The Filipino Sign Language Act In The Philippines: Policy Analysis, Angela Rogers May 2020

The Filipino Sign Language Act In The Philippines: Policy Analysis, Angela Rogers

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Passed in 2018, the Filipino Sign Language Act provides full access for Deaf Filipinos in the Philippines and fully recognizes the Filipino Sign Language as a national sign language for the Deaf. This benefits analysis identifies objectives concerning all areas of public life--such as medicine, education, civic and government affairs, employment, television news access, and other media access--and compares this broad law to the narrowly focused preceding policy, Republic Act no. 10905. The law contains an implementation timeline and requires reporting; yet, evidence shows some implementations but no reporting. To explore these findings, interviews were conducted with two Filipinos at …

Investigating Birth Outcomes Among Deaf Mothers: Hospital Vs. Home Births, Aashni Kamra May 2020

Investigating Birth Outcomes Among Deaf Mothers: Hospital Vs. Home Births, Aashni Kamra

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This study examined birth outcomes among Deaf mothers who have given birth in a hospital setting versus a home setting. Deaf individuals are often marginalized in healthcare due to lack of accessibility, and therefore, the right to make their own informed decisions. This marginalization leads to inequality in health care, and oftentimes individuals within the Deaf community, with added intersectionalities, face even more discrimination. Deaf women face more health disparities in comparison to hearing women due to a variety of factors which include; lack of accessibility, medical professionals’ lack of cultural competency, and lack of inclusion in their healthcare decisions. …

Vaccine Literacy Among Deaf Adult American Sign Language Users Of Hearing Parents, Casey Lee Peck May 2020

Vaccine Literacy Among Deaf Adult American Sign Language Users Of Hearing Parents, Casey Lee Peck

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Background: Communication barriers, the lack of proficiency in English, and poor communication with medical providers affect some Deaf people negatively in terms of health literacy. One contemporary controversial health literacy issue affecting Deaf people concerns vaccines. According to the literature, parents with higher health literacy are less likely to vaccinate their children as opposed to those parents with low health literacy (Veldwijk, van der Heide, Rademakers, Schuit, de Wit, Uiters & Lambooij 2015). Studies have shown that the majority of the deaf population have relatively low health literacy; however, vaccine literacy in the deaf population has not been investigated. Research …

Linguistic Barriers In Mathematics Word Problems For Deaf Students, Stefania Sarkic May 2020

Linguistic Barriers In Mathematics Word Problems For Deaf Students, Stefania Sarkic

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Many teacher preparation programs provide insufficient problem-solving skills training, and deaf students whose primary language is ASL encounter linguistic barriers when answering mathematics word problems. Research suggests that deaf students do not fully develop their critical thinking skills due to the linguistic barriers in mathematical word problems. This project investigates whether the use of ASL in mathematical word problems effectively gives another approach, more visual-based, to solving word problems and thereby helps deaf students develop critical thinking skills. A survey of 28 deaf students in developmental mathematics courses included three-word problems, one asked in English only, a second in ASL …

An Analysis Of Emerging Technology's Impact On Accounting: Creating A Brand - Accountable - To Update Professionals In The Field, Patricia Brynn Schmidt May 2020

An Analysis Of Emerging Technology's Impact On Accounting: Creating A Brand - Accountable - To Update Professionals In The Field, Patricia Brynn Schmidt

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

It is an extremely exciting time for the accounting profession in terms of possibility. Many emerging technologies and innovations are set to disrupt our current paradigm. With new technology, our roles and responsibilities will shift. Some speculate certain technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, will result in the obsolescence of the accounting career. While it is true the field we know today will change, it will not dissolve completely. The dissemination of pertinent information about these changes must be extensive, timely, and accessible so accounting firms and professionals can adapt to the changes to stay relevant. My project …

An Exploration Of Kinesics In Black American Sign Language, Micayla Ann Whitmer Dec 2019

An Exploration Of Kinesics In Black American Sign Language, Micayla Ann Whitmer

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

The relationship between kinesics, a sub-field of linguistics which focuses on the intersection of expressive language and nonverbal communication, and African American Vernacular English (AAVE) or Ebonics has been studied extensively; however, the existence of kinesics in Black ASL has not been studied. This study found that kinesics does in fact occur in Black ASL. In addition, this paper points out that although Black ASL has been compared with traditional or white ASL, Black ASL has yet to be extensively compared with AAVE. Data came from raw video footage collected during the Black ASL project and is available for public …

