The Gardner-Webb University GOAL (Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners) program will conduct open house events at various satellite locations across North Carolina over the next several weeks. The information sessions are offered to potential and current students who would like to continue their college education and earn a degree. The Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity will present a unique lecture on religious liberty and church-state separation as part of the annual C.O. and Eliza Greene Endowed Lectureship series, on March 25 from 9:15 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Stewart Hall of Tucker Student Center. Dr. J. Brent Walker, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee, will serve as the keynote speaker for the event. Walker is the executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC) in Washington, D.C.

Select Gardner-Webb University students are in their final stages of preparation for the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. Last year in the inaugural competition, the group placed third out of 14 participating schools, which included Mars Hill, Wake Forest and Wingate. This year’s event is to be held at Campbell Law School in Raleigh, N.C. on Feb. 8 and 9.

Gardner-Webb University is pleased to announce that Dr. Jeff Rogers has been named Dean of the Gayle Bolt Price School of Graduate Studies. Rogers’ relationship with GWU began in 2004 when he was invited by the University to speak at its annual faculty retreat. Following that event, doors opened and opportunities grew at GWU for Rogers.

Four Gardner-Webb students embraced the call of evangelism this summer as they worked with a group of Christian camps whose mission is to share Christ with children from various backgrounds and traditions. Mark Baker, Amy Brown, Chelsea Hearne and Zeke Stephenson were part of Passport Missions and their camps for children and youth from third through 12th grade. Founded in 1993, Passport, Inc. (based in Birmingham, Ala.) has developed a reputation for creative, high-quality Christian programs for students.

After a seven-month process, a group of Gardner-Webb students will see their hard work pay off on April 28 when Atlantic Records recording artists NEEDTOBREATHE perform in the Paul Porter Arena at 8 p.m. In the fall of 2011, a group of more than 40 students, led by senior Jessica Greer, started a campaign to persuade NEEDTOBREATHE to perform at Gardner-Webb University. The “Operation NEEDTOBREATHE” group, as they were called around campus, used a variety of social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to send messages directly to the band.

Ten students, one faculty advisor, and a certain canine companion represented Gardner-Webb University at the recent super-regional convention of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society. Each student presented original research, and two were named either a winner or an alternate for prestigious national scholarships. The puppy, a leader dog in training named Tucker, enjoyed the singular distinction of being the conference’s only canine participant.

Registration is now open for Gardner-Webb’s 2012 Pastors’ School, a three-day educational retreat for pastors and students of ministry and theology, May 28-30 at GWU. Dr. Walter Brueggemann, distinguished Old Testament scholar and author of more than 50 books and Bible commentaries, will serve as guest keynote speaker, along with Dr. Jim McConnell, professor of New Testament interpretation at GWU. Brueggemann and McConnell will address the theme, “Out of Babylon: The People of God and Empire from both the Old and New Testament Perspectives.”

It has been a challenging week for many friends and family members of Ariane Patterson. The Gardner-Webb religious studies major was celebrating her 21st birthday on Jan. 17 when she collapsed in class, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Her friends say she had an “outrageous love for Christ and people,” and that “her beautiful smile was as infectious as her loving spirit.”

When Gardner-Webb’s current Missionary in Residence, Mike Boone, first sensed a call to ministry, it never occurred to him that he could be something other than a preacher. “I wish someone had told me to sit down and ask myself, ‘What do I like to do?’,” Boone says. ” I’ve always loved working outside, working with plants. The dream of leaving high school and entering college came true for nine local students thanks to the Joseph B. Freeman Jr. Educational Fund. The Freeman Fund is a scholarship fund formed by area business leaders 20 years ago to provide financial assistance to high school students from Cleveland County schools. The fund is designed for students who qualify academically for college but whose unique situations might otherwise prevent them from attending.

According to its website, the NABPR is a community of teaching scholars who meet to sharpen teaching skills and encourage the continuation of meaningful scholarship in the fields of religious studies. While most members teach or study at Baptist-affiliated schools, colleges, and seminaries, many members come from a wide range of church-related and state-supported schools in the United States, Canada, and abroad. According to Dr. Ron Williams, president of NABPR and professor of religious studies at Gardner-Webb, the annual meeting offers networking and career development opportunities for current professors and graduate students entering the field.

The goal of this thesis was to appropriate the image of Yahweh as father for modern Christendom in light of feminist critiques of the image. The methods in accomplishing this task were as follows: defining feminism and feminist biblical interpretation, conveying the critiques of Rosemary Radford Ruether and Julia M. O'Brien who were scholarly dialogue partners, studying the social milieu of ancient Israel, using historical, literary, textual, and social criticism to exegete texts that mention Yahweh as father, comparing findings of exegesis with social milieu of ancient Israel, responding to critiques of Ruether and O'Brien, and lastly taking the findings …
