Uridine Promotes Neurite Outgrowth In Neuro2a Cells, Jacquelyn Spathies Jan 2019

Uridine Promotes Neurite Outgrowth In Neuro2a Cells, Jacquelyn Spathies

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are the main causes of age-related dementia. These diseases can be due to neuronal cell death and/or impairment of neurite outgrowth. Giant oyster mushroom (GOM), Pleurotus giganteus, is used as a nootropic to improve cognitive function. GOM can also be used to prevent the onset of dementia. The underlying mechanism behind the medicinal property of GOM is unclear. Previous studies have shown that GOM has a high concentration of uridine. In this study, I examined the effects of uridine on neurite outgrowth in the Neuro-2a (N2a) neuroblastoma cell line. We also examined …

Preliminary Examination Of The Effects Of Time And Flexural Direction On An Anisotropic Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat, James M. Proctor Jan 2019

Preliminary Examination Of The Effects Of Time And Flexural Direction On An Anisotropic Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat, James M. Proctor

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The significance of this research was to determine the effect the main fabric weave direction and cure time has on the maximum load of 0.34 inch anisotropic Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat sample coupons. Two series of tests were run. The first used a three-point bend test on the material samples with varying cure times to determine the average maximum load associated with each. The second series of testing used followed ASTM D8030/D8030M - 16 for sample preparation and ASTM D8058 - 17 for testing to determine the flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of the test samples with and against …

Genomic Dysregulation By Overexpression Of Transcription Factors, Mackenzie Scroggins Jan 2019

Genomic Dysregulation By Overexpression Of Transcription Factors, Mackenzie Scroggins

Undergraduate Honors Theses

As one of the major organs, the liver plays vital roles in the homeostasis of an individual. Being able to identify master regulator genes, genes whose product can affect the activation or deactivation of other genes, will enrich our understanding of hepatic function and liver disease. Previously, our lab used genome-wide microarray data to identify several transcription factors that may play a key role in liver expression. Here we ask whether overexpression of these transcription factors in a non-liver cell would result in liver phenotype activation or general disruption of gene regulation. To this end, we stably introduced seven transcription …

Decentering As A Facilitator Of Psychological Well-Being, Joe Milosch Jan 2019

Decentering As A Facilitator Of Psychological Well-Being, Joe Milosch

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The current study examined one's ability to decenter (i.e., to take a third-person perspective of one's experiences) and its relationship with psychological well-being (levels of positive affect, life satisfaction, negative affect, depression, anxiety, and stress). The two dimensions of decentering are intentional decentered perspective and non-reactivity to thought content. The study also determined which of these two components is a stronger predictor of positive psychological outcomes. One hundred forty-nine college students completed measures of decentering (overall decentering, intentional decentered perspective, and non-reactivity) and psychological well-being (positive affect, life satisfaction, negative affect, depression, anxiety, and stress). Results indicated that overall decentering …

Comparative Analysis Of Bolted Joint Assemblies Subjected To Cyclical Transverse Mechanical Stress, Carlton Drew Harris Jan 2019

Comparative Analysis Of Bolted Joint Assemblies Subjected To Cyclical Transverse Mechanical Stress, Carlton Drew Harris

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of commonly-used washers in engineering structures by observing the difference in applied torque specifications and torque required to loosen bolted joint assemblies after being subjected to cyclical transverse mechanical stress. Two types of washers were tested: flat washers and split-ring helical lock washers. The physical concepts tested throughout this paper are theorized to scale to any size of bolted joint assembly. Based on the variables tested, the results are inconclusive. While the observed results did display the assemblies paired with split-ring helical lock washers required- on average- a greater force to loosen …

Exploration Of Sonic Hedgehog Gene Expression In Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas), Brooke Renee Greiner Jan 2019

Exploration Of Sonic Hedgehog Gene Expression In Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas), Brooke Renee Greiner

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Pollutants, as a result of wastewater treatments, have been shown to have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. To better understand the possible consequences caused by effluents on ecosystems, it is important to examine ecotoxicology data. One of the most commonly used species for water quality testing is the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. Ecotoxicology can then be taken one step further to understand the effects of pollutants on a molecular level. Previous research had identified effluents as causes for abnormal minnow fin morphology. In order to collect additional data on development, tanks with fathead minnows were placed at the Charleston …

Social Identity And Communicating Difference In The Current Sociopolitical Environment, Jennifer Folami Jan 2019

Social Identity And Communicating Difference In The Current Sociopolitical Environment, Jennifer Folami

Undergraduate Honors Theses

As an individual, I have always valued diversity. The blending of different cultures has always been a part of my reality because of the environment where people from different tribes, ethnicity, and religion lived together in harmony. Growing up in Nigeria, the different tribes of my country were able to co-exist, more than that, they often shared the information about their different beliefs. The sharing of the different cultures helped foster a community that was accepting of people regardless of what made them different. Moving to the United States, I experienced a culture shock because I was in a new …

Time Perception After Emotional Induction, Abigail Crowne Jan 2019

Time Perception After Emotional Induction, Abigail Crowne

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Current literature establishes trends where valent stimuli can create a subjective experience of retrospective or prospective time. The purpose of this study is to examine the consequences of estimating time that has passed as a result of valence mood induction. Time seems to pass more slowly when we are not in a pleasant state. What if a self-induced mood could change our perception of time that has passed? To answer this question, our study required participants to write about specific memories about incidents of joy or sadness, or about the classroom around them for a control condition. There was no …

The Relationship Between God Representations And Psychological Well-Being, Melanie Adams Jan 2019

The Relationship Between God Representations And Psychological Well-Being, Melanie Adams

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The study examined the relationship between people's affective and cognitive representations of God (positive feelings about God, anxious feelings toward God, anger toward God, the perception that God is supportive, ruling or punishing, or passive) and their psychological well-being. Eighty-six college students who identified as Christian responded to the Questionnaire of God Representations (Schaap-Jonker, 2018) and a set of scales measuring hedonic well-being (life satisfaction, positive/negative affect), eudaimonic well-being (personal growth, environmental mastery, positive relationships, purpose in life, self-acceptance, and autonomy), and psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress). Results indicated that perceiving God's actions as supportive was associated with higher …