Experiences Of Mainstream Students: A Qualitative Study, Raelyn Fuechtmann Dec 2019

Experiences Of Mainstream Students: A Qualitative Study, Raelyn Fuechtmann

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

The experiences a student has in school influences the development of identity, self-worth, and perspective of the world into adulthood. There are numerous barriers to retaining clear access to information with ease in conventional educational settings such as public education; especially for those with hearing loss. Mainstream settings, where deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) students are often the only one with hearing loss in the school, coupled with the journey of discovering their identity, can take a toll on D/HH students. This qualitative study observes and analyzes the formative experiences of D/HH students navigating their personal mainstream educational settings. Five interviews …

Implementation Of Group Based Cryptosystems In Information Security, Bailey J. Moers May 2019

Implementation Of Group Based Cryptosystems In Information Security, Bailey J. Moers

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This capstone will focus on the implementation of cryptography in information security. The implementation can be achieved by studying different cryptosystems that will be secured using group based mathematics. Group based cryptosystems are preferable because research shows that group based cryptosystems are computationally infeasible. Understanding group based mathematics and its implementation in cryptography will allow us to better study the NTRU (Nth Truncated Ring Unit) cryptosystem with previous knowledge of group based cryptosystems. Although this cryptosystem is still very new, two sections of NTRU cryptosystem will be implemented in information security. The selected sections are: Multiplication of Polynomials modulo p …

Barriers To Job Satisfaction Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Employees: Implications For Creating Deaf-Friendly Work Environments, Yunhe Bai May 2019

Barriers To Job Satisfaction Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Employees: Implications For Creating Deaf-Friendly Work Environments, Yunhe Bai

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Employment has long been a serious, far-reaching social problem within the deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) population. To unearth potential issues that contribute to such a problem, I conducted an honors capstone research on barriers to job satisfaction of D/HH employees, in which job satisfaction is a direct evaluation method of the relationship between nature of organizational structures and expectations that employees have of their work. Using a qualitative design with a review of existing literature, semi-structured interviews of 11 participants, a data transcription of American Sign Language interviews into English, and an interpretive analysis of interview discoveries, I …

Interactive Health Literacy: Gender Differences In A Representative Deaf College Student Sample, Gabrielle Humlicek May 2019

Interactive Health Literacy: Gender Differences In A Representative Deaf College Student Sample, Gabrielle Humlicek

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

For some deaf people who experience communication and/or language barriers, health literacy is impacted. This capstone project focuses on interactive health literacy, which refers to an individual’s ability to extract health information through communication (e.g. Internet; family/friends; doctors) and apply this information towards self-care (Nutbeam, 2000). Research suggests that gender role influences a person’s interactive health literacy in the general population, but this effect has not been investigated in the deaf and hard-of-hearing population. This capstone project aims to examine whether gender disparity exists for interactive health literacy in a pilot sample of deaf and hard of hearing college students. …

The Challenges Of The Itinerant Teacher Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing: The Inside Story, Hannah Rae Neild May 2019

The Challenges Of The Itinerant Teacher Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing: The Inside Story, Hannah Rae Neild

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Over the course of the history of the United States history, there has been a drastic shift from an exclusive education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to a more inclusive approach. Through the change to an inclusive setting, students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing often have an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Itinerant TODHH) that works as their advocate and support system throughout their mainstream experiences. The role of the Itinerant TODHH is constantly evolving and adapting which led to this study to investigate the perspectives of Itinerant TODHH on the challenges …

Baggage: An Original Script And Production Furthering The Evolution Of Deaf Theatre, Nikolya Sereda May 2019

Baggage: An Original Script And Production Furthering The Evolution Of Deaf Theatre, Nikolya Sereda

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

As an homage to the musical RENT, I wrote and directed an original play entitled Baggage, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story, that was produced for the Gallaudet University Theatre Department’s spring 2019 production. Baggage follows three Deaf teenagers, Michaela, Gage, and Isabel, who connect through the music of RENT, as they find themselves entangled which ultimately ends in a falling out. The play also shows the experience of growing up in a hearing family as Michaela, Gage, and Isabel face frustration, underestimation, and neglect in their families. To spotlight the multifaceted ways of experiencing deafness, three songs from RENT were incorporated …

