The 'Desert' Society In Languedoc (1686-1704) As Popular Culture And The Roots Of French Quakerism, Jeanne H. Louis Oct 2014

The 'Desert' Society In Languedoc (1686-1704) As Popular Culture And The Roots Of French Quakerism, Jeanne H. Louis

Quaker Studies

The 'Desert' society in Cevennes, Languedoc, was an offshoot of the persecution of French Protestants by Louis XIV. The clandestine assemblies that met in the ravines gave rise to lay ministry, as the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) had forced professional ministers to flee abroad. At first, Predicants replaced ministers, then Prophets and Prophetesses in turn replaced the killed Predicants. The 'Desert' society gave birth to a popular culture. At the end of the seventeenth century, the Protestants' resistance was peaceful, but as persecutions grew, the Camisard war broke out in 1702. But a minority of Prophets refused …

“For The Relief Of Human Suffering”: The Methodist Committee For Overseas Relief In The Context Of Cold War Initiatives In Development, 1940–1968, Benjamin L. Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief (MCOR) was one of the first and largest denominational relief and development agencies in the nation from 1940 to 1968. Its ecumenical engagement was robust from the start; it was one of the largest donors to United China Relief, Church World Service, and other ecumenical overseas relief organizations during this time. This article provides a decade by decade assessment of MCOR’s work with particular attention to (1) its ecumenical engagement in relief and development efforts; (2) the relationship of MCOR’s work to the wider context of overseas relief and development efforts by nongovernmental, bilateral, …

Book Review: The Surprising Election And Confirmation Of King David, Roger S. Nam Jan 2013

Book Review: The Surprising Election And Confirmation Of King David, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "In this revised Th.D. dissertation (Harvard Divinity School, 2006), Randall Short challenges the interpretation of the History of David's Rise (1 Sam. 16-2 Sam. 5; hereafter = HDR) as political apology in the style of the "Hittite Apology of Hattusili." Instead, Short argues that both the wider literary context and individual elements support HDR as a testimony to the surprising and wondrous character of YHWH in the unlikely selection of David as his chosen one."

Book Review: The Yehud Stamp Impressions: A Corpus Of Inscribed Impressions From The Persian And Hellenistic Periods In Judah, Roger S. Nam

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "In the world of archaeology, excavators often parade their discoveries of grand architectural structures in hopes of attracting favorable publicity, volunteers, and, ultimately funding to support continued fieldwork. But what happens when, alongside these dramatic discoveries, excavation produces more mundane findings such as impressions on jars, often containing merely three letters: Hebrew yod, he, and dalet? In The Yehud Stamp Impressions: A Corpus of lnscribed Impressions from the Persian and Hellenistic Periods in Judah, Oded Lipschits and David s. Vanderhooft attempt to highlight the seemingly mundane as an opportune window to the social world of …

A Social Literary Study Of Hebrew Esther: Characterizations As A Narrative Construct For Discussing Diasporic Identity, Sara Vulgan

Seminary Masters Theses

This study is a preliminary attempt to ascertain insights into diasporic Persian/Second-Temple period ideas concerning Jewish identity. Through the book of Esther this study utilizes the methodological tool of literary characterizations as a means for gaining insight into the narrator's conceptual framework. The first section highlights some of the important recent Esther studies, along with studies concerned with sociological questions and the Hebrew bible. Section two presents a broad discussion of the sociological and literary concerns for this study. The third section presents a study on the characterizations of the story's co-protagonists, Esther and Mordecai. Two aspects of characterization, the …

This study is an historical dissertation on the topic of education reform in the East African nation of Rwanda. Determining the impact of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 on three reform initiatives that followed is the central aim of the study. The framework of the study is assembled as a three-‐part timeline upon which three initiatives of education reform are overlaid for analysis, 1) student-‐centered instruction, 2) language and 3) enrollment developments. Missiological Imagination As A Pedagogical Tool: African And Asian Christians In Conversion, Benjamin Hartley Jan 2011

Missiological Imagination As A Pedagogical Tool: African And Asian Christians In Conversion, Benjamin Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

This article provides an example of how mission history may be utilized in imaginative ways to promote student reflection about missiology. The article first presents biographical portraits of three Christian leaders from Africa and Asia in the late eighteenth century with respect to three missiological themes (migration, empire, and theology of evangelism). The second section of the essay is a fictitious and imaginative conversation among these three historical characters and me, the author, where questions are posed concerning these same themes. The article concludes with pedagogical reflections on the use of a similar exercise with students.

National Aeronautics And Space Administration (Nasa) Education 1993-2009, Christine M. Ivie

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was established in 1958 and began operating a formal education program in 1993. The purpose of this study was to analyze the education program from 1993 - 2009 by examining strategic plan documents produced by the NASA education office and interviewing NASA education officials who served during that time period. Constant changes in education leadership at NASA resulted in changes in direction in the education program and the documents produced by each administration reflected both small and some significant changes in program direction. The result of the analysis of documents and interview data was …

Perfection In Paul: Snapshot Of A Stand-Off, Kent Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Following a review of scholarship on ‘perfection’ in Pauline soteriology, this paper will document the current stand-off among Pauline scholars as to whether Paul requires (or thinks Jewish soteriology requires) perfect Law-keeping -- often connected with post-Sanders’ debates over 1st century Jewish soteriology. Along the way it will reflect on the meaning of perfection language in the various corpora. The paper will then suggest that resolving this issue remains crucial for unraveling Pauline soteriology.

