On The Virgin Mary, Inclusive Ministry, ... And Christmas, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Hail, Favored One! The Lord is with you!" were the words announced to Mary by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:28). After regrouping from the shock of it, and after receiving support from her cousin, Elizabeth, Mary exclaimed, "My soul magnifies (and amplifies) the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God, my Savior!" (vv. 46-47) What if young Mary would have said "Nd' to God's plan to use her in His unfolding plan of salvation? Or, what if Joseph or Elizabeth would have discouraged her from following the Lord's leading in her life? Heaven and earth would be all …

On The Sovereignty Of Nations... And The Kingdom Of God, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Normally, the editor's essay comments upon some aspect of the magazine's central theme, but this issue is an exception. Given the crisis in the Persian Gulf, one cannot responsibly be silent about it. On the other hand, with virtually every branch of the media already commenting on the crisis around the clock, it's hard to say anything new ... that's still worth reading."

Prominent Themes In Evangelical Integration Literature, James D. Foster Jan 1990

Prominent Themes In Evangelical Integration Literature, James D. Foster

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The diversity of the integration literature is both a help and a hindrance in the task of integrating psychology and theology. While the range in approach and application reflects the creativity of the integrationists, this diversity can also lead to confusion and a lack of direction. In order to assess the state of integration, and to provide a focus for discussion, this article isolates prominent themes in the existing integration literature. The themes or assertions high- lighted are (a) modeling and imitation are effective ways to learn; (b) there is no one form of Christian counseling; (c) imagery is an …

A Theoretical And Empirical Examination Of The Construct Validity Of The Spiritual Leadership Qualities Inventory, Sophia A. Carr Jun 1986

A Theoretical And Empirical Examination Of The Construct Validity Of The Spiritual Leadership Qualities Inventory, Sophia A. Carr

Doctor of Education (EdD)

A new instrument, the Spiritual Leadership Qualities Inventory (SLQI), was developed by Wichern (1980) from Biblical constructs for the purpose of objectively measuring levels of spiritual maturity for leadership positions. The construct validity of the SLQI was examined psychologically by means of factor analysis and correlation with other indicators of spiritual maturity. Item level factor analysis of the SLQI indicates that between two to six factors best explains the variance of the SLQI. The resulting intuitive clusters of the factor analysis corresponded highly with a biblical study by E. J. Carr of the SLQI's underlying theoretical construct. Neither the factor …

Piaget And Parables Assimilated: A Response To Cole, James D. Foster, Glenn T. Moran Jan 1986

Piaget And Parables Assimilated: A Response To Cole, James D. Foster, Glenn T. Moran

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Dick T. Cole's critique of our integration of Piagetian learning theory and Christ's parabolic method focuses on two primary concerns. The first concern is that the Bible should not be used as data, and the second that current psychological concepts cannot be meaningfully related to biblical times. In response to these concerns it is argued that the parables are recorded lessons and not theological concepts as Cole suggests, that the underlying structure of biblical lessons is relevant to modem learning theory, and that cultural specificity does not hinder the learning process but rather is an essential part of it.

Philippians: Paul's Handbook On Conflict Management, Mark Kelley

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Much of my life has been devoted to bringing together people and concepts which did not seem to belong together. In my high school days, I delighted in hosting parties to which I intentionally invited students from very different social groups. As a pastor, I have worked hard to bring the various cliques of small churches together in a sense of: unity. As a seminary student, I have striven to combine the highest academic standards with a concern for the relevance of each academic activity to the every-day pastorate.

This thesis is a further step towards developing a minstry of …
