Masters Theses
This study was one of comparison of chemical variant of the Cladonia pyxidata-chlorophaea complex of east-central Illinois and northern Michigan. A total of 150 collections were made from Coles, Clark, and Lawrence counties in Illinois, and a separate collection of 58 samples was taken from Cheboygan and Emmet counties in Michigan.
Collection sites in Clark county were, Rocky Branch Nature Preserve, near Clarksville, and privately owned land near Martinsville. From Coles county, collections were made at the Stone Quarry Prairie, Lakeview Park, Lincoln Log Cabin State Park, Walker’s Ford, Lakeview Park hill prairie, and a hill prairie north of the …
The Photograph And Superrealism, Christopher Stokes
The Photograph And Superrealism, Christopher Stokes
Masters Theses
In 1968 an exhibition entitled "Realism Now" was held at Vassar College under the direction of Linda Nochlin, a noted art historian and professor at the school. The exhibition sought to present a cross-view of recent American painting in the realistic mode. Included in the catalog were twenty-five artists including Jack Beal, Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Alex Katz, Alfred Leslie, Malcom Morely and Philip Pearlstein, as well as many other artists who, at the time, were relatively unknown. The exhibition generated a great deal of attention, not only because of its recognition of contemporary representational painting as an influential movement, …
Diospyros Virginiana: The American Persimmon, Michael P. Quinnett
Diospyros Virginiana: The American Persimmon, Michael P. Quinnett
Masters Theses
The American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) is a deciduous tree native to the Southeastern United States, and is the only genus of the Ebenaceae that is indigenous. This study is a complete reveiw of what is known about this species concerning taxonomy, ecology, morphology, history, distribution, anatomy, cytology, propagation, diseases, and pests, toxicity, chemical composition, and economic values.
The sexuality and fruit production of the persimmon is variable and not well understood. The small bell shaped flowers are usually dioecious, but they may also be monoecious, or monoecious in one year and dioecious in another. In rarer instances they …
Cleavage And Deoxygenation Of Phenolic Ethers, Derhsing Luu
Cleavage And Deoxygenation Of Phenolic Ethers, Derhsing Luu
Masters Theses
Dibromotriphenylphosphorane (DTP) in acetonitrile at 50°C was found to cleave ß-naphthylmethyl phenyl ether in preference to ß-naphthyl benzyl ether, 62% and 30% cleavage, respectively. Reaction of ß-naphthyl benzyl ether in dichloromethane at reflux produced 67% cleavage.
The quasiphosphonium complexes obtained by reaction of phenolic compounds with DTP were found to be reduced by several reducing reagents to give the corresponding aromatic hydrocarbons. Reaction of p-cresol with DTP, followed by lithium aluminum hydride reduction gave 38% toluene; sodium naphthalide reduction in THF gave 32% toluene; sodium in liquid ammonia reduction gave 12% toluene; sodium naphthalide reduction in DMF gave 15% toluene. …
A Laser Interferometric Study Of Electric Field Effects On Methane-Oxygen Flame Plasmas, Mark D. Prairie
A Laser Interferometric Study Of Electric Field Effects On Methane-Oxygen Flame Plasmas, Mark D. Prairie
Masters Theses
A laser interferometer is developed to study the refractive index field, aerodynamic structure, and three dimensional temperature profile of a methane-oxygen flame system under the influence of D.C. electric fields. A combined graphical-numerical method is used to transform the observed interference patterns into radial temperature distributions. The results indicate that the electric field exerts a marked influence on the flame stability, geometry, and charged particle flow. Experimental evidence shows that these effects are most apparent under fuel rich conditions. It is suggested an electric field may change the concentration gradients of reacting species, leading to an altered course of fuel …
A Comparison Of The Surface Polysaccharides From Rhizobium Japonicum Strains I110ars And 61a76str, And The Isolation Of Soybean Root Proteins Responsible For The Binding Of Eps From R. Japonicum Strain I110ars, Richard F. Koehler
Masters Theses
The surface polysaccharides of Rhizobium are implicated in the symbiotic process. The composition of the surface polysaccharides from two strains of Rhizobium japonicum, I110 ARS and 61A76 str, have been compared. Five polysaccharide fractions are obtained from the I110 ARS strain. They are the EPS (extracellular polysaccharide), CPS-1 and CPS-2 (capsular polysaccharide fractions), LPS (lipopolysaccharide) and Phe (polysaccharide found in the phenol layer from the phenol/water extraction). These polysaccharide fractions have identical sugar compositions. Four polysaccharide fractions are obtained from the 61A76 str strain. These are the EPS, CPS-1, SmPS (small molecular weight polysaccharide), and Phe. Each of these …
A Planning-Budgeting System For The South Eastern Special Education Joint Agreement, George C. Dudley
A Planning-Budgeting System For The South Eastern Special Education Joint Agreement, George C. Dudley
Masters Theses
Special education cost studies since the mid-nineteen fifties report problems in obtaining accurate financial information relative to programs and pupils. The author addresses similiar difficulties encountered when restrictive sources of revenue are maintained as separate from the special education joint agreement budget.
