The Influence Of Resource Scarcity And Childhood Socioeconomic Status On In-Group Inclusiveness, Spencer Dobbs
The Influence Of Resource Scarcity And Childhood Socioeconomic Status On In-Group Inclusiveness, Spencer Dobbs
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Millions of individuals worldwide are malnourished and without clean drinking water due to a lack of environmental resources. Resource scarcity is a ubiquitous ecological threat that significantly influences social cognition and behavior. For example, research on resource scarcity has shown that it significantly reduces in-group inclusiveness. In fact, when individuals are primed with resource scarcity, they are significantly less likely to categorize racially ambiguous others as belonging to their racial in-group. The current study aimed to extend this research by examining the impact of resource scarcity on in-group inclusiveness while also accounting for variations of early life environmental hardship (i.e., …
Neon Nature, Jessamy G. Mcmanus Ms.
Neon Nature, Jessamy G. Mcmanus Ms.
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The goal of this work is to explore my painting of nature in our contemporary time, considering the current geological epoch termed the Anthropocene, an era I think of as postnatural. Neon Nature is a collection of portraits of hypernatural creatures I call “pseudo-specimens”. These pseudo-specimens symbolize hypernature, which describes manufactured nature as better than authentic nature. These specimens are painted in vanitas-inspired still life scenes to act as a reminder of our changing nature, or new-nature.
Influenced by living in suburbia where nature is manicured and controlled, I am interested in the divide between the “born” and the “made,” …
Evolutionary Linkage Of Mimetic And Non-Mimetic Color Traits In A Coral Snake Mimicry Complex, John D. Curlis Jr
Evolutionary Linkage Of Mimetic And Non-Mimetic Color Traits In A Coral Snake Mimicry Complex, John D. Curlis Jr
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Color polymorphism in aposematic mimicry systems is a perplexing phenomenon for evolutionary biologists, as theoretically the benefits of converging on a model phenotype should constrain the evolution of phenotypic diversity in these systems (i.e., color polymorphism should not occur). Nevertheless, color polymorphism in mimicry systems is prevalent throughout many taxa. In some of these systems, the evolution of color polymorphism results in the existence of non-mimetic morphs, such as those that are cryptic. The case of ground snakes (Sonora semiannulata) is unique in that color polymorphism encompasses both mimetic and cryptic morphs, as well as individual mimetic and …
A Population Genetic Investigation Of The Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma Bishopi) On Eglin Air Force Base, Alexander S. Wendt
A Population Genetic Investigation Of The Reticulated Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma Bishopi) On Eglin Air Force Base, Alexander S. Wendt
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The reticulated flatwoods salamander (RFS) is an endangered salamander with a unique life history. One of the largest known, best studied refuges for RFS is found on Eglin Air Force Base, and these RFS have been sampled and managed extensively since 2010. My thesis seeks to better understand RFS by using genetic techniques to address several unknowns, including: 1) determining the population structuring of RFS and the manageable units for species conservation, 2) estimating the size and status of populations, 3) understanding dispersal of RFS and factors that influence this, 4) exploring the breeding biology and recruitment patterns of RFS …
Thermal Performance Of A Double-Pipe Heat Exchanger With A Koch Snowflake Fractal Design, Anton Gomez
Thermal Performance Of A Double-Pipe Heat Exchanger With A Koch Snowflake Fractal Design, Anton Gomez
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Double-pipe heat exchangers are the simplest type of heat exchanger and are widely utilized in industrial applications. The effectiveness of double-pipe heat exchangers can be increased by using various heat transfer enhancement techniques. Passive heat transfer enhancement methods are desirable as they do not require moving components and are easy to manufacture and maintain. The focus of this study is to implement a passive heat transfer enhancement method and to investigate how thermal performance is impacted. Specifically, the inner pipe in a heat exchanger will be modified to have a cross-section in accordance with the Koch snowflake fractal pattern. The …
Differentiating The Effects Of Animal-Assisted Versus Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy On Positive Psychological Outcomes Through A Stress Induction Context, Catherine J.V. Jones
Differentiating The Effects Of Animal-Assisted Versus Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy On Positive Psychological Outcomes Through A Stress Induction Context, Catherine J.V. Jones
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The unique benefits of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) such as the human-horse bond, a non-traditional therapy setting, and performing altruistic acts are thought to facilitate positive change in humans. One mechanism by which positive changes occur is through improved coping and resilience in the face of stress. To date, only a handful of correlational studies speak to the potential effects of EFP on resilience-based outcomes. Thus, this study sought to address this gap in the literature by exploring the benefits of EFP compared to traditional Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) in an experimental context. Specifically, we examined the effects of different …
Factors Affecting Growth Rates And Preferred Body Temperatures In Hatchling Gopher Tortoises, Gopherus Polyphemus: Clutch And Sex, Matthew Carey
Factors Affecting Growth Rates And Preferred Body Temperatures In Hatchling Gopher Tortoises, Gopherus Polyphemus: Clutch And Sex, Matthew Carey
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Post hatching growth rates in tortoises can affect size at sexual maturity This study looks at what affect clutch and sex has on hatchling tortoises from these two sites as this data is lacking/insufficient from two populations in Southeast Georgia. Eggs were allowed to incubate in natural nests and then were collected between August 19-21, 2015 and hatched in an incubator in the lab. When they hatched, the tortoises were kept in a single room with a rearing temperature that averaged 26.9° C. Sex was determined using laparoscopy at the end of the study to ensure gonad development and to …
Investigation Of The Effects Of Ionic Interactions In Peptide And Protein Structure, Aimee Lorts
Investigation Of The Effects Of Ionic Interactions In Peptide And Protein Structure, Aimee Lorts
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Proteins and their unique structures are important due to their involvement in every cellular task, but the protein can only function properly when it is in the correct fold. β-sheet peptides and collagen were observed via structural studies. Circular dichroism (CD) determines a protein’s secondary structure. WKWK, a beta-sheet peptide, is known to dissolve in aqueous solutions. However, WKWK was observed to precipitate out of deionized water. To investigate the cause of this precipitation, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used to determine the ion content of the water. Elevated sodium ion concentrations were found to disrupt the stabilizing …

