Gardner-Webb University President William Downs has appointed Neal Payne as interim vice president for Christian Life and Service, effective Aug. 1. Payne presently serves as associate minister for Student Ministries. He succeeds Tracy Jessup, who will retire at the end of July, after 30 years of service to the University.

Court Greene, of Canton, N.C., and his fraternal twin, Zachary, shared the same birthday and a special bond, but they were different in every other way. Court is a pastor and alumnus of Gardner-Webb University; while Zach faced many unforeseen hardships, taking his life down a much darker path. When Zach took his own life in 2019 at the age of 38, Court was thrown into turmoil and began a journey to find his way through the hurt and anguish.

Since December 2021, the Facilities and Maintenance staff has worked to significantly transform the third floor of Gardner-Webb University’s John R. Dover Library. The floor recently opened to the delight and surprise of students. “They do love the space,” observed Dean of the Library Pam Dennis. “The looks on their faces when they get to the top of the steps is priceless!”

She was 9 years old when she accepted Jesus as her Savior and Lord. She promised to follow Him, even when His directions didn’t make sense.

The 10th annual Ethics Bowl, sponsored by North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, was a virtual event this year, held via Zoom. The team from Gardner-Webb University was one of 16 to participate in the recent event. Because of the online format, the event was not a competition. Teams were asked to present their positions on two cases, which explored ethical issues relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the presentations were not judged, guests who had previously served as judges provided feedback to the teams.

The premise of this thesis is to explore the reception of the Hagar stories through three prominent early Christian thinkers -Origen, John Chrysostom, and Augustine of Hippo - in order to evaluate the theological significance she had for those particular contexts. Hagar functions predominately as a symbol in contexts where group identity, power, and ideology are contested. The hermeneutical and theological stances of the authors are examined to expose and mitigate the religious conflict occurring in their historical location. In this narrative, the apocalyptic rule of God, Jesus, and other literary elements of the narrative then come together in a particular way within Mark 13 to shock the readers. In his 25 years of service to the U.S. Naval Reserves, Rear Adm. Terry Eddinger, Deputy Chief of Chaplains for Reserve Matters, has held at least nine other titles. The 1988 alumnus of Gardner-Webb University was an Old Testament professor and college administrator for 19 years, and is a humanitarian assistance advisor, archaeologist, certified master diver, runner, speaker, author and volunteer.

While reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “The Cost of Discipleship,” Hannah O’Brien, ’20, became intrigued. How could theologian and pastor Bonhoeffer, who many considered a pacifist, participate in a plan to assassinate Hitler? She received an Undergraduate Research Scholars grant from Gardner-Webb University to conduct a theological investigation of the ethics of Bonhoeffer’s plot.

A group of 26 high school students, from 26 different schools in six states, recently spent a week on the campus of Gardner-Webb University previewing college life. As participants in The Honors Experience, the teenagers were introduced to dorm living and eating in the cafeteria, attended credit-bearing college courses, and completed service projects. This year’s group is the largest one to attend since the program began three years ago.

Isaac Tuttle, ’20, of Lenoir, N.C., enhanced his college experience by participating in the Gardner-Webb University Honors Program. He earned his degrees in history, and philosophy and theology. Recently, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, Tuttle and other Honors students presented their research in a Zoom teleconference. In the fall, Tuttle plans to attend the University of Alabama’s graduate school in history.

Annie Deaton realized her call to youth ministry as a senior in high school. After choosing to attend Gardner-Webb University, she learned that the Accelerated Pastoral Ministries Program (APMP) would allow her to answer her calling in less time than traditional programs, which generally take seven years to complete. Launched in 2016 at Gardner-Webb, the APMP provides students who are called to serve as pastors with both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in five years of study.

This presentation is an overview of my research during the 2019 Summer Scholars program. My goal is to provide a few examples of the failure to conflate church and state throughout history while also giving theological insight from the Bible. Ultimately, my goal is to put forth a strong argument for the separation of church and state that can be accepted and supported by Christians.
