Our Library Can Help You! Using Multicultural Elements From Tesol For Non-Native Speakers Of English, Bernadette Maria Lopez-Fitzsimmons Sep 2015

Our Library Can Help You! Using Multicultural Elements From Tesol For Non-Native Speakers Of English, Bernadette Maria Lopez-Fitzsimmons

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This presentation will focus on integrating multicultural elements from TESOL in Information and Media Literacies for non-native speakers of English in public and academic libraries. Public Libraries have been applying multicultural elements in attending to immigrants so that they learn to use libraries. They have been successful in providing ESL classes for free through content-based instruction. Immigrants learn about American libraries and their resources while learning English. Larger public libraries have created positions such as Bi-/Multilingual Librarians, ESL/Multicultural Coordinators, resident Social Workers, Multicultural Education Specialists, etc. Providing multicultural competency skills training to staff is important in creating a supportive, nurturing …

Testing And Templates: Building Effective Research Guides, Patricia Gimenez, Stephanie Grimm, Katy Parker Sep 2015

Testing And Templates: Building Effective Research Guides, Patricia Gimenez, Stephanie Grimm, Katy Parker

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The Savannah College of Art and Design has nearly 12,000 students at 5 separate campus locations, and offers more than 40 areas of concentration within art and design. The students are incredibly career-minded, and class assignments are built to mimic the professional experience. Through the SCAD Libraries, students have access to nearly 90 databases, many of which are professional level resources, and hundreds of trade and scholarly print journals. Using Spring Share's LibGuides, the small research and instruction team has created a series of course and subject specific research guides to highlight the professional databases and teach valuable information literacy …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Pre-Class Intervention In Establishing An Information Literacy Baseline, Adelia B. Grabowsky Sep 2015

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Pre-Class Intervention In Establishing An Information Literacy Baseline, Adelia B. Grabowsky

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

It is expected that undergraduates entering a BSN clinical program as juniors will possess basic information literacy skills. The reality is that skills vary widely, complicating efforts to provide more advanced, discipline-specific instruction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a pre-class intervention intended to establish an information literacy baseline in newly admitted nursing students. Setting/Participants: Nursing students in the first clinical semester of a BSN program at a large, southeastern, research university. Intervention: Before attending a library instruction class, students watch a short video and complete a worksheet which they bring to class. Outcome Measures: …

Enhancing Student Learning Through Proactive Feedback Based Adaptive Teaching For Engineering Courses, Danda B. Rawat, Chandra Bajracharya Sep 2015

Enhancing Student Learning Through Proactive Feedback Based Adaptive Teaching For Engineering Courses, Danda B. Rawat, Chandra Bajracharya

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a proactive anonymous feedback based adaptive teaching for enhancing student learning for engineering courses. In conventional university teaching, typically, students come to the class and instructors lecture the material, assign home assignments, take exams, etc. After grading assignments or exams, the instructor provides feedback to students. Most of the time, students are reluctant to ask questions or ask instructor to revisit the topic which was already covered. However, there is no immediate anonymous feedback mechanism for each topic or class to notify the instructor about topics which are not clear to students. There are advantages that enhance …

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti Aug 2015

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti

Computing: Faculty Publications

Bipolar quantum agent (BQA), bipolar quantum geometry (BQG) and bipolar dynamic logic (BDL) are introduced based on bipolar complementarity – a logical extension to Niels Bohr’s particle-wave YinYang duality principle. Complete geometrical background independence is proposed and BQG is proven completely background independent which leads to the notion of bipolar quantum superposition – an equilibrium-based logical approach to superposition. It is shown that the logical linearity of BDL can be unified with the physical nonlinearity of bipolar dynamic equilibrium. It is proven that a single polarized photon as a BQA can be logically channeled through the three polarizers in Dirac’s …