The Biological Stress Response In Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis Macrochirus) To Variations In Environmental Temperature And Dissolved Oxygen Content., Monique Kellman
The Biological Stress Response In Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis Macrochirus) To Variations In Environmental Temperature And Dissolved Oxygen Content., Monique Kellman
Honors College Theses
With the predicted increase in global water temperature and acute hypoxic episodes, knowledge of the effects these stressors can have on local aquatic life is extremely valuable. This study thereby quantified the change in metabolic rate in Bluegill sunfish, in response to increased temperature and low dissolved oxygen concentration, by utilizing intermittent flow respirometry. Both maximum metabolic rate (MMR) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) were determined in response to variations in dissolved oxygen content, specifically > 95% O2 and 40% O2. Additionally, three temperature treatment groups were established, with temperatures of 20, 25 and 30°C in order to …
Comparative Floristic Studies Of Georgian Sandhill Ecosystems Reveals A Dynamic Composition Of Endemics And Generalists, James M. Long, John Schenk
Comparative Floristic Studies Of Georgian Sandhill Ecosystems Reveals A Dynamic Composition Of Endemics And Generalists, James M. Long, John Schenk
Honors College Theses
Sandhill habitats are characterized by sandy, xeric soils that contain a unique assemblage of plants and animals. Similar to the broader long-leaf pine (Pinus palustris) and wire grass (Aristida stricta) ecosystem that sandhills are a subset of, agriculture, development, and habitat modifications have caused sandhill ecosystems to become degraded, putting many species at risk of extinction. Previous studies have focused on diversity within individual sandhills, leaving us with an incomplete understanding of how these communities form, what species are endemic, whether endemics are widespread across sandhills, and how species have adapted to these communities. To gain a more comprehensive understanding …
Novicehood: Exploring Skill Level And How It Relates To Mass Analysis, Justin V. Morales
Novicehood: Exploring Skill Level And How It Relates To Mass Analysis, Justin V. Morales
Honors College Theses
Lithic artifacts are among the most common remnants evidencing our ancestors’ intelligence and survivability. They can reflect many aspects of a culture’s practices and use of natural materials. The analysis of such remains is a mainstay of archaeology, but not all lithic analysis is the same. Analysis varies by method (mass flake analysis, individual flake analysis, etc.), and by the level of experience of the analysts themselves, creating debate on the comparability and the accuracy of each approach. This research is a case study of my effectiveness, being a novice level archaeologist, at Mass Flake analysis, using a contemporary collection …
Don Quixote, Man Of Ink, Nicholas J. Shuber
Don Quixote, Man Of Ink, Nicholas J. Shuber
Honors College Theses
The story of El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes is a novel that has transgressed throughout the years in the forefront of Hispanic literature. The story is a satire to most people, laughing about the idiocy of the books of knight-errantry. Don Quixote has been analyzed as such a comedy ever since its release, and this idea has affected the perspectives of everyone who has researched it before. However, an argument could be made that this is indeed not the only way that the novel can be seen. The idea that is purported in …
Effects Of Mortality Salience On Anti- Atheist Prejudice: A Terror Management Perspective, Cassidy J. Keim
Effects Of Mortality Salience On Anti- Atheist Prejudice: A Terror Management Perspective, Cassidy J. Keim
Honors College Theses
Terror Management Theory argues that mortality salience is an important motivator in how people behave throughout their lives, and can influence how prejudiced individuals become. In this study we triggered participants’ mortality salience to test this claim, as well as measured the attitudes of prejudice have for atheists compared to homosexuals to see if they differ. Mortality salience did not have an effect on prejudice in this experiment, but anti-atheist prejudice was significantly higher than anti-homosexual prejudice. Although these findings are small, they confirm a need for continued research on prejudice against religious minorities, such as atheists, and how to …

Small-Scale Electric Vehicle Dc-Dc Converter For Nano-Grids Applications, Adam Johnston, Mason Johnson, John Sweat, Adel El-Shahat
Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a self-sustained charging system that does not cost you any money on your electric bill? Electric car owners know that even though their cars do not require gasoline to run, they will require electricity and like everyone else that is tied to the grid will have to pay a price per kilowatt hour that is determined by their utility company. With gasoline prices falling somewhat in the past year the hype of electric vehicles has been somewhat less but who knows what the oil market is going to be …

Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins
Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Among other challenges, homeless children often struggle with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems that impair functioning and well-being (Bassuk, et al., 1997). Given the instability of service continuity often present in the lives of homeless families and their children, it is strikingly common for child mental and behavioral disorders to be caught at a later developmental stage among this group compared to both housed and other low-income peers (Grant, et al., 2007). Emergency shelters represent an untapped setting in which to deploy universal, evidence-based screeners for problem behaviors among this population. We implemented universal screening interventions across three shelters serving …

Learning Social Skills Through Natural And Paid Supports, Miyah Sundermeyer
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
I had moved to Atlanta the age of 21 in 2003 with my aunt. Though I was 21 physically, emotionally I behaved at the level of a 14-year-old. I also lacked basic social skills and maturity. While others around me often pointed it out, I could not understand what they were talking about. So my aunt often role played by showing me how I would act. That got me interested in wanting to improve my social skills.
Meanwhile I had attending various programs at the Emory Autism Center where Toni Thomas and Dr, Lauren Castriota taught the difference between what …
