Facilitative Conditions For Transformative Learning, Devika Dibya Choudhuri
Facilitative Conditions For Transformative Learning, Devika Dibya Choudhuri
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU
Teaching multicultural counseling is challenging work. In order for students to learn course material, the instructor must often send them through a process of unlearning what they previously thought they knew in an effort to have them question their assumptions and form a deeper understanding of social identity. As Dibya Choudhuri notes, this can potentially lead to transformative experiences for students, as they begin to see the world much differently than they previously had. Dibya expertly uses the theory of transformative learning to shed light on what is happening in her class as her students go through this experience. Dibya …
Let's Have A Party: Information Literacy Instruction As An Empowerment Strategy, Shahla Bahavar, Angela Boyd, Valeria Molteni, Sophie Lesinska
Let's Have A Party: Information Literacy Instruction As An Empowerment Strategy, Shahla Bahavar, Angela Boyd, Valeria Molteni, Sophie Lesinska
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
Is it a crazy idea or an innovative pedagogical strategy to turn an information literacy instruction (ILI) session into a party? Joy Kim, Curator of the Korean Heritage Library at the University of Southern California, implements this approach every semester to welcome Korean students to USC campus. Considering the success of her program, perhaps more instruction librarians should take time to organize information literacy welcome parties.
International and minority students experience more alienation on campus than average students. Effective ILI often minimizes this sense of alienation felt by these two groups. International students find services available in American libraries are …
Discovering Buried Treasure: Teaching Strategies For The Aging Population, Susan Frey, Juliet Kerico
Discovering Buried Treasure: Teaching Strategies For The Aging Population, Susan Frey, Juliet Kerico
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
Traditionally community engagement for academic libraries translates as outreach to the academic community. But what are the possibilities when an academic library extends outreach to people not normally defined as university stakeholders? At Indiana State University (ISU), we learned that extending outreach to an untapped population can reap unexpected gains. For the past two years ISU instruction librarians have traveled to a local retirement community to teach computer skills as part of ISU’s Bites & Bytes program. The initial goal of the program was to benefit the community-at-large by providing these adult learners with therapeutic activity and a social outlet. …

Stereotypes: Racism And Its Effects On The 2008 Presidential Election And Our Citizens, Mark Anthony Wheeler
Stereotypes: Racism And Its Effects On The 2008 Presidential Election And Our Citizens, Mark Anthony Wheeler
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This is such a historic time in our country’s story, due to the reprieve from the usual choice of middle-aged White males in a presidential election. The make-up of candidates’ age, race, and sex in the 2008 primaries and general election, allowed the unique opportunity for multiple stereotypes to be engaged. This was an exploratory qualitative study, relying on descriptive data, participant observation during the general election campaign, and in-depth interviews (N=8) that happened within six months after the election of Barack H. Obama, first African-American elected president of the United States. The purpose of this study is to examine …
Multiple Role Transitions, Lena E. Ballard
Multiple Role Transitions, Lena E. Ballard
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Previous research has not addressed multiple role transitions for women; this is the purpose of this study. Women spend their days juggling multiple roles trying to do it all. Historically women’s roles have been that of housewife and mother. No longer is the women’s place only in the home. This research builds on the author’s earlier semi-structured qualitative research inquiry, finding that many women try to do it all even when they know they are suffering physically, mentally and spiritually (Addendum A). My present work, which is heuristic in nature, discusses what I discovered during a year of journaling. The …
The Invisiblity Of White Privilege, Michael T. King
The Invisiblity Of White Privilege, Michael T. King
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
People in our society can go through life without knowing about white privilege or realizing they themselves, may have this privilege. The white or lighter skin color of a person has automatic benefits, right from birth, them not ever having to do anything to attain this privilege. The consequences are mostly good and outweigh the bad, for the ones that have white privilege. However, skin that is not white has far more injustices, they are oppressed and they are the ones that suffer, not having this same privilege. This study will recognize awareness, barriers, and successful ways to treat people …
