Students’ Experiences With Community In An Open Access Course, Stephanie J. Blackmon, Theresa A. Cullen
Students’ Experiences With Community In An Open Access Course, Stephanie J. Blackmon, Theresa A. Cullen
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Online open access courses have become regular offerings of many universities. Building community and connectedness is an important part of branding and success of such offerings. Our goal was to investigate students’ experiences with community in an open access course. Therefore, in this study, we explored the sense of community of 342 participants in an open access chemistry course. We found that participants did not rate a sense of community as important to them, and did not report feeling very connected to the online course. We will discuss opportunities for building community features in such courses in the future.

Sustainability Showcase (2014-2022)
FMAD Stitch
Amber M. Shelton, Dr. Rachel J. Eike, & Dr. Beth Myers, Fashion Merchandising and Apparel ($2,500)
FMAD Stitch’s focus is to provide custom mending and alteration needs of students, staff, and faculty. This sustainability program serves two groups: FMAD Students and members of the Georgia Southern University campus community. FMAD students have the opportunity to practice skills and techniques learned in the classroom regarding mending, alterations, and tailoring. FMAD students gained hands on training and experience as they prepare to become employed in the fashion industry. The Georgia Southern University campus community saved their personal income by allowing …
Local Efforts Toward Addressing Health Disparities In Dekalb County, Georgia, April Hermstad, Erikka Gilliam, Sedessie Spivey, Zipatly Mendoza
Local Efforts Toward Addressing Health Disparities In Dekalb County, Georgia, April Hermstad, Erikka Gilliam, Sedessie Spivey, Zipatly Mendoza
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: In underserved African American communities throughout DeKalb County, the DeKalb County Board of Health (DCBOH) is implementing community-based initiatives using policy, systems, and environmental improvement approaches to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities by increasing opportunities for nutrition and physical activity.
Methods: The initiatives are being implemented in priority census tracts where the population is at least 40% African American, 30% live below federal poverty level, and 25% did not graduate from high school. Communications promote awareness of the programs, and evaluation activities document processes and outcomes.
Results: To date, implementation of five interventions has affected approximately 276,000 DeKalb …

Assessment Of Medical Needs Of The Hispanic Community In Macon-Bibb County, Georgia, Kim Bélanger-Giguère, Jose Pino, Brad Lian
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Little is known about the health concerns and issues among the Hispanic community in growing, mid-sized cities, such as Macon, Georgia.
Methods: A questionnaire on general health-related issues was given to a sample of 125 Hispanic participants.
Results: The top health concerns of the Hispanic community were diabetes, obesity, and dental hygiene; the most common factors preventing Hispanics from receiving medical treatment were the lack of insurance, language barriers, and copayments or deductibles being too high.
Conclusions: Lack of higher education and the inability to communicate effectively in English may be manifested as difficulties in finding proper information about …
Improved Estimation Of Optimal Cut-Off Point Associated With Youden Index Using Ranked Set Sampling, Jingjing Yin, Hani M. Samawi, Daniel Linder
Improved Estimation Of Optimal Cut-Off Point Associated With Youden Index Using Ranked Set Sampling, Jingjing Yin, Hani M. Samawi, Daniel Linder
Biostatistics: Faculty Publications
A diagnostic cut-off point of a biomarker measurement is needed for classifying a random subject to be either diseased or healthy. However, the cut-off point is usually unknown and needs to be estimated by some optimization criteria. One important criterion is the Youden index, which has been widely adopted in practice. The Youden index, which is defined as the maximum of (sensitivity + specificity −1), directly measures the largest total diagnostic accuracy a biomarker can achieve. Therefore, it is desirable to estimate the optimal cut-off point associated with the Youden index. Sometimes, taking the actual measurements of a biomarker is …

A Long-Term Study Of Ecological Impacts Of River Channelization On The Population Of An Endangered Fish: Lessons Learned For Assessment And Restoration, James Henry Roberts, Gregory B. Anderson, Paul L. Angermeier
A Long-Term Study Of Ecological Impacts Of River Channelization On The Population Of An Endangered Fish: Lessons Learned For Assessment And Restoration, James Henry Roberts, Gregory B. Anderson, Paul L. Angermeier
Biology: Faculty Publications
Projects to assess environmental impact or restoration success in rivers focus on project-specific questions but can also provide valuable insights for future projects. Both restoration actions and impact assessments can become “adaptive” by using the knowledge gained from long-term monitoring and analysis to revise the actions, monitoring, conceptual model, or interpretation of findings so that subsequent actions or assessments are better informed. Assessments of impact or restoration success are especially challenging when the indicators of interest are imperiled species and/or the impacts being addressed are complex. From 1997 to 2015, we worked closely with two federal agencies to monitor habitat …

Irb Processes And Guidelines, Richard E. Cleveland
Leadership, Technology & Human Development: Faculty Presentations
This session is for Students who have completed some coursework in their EdS or EdD program and want to get oriented to the research process and/or students who are about ready to start their action research projects (EdS) or dissertations (EdD).
Dr. Richard E. Cleveland will present an introduction and overview of IRB processes and guidelines. The session will facilitate both small- and whole-group interaction. Students are encouraged to bring current IRB materials (at whatever stage of completion) for peer collaboration.
An Industrial Chemical Used In Coal-Washing Influences Plankton Communities In Freshwater Microcosms, Danielle Turner
An Industrial Chemical Used In Coal-Washing Influences Plankton Communities In Freshwater Microcosms, Danielle Turner
Honors College Theses
In 2014, 4-methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM), an industrial chemical used to wash coal, contaminated drinking water in 300,000 homes in West Virginia, USA and raised concerns about toxicity to humans and freshwater ecosystems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that a concentration of 1 ppm was safe for human exposure. Despite the concern for human consumption, it is important to determine if MCHM has negative effects on aquatic organisms in contaminated water, particularly plankton communities that comprise the base of freshwater food webs. I exposed freshwater plankton communities in microcosms to 0, 0.5, 1 or 3 ppm MCHM under …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nanoparticle-Coupled Proteins In Human Serum Albumin, Kyle M. Mahoney
Synthesis And Characterization Of Nanoparticle-Coupled Proteins In Human Serum Albumin, Kyle M. Mahoney
Honors College Theses
Recently, cancer has become an ever-growing issue and has led to many researchers attempt to unravel the mystery of the disease. This research has led to a promising field of treatment: nanotechnology-coupled pharmaceuticals. Nanoparticles act as a whole unit when in conjugation with other molecules and add to the carrier molecule, most often proteins, benefits the nanoparticles themselves possess. One such carrier protein that can be conjugated with nanoparticles is Human Serum Albumin (HSA). Albumin is of interest in cancer research for two reasons: it is native to the human vasculature so it does not elicit immunological reactions, and it …