Objective: This paper investigates the role of peer support in food security among deaf college students. Participants: The sample included 166 college students who took the survey between May and October 2017. Methods: Participants completed a bilingual online survey in ASL and English. This survey included questions about peer support, the USDA’s 6-item food security module, and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Out of 166 students (mean age=23; SD=6), 60.7% were food secure. About 26.4% (n= 43) were at-risk for food insecurity and another 12.9% (n=21) had very low food security. The sample included respondents who identified as people of color (54%) …

Three Personality Traits Of Deaf Scientists: Openness, Extraversion, And - Uniquely - Agreeableness, Megan Majocha May 2018

Three Personality Traits Of Deaf Scientists: Openness, Extraversion, And - Uniquely - Agreeableness, Megan Majocha

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

A common observation in higher education is that most deaf undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) do not continue on to STEM careers. A smaller pool of deaf individuals persists in STEM and succeed in becoming scientists. Various reasons may explain this observation, one of which may involve personality traits. Certain personality traits have been found in scientists in the general population that differ from the general population: scientists have greater extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness on the Big Five Inventory (BFI) However, no study has focused on personality traits in deaf scientists. This study sought to …

Staging Medea For D/Deaf Audiences In The 21st Century: Strategic Adaptation, Translation, And Production Approaches To Greek Theatre, Casey Johnson-Pasqua May 2018

Staging Medea For D/Deaf Audiences In The 21st Century: Strategic Adaptation, Translation, And Production Approaches To Greek Theatre, Casey Johnson-Pasqua

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Greek theatre and Deaf theatre are two forms of theatre that are on the opposite ends of a sensory spectrum. Greek theatre is auditory-based with an acoustically designed stage, seating twenty-five thousand. With two to three actors on the stage, movements are minimal, and masks are used to portray numerous characters. Visually based Deaf theatre uses movement through facial expression, body language, and American Sign Language. Because of this sharp contrast, there has been hesitancy in taking on a Greek play in Deaf theatre. Gallaudet University’s Theatre and Dance program has not produced an ancient Greek tragedy since Ethan Sinnott’s …

This study aims at describing correlations and regressions between police legitimacy and the identified significant factors (Perceived Police’s Compliance with the Law, Procedural Justice, Police Effectiveness, Moral Credibility, and Cooperation with the Police) which may determine legitimacy of the police. The imperative questions that this study seeks to address are: (1) …

The Neural Substrates Of Communicative Actions: A Cognitive Psychophysiology Study Of Sign Language Production And Imitation In Deaf Signers And Hearing Non-Signers, Athena S. Willis May 2018

The Neural Substrates Of Communicative Actions: A Cognitive Psychophysiology Study Of Sign Language Production And Imitation In Deaf Signers And Hearing Non-Signers, Athena S. Willis

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

What is the neurobiological underpinning of communicative actions? Studies have suggested that the same neural network of imitation is involved in producing communicative actions, regardless if the persons expressing communicative actions are deaf signers or hearing nonsigners. Through neuroimaging method and analysis, we can observe if experience with communicative actions leads to any differences in the neural processing of the one and two handed ASL signs in deaf signers and hearing non-signers. The results indicate that the posterior right parietal region of the brain shows a significant difference in activity during imitation of one handed and two handed ASL signs …

Intersectional Experiences: White And Black Deaf Lesbians In Metro Dc 1980 - 2000, Paige E. Watson

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

This study looks at the experiences of two groups with intersecting identities: white and Black Deaf lesbians who lived in Washington, DC from the 1980s to the early 2000s, a transformative period for lesbians. During the 1980s, the larger LGBT community united as one to push for recognition. The 1990s brought the lesbian feminist movement, and with it attention towards classism and sexism within the LGBT movement. During this period, the focus of the lesbian community shifted from a white and middle-class movement to a more inclusive one. However, even with this attention and the eventual fracturing of the LGBT …

Improving Deaf Citizens' Participation In The American Electoral Process, Jehanne Mccullough Jul 2017

Improving Deaf Citizens' Participation In The American Electoral Process, Jehanne Mccullough

