Accounts In Humans Using A 3d Virtual Environment, Samuel P. Police

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Reorientation occurs when an organism enters a novel environment and utilizes cues within said environment to get its bearings. Though reorientation occurs, little is known about which cues are utilized to reorient and the mechanism underlying this reorientation process. Three competing accounts of how the reorientation process occurs were presented and discussed in terms of which cues are predicted to be utilized in reorientation: the geometric module, the associative strength model, and the adaptive-combination view. In the present experiment, human participants were trained in an immersive, 3D virtual environment trapezoid to local a goal location in the presence of either …

Temporal Patterns Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Communities And Organic Matter Standing Stock Availability In A Coastal Floodplain (Altamaha River, Georgia), Erica L. Johnson Jan 2014

Temporal Patterns Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Communities And Organic Matter Standing Stock Availability In A Coastal Floodplain (Altamaha River, Georgia), Erica L. Johnson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

River floodplain habitats of the Southeastern United States are sites of high biological productivity that rely on a predictable flooding event as a keystone process. This study took place in a river-floodplain area of the Altamaha River, an unimpounded large-order river in the Coastal Plains region of the US. This study aims to investigate how aquatic macroinvertebrate communities changed over the course of the annual flood pulse. I predicted that the communities would be different and that the differences would be driven by hydrology at the main stem and organic matter standing stock availability. I took quantitative samples of benthic …

Is Environmental Concern In Advertising Related To The State Of The Economy? An Exploratory Study From The Wall Street Journal 2007-2011, Lindsay Larson, Luther T. Denton, Anni Rainio

AMTP Proceedings 2014

This study is an attempt to determine the relationship between the prevalence of environmental cues in advertisements and the state of the U.S. economy. Advertisements sampled from the Wall Street Journal, a preeminent daily business news publication in the United States, were examined during the years 2007, 2009, and 2011 to determine this relationship. While few direct environmental appeals were found within the sample of advertisements, a variety of indirect environmental cues were utilized for analysis. The results show that there is a quadratic relationship between advertisers’ use of indirect environmental cues and the state of the economy, such that …

Exploring Impact Philanthropy, Altruistic, Hedonic, And Egoistic Motivations To Support Animal Causes, Clinton Amos, Gary R. Holmes, Anthony T. Allred

AMTP Proceedings 2014

Due to unpredictable economic turbulence, it is imperative that nonprofit organizations understand and implement segmentation practices to better target donors to maintain continual growth in donations. While such strategies are well implemented in for-profit arenas, non-profit organizations still lag behind in the implementation of segmentation and targeting practices. The targeting of donors by nonprofit organizations tends to be unfocused and sporadic at best. Early research on the practice of segmenting potential donors suggest that nonprofit firms should resist profiling their existing donors based upon demographic characteristics alone and should rely on examining demographic variables in relation to meaningful motivational forces. …
