A Higher Authority For Collective Bargaining: 2018, John Lavin
A Higher Authority For Collective Bargaining: 2018, John Lavin
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. articulated a high moral ground in his 1961 address to the National AFL-CIO. Dr. King’s speech identified the common sense shared by the Civil Rights and Labor movements. In particular, he praised unions’ leadership for advocating the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Furthermore, he envisioned the ethical principles bringing Labor and Civil Rights together to realize a high moral ground for promulgating workers’ equity, equality and respectful dialogue across divisions of class, race and national origin. I contrast Dr. King’s ethical statement and system of values regarding the NLRA to a series of legal decisions …

Public Health And Personal Choice: The Ethics Of Vaccine Mandates And Parental Refusal In The United States, Rebecca Horan, Jonelle Depetro
Public Health And Personal Choice: The Ethics Of Vaccine Mandates And Parental Refusal In The United States, Rebecca Horan, Jonelle Depetro
2019 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
In January 2019 The World Health Organization (WHO) released its list Ten threats to global health in 2019. For the first time ever, vaccine hesitancy, “the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccine services” is officially on the list.1 Although great progress has been made in reducing or eradicating various diseases such as polio, measles, and whooping cough (pertussis), the number of parents refusing vaccination for their children is growing rapidly in what is now often referred to as the “anti-vaccination movement” ( or “anti-vax movement”). This is causing a threat to public health as …
Southern Sympathies In Illinois As Expressed Through "Nelson Versus The People", Katherine Gosnell
Southern Sympathies In Illinois As Expressed Through "Nelson Versus The People", Katherine Gosnell
2019 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
During the antebellum period, Illinois proved to be problematic for the North. Geographically, it is a Northern State. Population wise, it was split between Northern and Southern tradition. Around the Chicago area, abolitionism had a strong pull as expressed by the various colored conventions held there, as well as the variety of Whig/Republican newspapers. From the state capital of Springfield and further south, many people held Democratic view points and could sympathize with their Southern neighbors. As Illinois had slave states on two sides, it is easy to understand how these neighbors had an impact on Illinoisan culture and politics. …

Functional Characterization Of Glutamate Carboxypeptidase Ii In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Hashni Epa Vidana Gamage
Functional Characterization Of Glutamate Carboxypeptidase Ii In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Hashni Epa Vidana Gamage
Masters Theses
Glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII) is a transmembrane zinc metalloprotease expressed in a number of organisms: from yeast to worm to humans. In humans, GCPII has been observed as a multifunctional protein and expressed in prostate, intestine, kidney, brain, tumor-associated neovasculature and other tissues as five paralogs. In the human small intestine, hGCPII is proposed to facilitate the folate absorption by cleaving terminal glutamate residues in dietary folates. Folates act as a cofactor in one-carbon metabolic pathways such as nucleotide synthesis, amino acid synthesis, DNA repair, and consequently involved in cell division and growth. The hGCPII homolog is found in the …

"Mystery Meat" And "Bulldyke": Disciplining Gender And Silencing Women Sports Reporters On Reddit, Kayla J. Peterson
Masters Theses
Most of the sports industry is a male dominated space where women are very rarely accepted. We see men in the field, whether they work or play, defend the space and tell women reporters to “stay in their lane.” This study focuses on an online news-sharing site, reddit, and examines how sports fans take it upon themselves to defend sports as a male space. Reporters, such as Sarah Spain, Jemele Hill, and Doris Burke, are subjected to hundreds of comments that silence them and discipline them based on their gender. This study emphasizes the need for gender equality in what …

Masters Theses
Using a qualitative methodology. the researcher studied current first-year graduate students in a College Student Affairs program. The study was narrowed down to six graduate students based on their responses to a short participant survey to ensure the participants came from diverse types of undergraduate involvement. These participants were interviewed and asked a range of questions about their undergraduate involvement experiences. skills gained from …

EFFECTIVENESS OF PCBE ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT ii
Abstract
This study examines the impact of Personalized Competency-Based Education (PCBE) on student engagement across varying ethnicities and grade levels. Personalized Competency-Based Education is built upon the premise that student learning should be based upon the following characteristics: learning is student-owned, learning accommodates flexible pacing, learning shows demonstration of proficiency, students track their own progress, and students determine their own learning pathways and goals. Since current research is limited on the impact of PCBE, especially at the secondary level of education, further study is needed in order to determine how PCBE implementation will …