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Improving Deaf people’s participation in politics involved a service-learning project with three activities. First, the Deaf People for Hillary campaign focused on maintaining nationwide social media platforms; increasing Deaf representation in the Hillary for America (HFA) campaign and its disability community taskforce; and testing get-out-the-vote (GOTV) strategies among Deaf people in the Nevada primary. Second, an internship with the HFA campaign at the national headquarters included a first in campaign and political party history: an American Sign Language (ASL) voter assistance videophone hotline operated by volunteers to serve all voters regardless of party. Third, a post-election survey of Deaf non-voters …

The Replacement Of Network Switches, Sean Fenton May 2017

The Replacement Of Network Switches, Sean Fenton

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Networking equipment often has to be replaced every few years in order to keep up with network speed demands and bandwidth, as well as the expiration of equipment. Gallaudet’s network switches were approaching their End of Life (EoL) and the Gallaudet networking team decided to replace the networking equipment to improve the network efficiency at Gallaudet. After much research and debate, the decision was made to replace current Cisco networking equipment with Juniper in order to optimize the network speed for Internet traffic. Cisco and Juniper are competing brands for a wide range of networking equipment. The capstone project is …

Deaf Students Navigating The Rhetorical And Grammar Demands Of College Essay Writing, Thyra Wood May 2017

Deaf Students Navigating The Rhetorical And Grammar Demands Of College Essay Writing, Thyra Wood

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Today’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing college students have had a myriad of sociolinguistic experiences and come from a variety of linguistic backgrounds. Like other English Language Learners (ELLs), it is quite common for many of them to have difficulties with the writing demands of their college classes. What we know about Deaf students’ writing from previous studies has largely focused on grammar errors alone. Three of these studies examine the grammar and syntax errors of Deaf college students’ writing: Goldberg (1986); Sayers & Channon (2007); and Berent et al. (2008). All of these studies occurred, it could be suggested, …

The Impact Of Stereotype Threat On Deaf Individuals, Jessica Kales May 2017

The Impact Of Stereotype Threat On Deaf Individuals, Jessica Kales

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Misconceptions and stereotypes about Deaf people’s verbal intelligence may lead to a social phenomenon known as stereotype threat. When a person is conscious of a stereotype about their group, they may experience stereotype threat, whereby apprehension related to a negative stereotype undermines performance (Steele, 2010). Participants for the study were 27 Deaf undergraduate students. Participants were randomly assigned to high threat or low threat conditions. Regardless of the condition, all participants were then asked to solve seven anagrams and five questions from the verbal portion of the Graduate Record Exam. Participants were asked to evaluate their performance on the anagrams …

Gifts Of Character: A Father's Love Letter From His Hearing And Deaf Childhood, B. Mutisya Nzyuko

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Using the power of the written word in a kind, loving, and inspirational manner, the author shares his childhood journey in personal essays to his children, from which they can draw inspiration, find instruction, get answers to some of their questions about life, and map their own destinies with a better understanding of their father’s struggles and victories. As a story from a specific period of the author’s life, Gifts of Character is a memoir, a story from a life, unlike an autobiography, which is the story of a life. The author recalls events and conversations, not verbatim, but from …

Substance Abuse Recovery Through The Eyes Of The Therapist, Taylor Wardle May 2017

Substance Abuse Recovery Through The Eyes Of The Therapist, Taylor Wardle

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Recognizing the attitudes and activities of therapists working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients is necessary in order to address any gaps in training. Twenty-nine therapists were recruited from all over the United States to take part in an online survey asking about their attitudes towards addiction, Deaf people, and training. The hearing status of the 29 participants were self-identified as Hearing (n=16), Deaf (n=10), and Hard of Hearing (n=3). Of the 29 therapists, 11 had training specific towards substance abuse, Hearing (n=4), Deaf (n= 6), and Hard of Hearing (n= 1). These 29 therapists were presented with three …

Female Circumcision: Attitudes, Knowledge And Beliefs Within The Deaf Community, Morgane Vincent May 2017

Female Circumcision: Attitudes, Knowledge And Beliefs Within The Deaf Community, Morgane Vincent

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Female Genital Circumcision (FGC) is a cultural practice by which female genitalia are cut for non-medical purposes. Although the Western world has seen the number of circumcised youth rise, very few studies have been conducted in developed countries. Even fewer are studies on minority groups regarding female circumcision; none explicitly involve deaf people. For this study, 76 deaf or hard of hearing individuals living in the U.S., whose primary means of communication was English or American Sign Language, completed a survey about FGC before and after viewing videos. One video showed an African woman who had experienced FGC, and the …
