Intimate Partner Violence, Anxiety Diagnosis, And Binge Drinking Behavior Among College Students, David Kays Mar 2018

Intimate Partner Violence, Anxiety Diagnosis, And Binge Drinking Behavior Among College Students, David Kays

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Drinking behavior is common among students at colleges and universities, and binge drinking is particularly problematic due to its association with a variety of unwanted, negative experiences including anxiety (Thomas, Randall, Book, & Randall, 2008), unwanted intimate encounters (Lefkowitz, Waterman, Morgan, & Maggs, 2016) and intimate partner violence (IPV) (Rizo, 2015). The present study sought to determine if there were significant differences in college student drinking based on their experience of IPV, anxiety and its treatment. Archival data from the National College Health Assessment was used in this study. A randomly selected sample of 800 college students was analyzed. Results …

Spiritual Formation In The Graduate School Of Clinical Psychology At George Fox University, Rodger K. Bufford, Nancy S. Thurston, Kathleen Gathercoal, Marie-Christine Goodworth, Lynn H. Holt

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

At its inception, the training model in the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology (GSCP) at George Fox University was informed by the approach inaugurated at Fuller Theological Seminary School of Psychology in the 1960s. In the original model, training in Christian religion/spirituality and theology accompanied training in professional psychology. In the interim, our culture, psychological knowledge, perceived psychological needs, and training programs have changed greatly. Here we report changes in religion/spirituality (RIS) training and integration over the last two decades. We describe our current spiritual formation structure and process, and program evaluation efforts. Over the past several years the GSCP …

Wrestling For The Souls Of The Survivors: Helping Partners Who Are Married To Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, John N. Raymond Jan 2018

Wrestling For The Souls Of The Survivors: Helping Partners Who Are Married To Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, John N. Raymond

Doctor of Ministry

For some who partake in the wonders of marriage, the experiences of pleasant memories and successful challenges mark their dreams in their twilight years. For couples where one or both experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA), marital challenges have far greater negative effect on each of the marital partners—their twilight dreams may not be so pleasant. Although many couples experience setbacks and hardships, for the couple affected by CSA, the setbacks are experienced with greater intensity and duration. This dissertation will highlight research quantifying the negative long-term consequences of CSA. I also will give examples of qualitative research that describes the …

Meaning-Making As A Formational Pathway For Christian Adolescents, Timothy C. Prewette Apr 2017

Meaning-Making As A Formational Pathway For Christian Adolescents, Timothy C. Prewette

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation claims that Christian adolescents will flourish when using a narrative approach to both scripture and life as part of an intentional meaning-making process. Narrative theology offers the controlling story (worldview) needed by adolescents and aids in meaningfully framing life experiences. Chapter 1 identifies the problem of Christian adolescents abandoning the church and/or their faith as they move into young adulthood. Nuances of this exodus are explored, and a particular brand of adolescent faith is articulated, one which is lacking in both substance and relevance. Meaning-making is then characterized as an intentional, guided process in which Christians construct meaning …

Faithful Educators: Evangelism In Public Schools, Gary Sehorn Mar 2017

Faithful Educators: Evangelism In Public Schools, Gary Sehorn

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Evangelicals serving in public schools share a religious mandate with fellow Evangelicals to spread the gospel. That mandate must coexist with role-based professional obligations to students, staff, and the school community. In this paper, evangelizing in public schools by teachers and administrators is explored with emphasis given to evangelistic instincts rooted in religious socialization. Christian educators generally seek to offer a Christian witness within the boundaries of the law and there is evidence that most Evangelical educators avoid overt proselytizing, however counterexamples are plentiful. An analytical frame is proposed that describes common approaches to evangelism in public schools and points …

In The Way They Should Go: Nurturing The Relational And Spiritual Nature Of Children, Jamee Free

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation explores the innate relational and spiritual nature of children. This dissertation assumes that children are deeply relational and spiritual as part of the image of God within them. Chapter one takes a comprehensive look at how children are struggling within this country on every measure of health, as well as how relational nurture and soul care are significantly lacking. Chapter two explores Biblical materials, especially the incarnation, Jesus’ interactions with children, passages from Deuteronomy, verses from Proverbs, and examples of children in Biblical narratives. The third chapter focuses on historical and theological materials, as well as theories from …

Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Functioning For Transitional-Aged Youth With Autism, Tyson Dee William Payne Nov 2016

Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Functioning For Transitional-Aged Youth With Autism, Tyson Dee William Payne

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

There is mounting evidence to suggest that higher numbers of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are being identified, including a wide range of severity and outcome (Eaves & Ho, 2008). As identification of ASD has improved, there is a larger proportion of identified young adults with ASD (YA-ASD) in the transition to adulthood (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). Though exceptionally talented in many cases, a large proportion YA-ASD have difficulty establishing independence and navigating the complex social nuances of a workplace, many end up “homebound” with difficulty finding employment (Daley, Weisner, & Singhal, 2014; Shattuck, Wagner, Narendorf, …

Mother-To-Mother: Creating A Peer Mentor Program For Mothers In Homelessness, Taylor D. Hartman May 2016

Mother-To-Mother: Creating A Peer Mentor Program For Mothers In Homelessness, Taylor D. Hartman