Postmodern Trinitarian Philosophy: A Multiperspectival Approach, John Barry King Jr Aug 2008

Postmodern Trinitarian Philosophy: A Multiperspectival Approach, John Barry King Jr

Doctor of Ministry

To fulfill its missional imperative, the 21st Century, Western Church must engage a postmodem culture. To facilitate such engagement the following manuscript will relate Trinitarian theology to postmodem philosophy by using a Trinitarian grammar known as multiperspectivalism. In particular, multiperspectivalism will be used to integrate Trinitarian theology with the three loci of postmodem philosophy: non-foundational epistemology, socially constructive linguistics, and holistic relational ontology. As these various loci imply, postmodemism is characterized by a movement toward relationality in epistemology, linguistics, and ontology. It is precisely this emphasis on relationality that produces the resonance between postmodem philosophy and Trinitarian theology.

After outlining …

A Suffering Messiah? Messianic Expectations In Light Of The Dead Sea Scrolls: The Case Of 1qisa 52:14, Jenifer A. Manginelli Mar 2008

A Suffering Messiah? Messianic Expectations In Light Of The Dead Sea Scrolls: The Case Of 1qisa 52:14, Jenifer A. Manginelli

Doctor of Ministry

This paper considers the possibility of an intended messianic reading at Isaiah 52: 14 in the Great Isaiah Scroll (lQisaa) in light of the New Testament's presentation of Jesus as the suffering Messiah. Such a reading may evince a connection on the part of the scribe between the vicarious suffering of the servant of the LORD and a messianic figure. The plausibility of a messianic reading is considered through analysis of the text, followed by an exploration of the likelihood that such a connection would have been made on the basis of what we can discern of the Qumran community's …

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communications, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2008

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communications, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

Evangelicals face significant obstacles as they seek to make their publications accessible to potential readers. This study measures the extent to which evangelical scholarly journals have made their contents available in electronic form. Thirty-five journals – all active, refereed, evangelical in perspective, and published in English – were chosen for analysis. Two serials management tools and individual journal Web sites provided data regarding electronic accessibility. Twenty-six of the journals are available in some electronic form – most commonly in one or more aggregated databases. Evangelical information professionals could play a significant role in helping to make additional evangelical journal content …

Preach To Reach: Seven Characteristics Of Effective Evangelistic Preaching, Alan Ehler Mar 2007

Preach To Reach: Seven Characteristics Of Effective Evangelistic Preaching, Alan Ehler

Doctor of Ministry

Although studies continually show that Americans consider themselves spiritual, church attendance has continued to decline. A common reason people give for not attending church is that the sermons are boring and irrelevant. Far too few pastors effectively communicate in a way unchurched people understand, relate to and connect with in their sermons. In order to address this problem we will propose seven traits that characterize preaching that effectively reaches unbelievers and leads them to lasting faith in Jesus Christ: I) biblical, Christ-centered content, 2) relevant to unbelieving listeners, preached with 3) persuasive appeal, using 4) engaging illustrations and 5) dynamic …

A Relational Hermeneutic Toward Connective Ecclesial Leadership, Dwight Jason Friesen Mar 2005

A Relational Hermeneutic Toward Connective Ecclesial Leadership, Dwight Jason Friesen

Doctor of Ministry

The modern western church is experiencing a crisis of hermeneutic. The pervasive hermeneutic or interpretive lens employed by modern Christ-followers has engendered a largely static view of church structure and leadership. Simply put, the Western church fails to see relationally. This problem of "visual impairment" will be addressed by crafting a relational hermeneutic composed of three distinct and overlapping lenses: a theological/biblical (God) lens, a sociological/ontological (humanity) lens and a scientific/network (the cosmos) lens. Lens 1: God is social. For orthodox Christ-followers a relational hermeneutic begins with a God who is social; a Tri-unity of Divine persons, each lovingly serving …

A Correlational Study Of Anxiety Level, Spiritual Practices, And Spiritual Well-Being, Darren N. Janzen

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Research has indicated that anxiety is the most prevalent of all psychological disorders, affecting up to 30 million people in the United States at some point during their lives (Lepine, 2002). It has also been determined that anxiety may be a fairly stable trait that people experience. Some people are more likely to experiencing anxiety than others, and for those who are more likely it is also more difficult to stop having anxiety. Predictors of anxiety have been identified and include such items as: low self-esteem, ineffective social support, high education, low religiosity (Hovey & Magana, 2002), low vocational satisfaction …

Resources On The Historical Study Of Jesus, Dennis Ingolfsland

Jesus of Nazareth has been the center of significant media attention in recent years. Even before Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," Jesus had been the focus of featu re articles in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report. Jesus was also the subject of television documentaries by PBS, A&E, T LC, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and even a fu ll length prime time special by ABC News. Most presentations focus on Jesus as a man of history. In fact, the last 20 yea rs have been part of what scholars are now calling the "Third …

Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto

My object in this article is to share ways that my faith commitments are mamfest m my teaching of history It should be made clear from the outset that I currently teach, and have taught, at explicitly faith-based institutions—George Fox University and Dordt College—and this fact doubtless shapes what I have done m my classes, and how I have done it First, I will briefly summarize my understanding of history m terms of creational development and the exercise of human cultural formative power and its results Then I will share a few ways my pedagogy reflects this understanding or is …

A Critical Study On The Religious Economy Of The Korean Mission Field (1884 - 1910), Seonghan Kim Dec 2003

A Critical Study On The Religious Economy Of The Korean Mission Field (1884 - 1910), Seonghan Kim

Seminary Masters Theses

The church in Korea is well known for its rapid growth between 1960 and 1990, but remarkable church growth has been a part of Korean church history since the first missionaries arrived. This paper is the result of critical dialogue between the field of sociology and the study of religion. It applies the theory of religious economy to the Korean mission field during the period of 1884-1910. Religious economy is a sociological theory which has made unique and influential contributions to recent religious studies, especially in the United States. The theory attempts to explain the human side of religion based …
