Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)

A mixed methods, action research case study was conducted to investigate the effects of incorporating LEGO robotics into a seventh-grade mathematics curriculum focused on the development of proportional reasoning through the lens of Social Constructivist Theory. This study applied students’ prior knowledge of the distance, rate, and time formula as they used LEGO EV3 robots to calculate the rate of a robot. The information gained was applied to different iterations, and structures, of the formula to support the development of proportional reasoning skills. With 1 in 68 individuals living with autism, most are born with parts of the brain that pick up on social skills. While these skills can be taught, individuals with autism extra special support in learning in this area. Social skills can be taught in two different types of supports being that they are paid and natural supports. Furthermore, social skill styles can be taught through other methods such as the internet.

Individuals with challenges in relating and communicating, including those diagnosed with autism and other developmental disorders, have long been treated primarily with behavior management and skill development approaches. Dr. Stanley Greenspan's developmental, individual-difference, relationship-based (DIR/Floortime) approach to these challenges provides a comprehensive developmental model and effective intervention techniques, and is supported by a solid base of research. This approach helps parents to become a central part of the intervention work with their child, and provides professionals with meaningful ways to foster communication, emotional, and cognitive development in children at risk. The Second Punic War (218-201 BC), setting Rome against its rival state Carthage, is remembered because of the strategic maneuverings between Hannibal of Carthage and Scipio of Rome which would determine the master of the Mediterranean, laying the ground works for eventual plans for empire. Rome would eventually beat Carthage and historians since antiquity have tried to understand how Rome did so. Nigel Bagnall, in his book on the second Punic war describes the war in its entirety, making it a good overview.