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Mothers with children represent a growing segment of the homeless population. The American Psychological Association (APA) responded to the problem by initiating a task force in 2009 calling psychologists to step forward and enhance the treatment and services available for this population. However, providing treatment is often a challenge for this population because of the power differential and other barriers that negatively impact the potential relationship between mental health providers and the person living in homelessness (Hoffman & Coffey, 2008). The use of a peer mentor to mitigate the risk factors for a specific population has been an effective intervention …

Factors Correlating With Resilience In Bolivian Street Girls, Emily Wynsma May 2016

Factors Correlating With Resilience In Bolivian Street Girls, Emily Wynsma

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Resilience is defined as the ability to respond adaptively and maintain a high quality of life even after adversity or trauma. Research conducted in Western cultures has identified multiple factors that correlate with resilience for survivors of childhood trauma, including social support, the presence of a stable adult, internal locus of control, supportive spiritual beliefs and lack of self-blame regarding the trauma (Crenshaw, 2013; Brooks & Goldstein, 2004; Goldstein, Brooks, & Devries, 2013). This study explored whether the factors that previous research has identified as predictive of resilience have a similar predictive value when applied to another culture. This research …

Dissociation Differences Between Human-Made Trauma And Natural Disaster Trauma, Heather Merrell Jan 2013

Dissociation Differences Between Human-Made Trauma And Natural Disaster Trauma, Heather Merrell

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Contemporary psychiatric nosology defines dissociation as "a disturbance or alteration in the normally integrative functions of identity, memory, or consciousness" (Ruiz, Poythress, Lilienfeld, & Douglas, 2008; p. 511). Dissociation as a reaction to a traumatic event remains a controversial issue. This study explored for differences in the extent and forms of dissociation, intrusion, and avoidance in human-made trauma and natural disaster trauma. A total of 232 participants were drawn from 6 samples. Natural trauma was experienced by 2 groups in Haiti (earthquake), and one in Japan (tsunami). Human trauma was experienced by samples in India (abandonment, rejection/ostracism), Southern Sudan (civil …

If I Value Myself, I Value School: The Protective Effect Of Self-Esteem Among Abused Females, Kelly B.T. Chang, Diomaris E. Jurecska, Chloe E. Lee-Zorn, Joav Merrick

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Children who have been severely maltreated tend to perform significantly below their non-maltreated peers in standardized tests, earn lower grades and have the most discipline issues in the school setting. There is evidence that self-esteem (SE) may be a protective factor for youth with regard to negative emotional outcomes. The role of self-esteem needs to be explored further in more collectivistic cultures. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between physical abuse, SE and school attitudes. Participants included 14 females rescued from a city landfi ll in Nicaragua (ages 7 – 17 years, M = 12.44), half …

Is Touch Beyond Infancy Important For Children’S Mental Health?, Melody Whiddon, Marilyn J. Montgomery Jan 2011

Is Touch Beyond Infancy Important For Children’S Mental Health?, Melody Whiddon, Marilyn J. Montgomery

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Numerous studies from various fields have established that touch is vital to healthy adjustment during infancy and also during old age. Physiological research emphasizes the importance of touch to physical and psychological systems (Field, 2003). Attachment research emphasizes the importance of touch in the sensitive responsiveness and availability characteristic of the secure attachment style (Kassow & Dunst, 2004). Behavioral research emphasize the importance of contingent touch in reinforcement of infant behavior (Gewirtz & Pelaez- Nogueras, 2000). Recently, attention has been given to research examining touch in medical situations for elderly populations.

Theoretically, touch should remain important throughout the lifespan, but …

The Moral And Ethical Influence By The Christian Faith Community Upon The Non-Christian Population Of Harney County, Oregon, John D. Stauffer

Doctor of Ministry

The principal problem that this paper addresses is the diminishment of the Christian church‘s moral influence in Harney County, Oregon. The author asks two primary questions: (1) what are the role and the responsibility of the Christian faith community with respect to influencing the wider culture of Harney County, and (2) how should pastoral leaders of Harney County, Oregon facilitate collaborative efforts among their respective congregations to enhance the Christian faith‘s collective influence on our community.

Chapter One introduces the problem through a narrative based on the author‘s local ministry setting of Harney County. Chapter Two presents scriptural evidence to …

School Counseling Site Supervisor Training: An Exploratory Study, Lorraine Dekruyf, Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

This study explored the supervision training needs of site supervisors of master’s program school counseling interns via the construct of selfefficacy. Using the Site Supervisor Self-Efficacy Survey developed for this study, the authors surveyed school counseling site supervisors in the states of Oregon and Washington (N = 147) regarding their hours of supervision training and their supervisor self-efficacy. Results indicated that 54% of school counseling site supervisors had little or no counseling supervision training. Supervisor self-efficacy appeared to be relatively strong, consistently so for school counseling site supervisors with over 40 hours of supervision training. A partial correlation indicated a …

Developmental Assessment And Feedback Relieves Parenting Stress, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Melody A. Whiddon Jan 2010

Developmental Assessment And Feedback Relieves Parenting Stress, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Melody A. Whiddon

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Numerous studies have established that role stress experienced by parents has an impact on their perceptions of their child’s behavior, the quality of their parent-child interactions, and their child’s overall adjustment. Significant numbers of parents do experience the parenting role as stressful, often because they have concerns about whether their child’s behavior is within normal limits. Having seen parenting stress frequently while counseling parents and children, we reasoned that providing individualized developmental information to parents could reduce their parenting stress, and in turn result in positive consequences for parents and for children.

This article describes a brief intervention we developed, …