This study was conducted for two purposes: (1) To develop a planning-budgeting system which would organize multi-sources of revenue into one joint agreement financial plan; and (2) To develop a planning-budgeting chart of accounts.
Five criteria were applied to the development of the planning-budgeting system: (1) It must allow for planning the total scope of joint agreement operations; …
A Community Climate Survey Of The Mattoon Community Unit #2 School District, Doug Craig
A Community Climate Survey Of The Mattoon Community Unit #2 School District, Doug Craig
Masters Theses
School district boards of education and administrators need to constantly gather information about the attitudes and opinions of the community they serve if the true educational needs of the community are to be served. Total community consensus or opinion is preferable, but often impractical. Casual information gathered from self-selected individuals from the community is readily available, but unrepresentative and often misleading. Surveys of a selected sample of the school community can be inexpensive, practical and accurate depending on the method of information collection, the nature of the questions and the manner in which the sample is selected.
A Community Climate …

Student Misbehavior Disciplinary Actions And Alternatives, Vic Provinzano
Student Misbehavior Disciplinary Actions And Alternatives, Vic Provinzano
Masters Theses
The Illinois Constitution guarantees every child an opportunity to receive an education. However, when a child commits an act of gross disobedience or misconduct as defined by the school board, the student's right to an education may be temporarily withheld. [122 Ill. Rev. Stat. 10 - 22.6 (1979)].
The Illinois School Code, (Sec. 24-24), states "that teachers and other certificated educational employees shall maintain discipline in the schools".
It is the responsibility of the School Board and the Administration to provide rules of conduct for student behavior, and standards of student conduct should define the basic rules and major …
Charles Simic: Trends Toward An International Poetry, Denise Clark
Charles Simic: Trends Toward An International Poetry, Denise Clark
Masters Theses
In his article "Wrong Turning in American Poetry," Robert Bly believes that American poetry has been lead astray by the likes of Eliot, Pound, Moore, and Williams. He feels that the main failing of American poetry is its lack of inward, spiritual life. It is the Spanish speaking poets that Bly looks to as the true path-finders of spiritual poetry. If Bly believes that poets like Eliot and Williams were responsible for steering American poetry down the wrong path, it is a foreigner, Charles Simic, who will give American poetry the right turn it needs.
