The Sojourner Experience: An Exploration Of Identity Transformation Through Communication, Valerie Biwa
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This exploratory research focuses on the relationship between communication and identity transformation in the sojourner experience. It inquires the following: RQ1: How does communication affect the identity transformation process of sojourners? RQ2: How does identity transformation affect the way sojourners communicate? Ten participants from six countries were interviewed in a forty (40) minute interview session. A qualitative methodology with an open-minded exploratory approach using semi-structured questions to guide the interview was employed. A grounded-in-data coding and Owen’s criteria for identifying themes (Owen, 1984) was used to identify emerging themes and overlapping narratives. The study revealed five themes from the “living …

Discovering The Virtual Fingerprint: Analyzing Embodiment, Immersion, And Player Personality In Video Games, Benjamin C. Bower
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis set out to explore embodiment, immersion, and personalities in massively multiplayer video games (MMOGs), in particular how players become immersed in a virtual world. Immersion is a focal point in the gaming experience in which players communicate directly with the digital medium. Scholarship has argued that games have specific immersive qualities that draw players into them including storytelling, social and emotional reasoning, among others (Calleja, 2011). Each player has a particular preference as to what immerses them the most in a game. In addition, research has concluded that gamers have unique personalities that they portray while they embody …

The Vaccine And The Virus: An Autoethnographic Account Of Hpv, Sex Education, And The Psychosocial Effects Of Sti's, Jamie L. Morgan
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In 2006 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Gardasil vaccine to assist in the protection from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV): The leading contributor to cervical cancer. After stressing the importance of the vaccine, but disregarding its inadequacies, young women were subjected to invasive and excessive protocols. This study utilizes autoethnographic methods to understand the psychological and social effects of the individuals who were diagnosed with HPV before the release of the Gardasil 9 vaccine in 2014 and forced to go through these unnecessary procedures before the medical field began adopting imperative changes to treatment.

Reel Women: Gender Stereotypes In Film, Kayla Marie Krahn
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Horror films portray female characters as sexual, helpless victims. When horror films attempt to portray female characters as the hero, this sends a message to audiences that women can be strong and independent. An experiment was conducted to test an audience's perceptions gender stereotypes of women in the horror film, Scream. Results indicate that stereotypes present in the horror film effected the participants' perception of women as competent heroes. Female participants were also more likely to perceive women as more competent than male participants. Then, from a qualitative standpoint, five individuals were interviewed about their perceptions of characters in their …