What Simic has been able …
Higher Education Administrators' Knowledge Of Section 504, Laura Montgomery Bundy
Higher Education Administrators' Knowledge Of Section 504, Laura Montgomery Bundy
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of administrators in higher education relative to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Particular emphasis was placed on the population of individuals labeled handicapped because of a learning disability. Given the number of students who receive federal aid and the wording of subsections 84.3(f) and 84.3(h) of the Federal Register of May 4, 1977, it is probable that all American postsecondary educational institutions are required to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It appears that one of the populations to be served is that …
The Family In Modern Northern Irish Drama, Ray Wallace
The Family In Modern Northern Irish Drama, Ray Wallace
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to show the plight of the family in Northern Ireland. The four plays which are the subject of this study--Within Two Shadows by Wilson John Haire, The Flats By John Boyd, Nightfall to Belfast by Patrick Galvin, and The Death of Humpty Dumpty by J. Graham Reid--deal with this innocent faction and highlight three principal effects of the troubles on their family lives. First, the families suffer internal division. They are alienated by religious/political differences which are as inseparable in these dramas as they are in Northern Irish life. Socialist doctrine opposes Christian …
The Treatment Of Women In The History Of Rasselas, Prince Of Abyssinia, Cindy Fritz
The Treatment Of Women In The History Of Rasselas, Prince Of Abyssinia, Cindy Fritz
Masters Theses
Dr. Samuel Johnson, one of the most prolific and profound contributers to the English language, is, unfortunately, better known for his life and his anti-feminist point of view. James Boswell, in his book The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D., provides many pieces of Johnson's conversations which attempt to illustrate the doctor's belief that women were unable to understand the complexities of anything beyond their domestic duties, a belief widely supported among the classes throughout the seventeenth century until the middle eighteenth century. However, this paper, using historical and biographical evidence, demonstrates that Johnson's attitude towards women, specifically in his …

A total of 200 stomachs with food were examined. Diptera adults and larvae were the most frequently occurring food item (83%), and also occurred in the highest volume (49%). Coleoptera were the second most frequently occurring item (23%), and accounted for the second largest volume (11%). Larger fish consumed a wider variety of food items. Changes in foods with season were also noted.
Feeding activity on the 24-25 July was greatest in …
Validation Of The Tactual Performance Test As An Organicity Screening Device, Stephen C. Lippold
Validation Of The Tactual Performance Test As An Organicity Screening Device, Stephen C. Lippold
Masters Theses
Organicity screening devices are those psychometric tests used to detect brain dysfunction during the initial assessment. The characteristics of such tests were listed and ones currently being used were reviewed. The review concentrated on the validity and clinical utility of these organicity tests. From the review it was concluded that the validity has not been thoroughly established, partially because weak criteria have been used. It was also concluded that current screening tests have questionable clinical utility, since an inordinant number of organically impaired people are not detected by the tests. The concept of organicity was discussed, and the Tactual Performance …
A Multivariate Analysis Of The Effects Of Money In Congressional Elections On Incumbents And Challengers, Larry Summary
A Multivariate Analysis Of The Effects Of Money In Congressional Elections On Incumbents And Challengers, Larry Summary
Masters Theses
The use of money in congressional elections will be the principal issue of this thesis. The money decides who will mount a serious contest and who will not. In determining the effect of money in congressional races, it is hypothesized that campaign spending has a much greater effect on the challenger's chances of winning than it does on the incumbent's.
One of the many implications of this thesis is that people and groups determine how well a candidate will do on election day. Such topics as long term trends in the House, congressional competition, voting behavior, conservative and liberal political …
The Social Psychology Of Imitated Jaywalking: An Extension Of Model Sex And Social Status, Edward W. Gregory Jr.
The Social Psychology Of Imitated Jaywalking: An Extension Of Model Sex And Social Status, Edward W. Gregory Jr.
Masters Theses
A field experiment is designed and conducted to examine what effects the presence of a model who jaywalks (i.e., crosses a street against a "Don't Walk" light) has on inducing jaywalking by unknowing pedestrians who are on the street corner with the model. Two models are used, one male and one female, and their perceived social status is varied by changing their attire from one day to the next to determine what effects sex and social status of models have on initiating jaywalking in other pedestrians.
The review of related literature discusses the findings of a number of studies which …
Social Democracy In North America: A Canadian Example, Rodney Lavern Johnson
Social Democracy In North America: A Canadian Example, Rodney Lavern Johnson
Masters Theses
This thesis attempts to discuss a unique political phenomenon in North America - successful Canadian socialism. The first part discusses a workable definition of ideology and a theoretical approach to the explanation of legitimate ideological diversity. The second part of the paper explains the socio-economic and political milieu of Western Canadian society in the early twentieth century and the evolution of a consequent Anglophone socialist movement in response to this environment. The third part discusses concurrent Francophone political phenomena.
Ideology is defined as an amalgamation of commonly agreed upon principles designed to promote a particular communal or national interest. Gad …
