A Trophic Analysis Of Three Species Of Elmidae From Polecat And Riley Creeks, Coles County, Ill., Robert D. Davis Jr.

The food habits of Stenelmis sexlineata, Stenelmis vittipennis, Stenelmis crenata, and larval Stenelmis were studied in Polecat and Riley Creeks, Coles County, Illinois. Rock Scrapings were taken and compared with the gut analyses of the larval and adult beetles. These beetles were found to be scraper/collectors and detritivore/herbivores, generally scraping surfaces of rocks. Detritus, green algae, and diatoms were found to be the major categories present in both the rock scrapings and the gut analyses. The cellular contents of diatoms (chloroplasts and other cytoplasmic inclusions) were digested by the beetles. No conclusions regarding feeding preferences are made, …

Standard procedures for presenting home range data for species such as the fox squirrel on a single plane do not adequately represent the space they occupy. Comparisons of techniques for presenting the home range of this species on a three-dimensional basis were made using data obtained by direct observations of color marked squirrels. Three-dimensional ellipsoid models of their range varied from 9,154 m³ to 63,811 m³ and were assumed to be more accurate when observation points approached 50 in number. This paper investigates the use of penial structure to study the relationships among the turtles of peninsular Malaysia. The penial morphology of Malaysian turtles, mainly batagurines, has not been previously described. Herein penes of 12 Malaysian species are described and compared to three Nearctic species. Each was coded for 22 penial characters which were used for numerical analysis by the NT-SYS numerical taxonomy system of multivariate statistical proceedures. The analysis failed to distinguish groups below the family level when the 15 species were tested. The test also failed to distinguish the complexes within the Batagurinae when they were analyzed separately. …

Extensive research regarding the effects of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) on vascular and nonvascular plants has been reported. Sulfur dioxide has been shown to interrupt normal metabolism, to interrupt normal reproduction, and to alter the plant's morphology.

One hypothesis regarding the lack of bryophytes in urban areas is that the life cycle is being interrupted. It has been shown that moss protonemata are sensitive to SO₂ concentrations in urban areas. Several authors noted that sexual reproduction is blocked among many species which do occur in urban environments. For many years, the role of anaerobic bacteria in human diseasewas considered important only in such clostridial diseases as gas gangrene,botulism and tetanus. In the last 10 years, however, the developmentof new methods to isolate and identify anaerobic bacteria has establishedthe pathogenic role of non-sporeforming anaerobic bacteria in awide variety of clinical infections in humans. Bacteroides fragilis isnow known to account for approximately one-fourth of all anaerobicbacteria isolated from human clinical specimens.

One hundred largemouth bass, ranging in size from 148mm to 385mm, were equally divided into four treatment groups (control, tag only, tag and left pectoral fin clip, and tag and all paired fins clipped) , and placed into a 5.56 hectare pond on 22 May and 25 May 1979. Three corn inbreds were grown in artificially inoculated, steamed greenhouse soil amended with atrazine (2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine) to determine the herbicide's effect on the severity of Gibberella zeae (Schwabe) Petch-induced seedling blight. Corn inbreds used were Gibberella-resistant (FR632), Gibberella-intermediate (FRMo17), and Gibberella-susceptible (C123^HT). Soils were amended with atrazine at rates of 2, 15, and 30 ppm.

Susceptible inbred seedlings showed no response to the herbicide with symptims equally severe in controls and all 3 concentrations of atrazine. Intermediate inbred seedlings grown in all atrazine amended soils showed significantly more severe disease symptoms than controls. Soil amended with …

Three sludges - aerobic, anaerobic, Milorganite, and peat moss were tested for fertilizing ability, seed inhibition, and chemical composition. Using green bean (Phaseolus sp.) and rye grass (Lolium perenne) seeds in two sludge amended soils, a greenhouse study indicated growth enhancement for the rye grass and variable results for the green beans. Algal and fungal contaminations were problems. Seeds germinated in sludge extract were inhibited, but no correlation with the chemical analyses could be established. Only Milorganite had a heavy metal content significantly higher than the soils tested.

In Westville, Illinois, Minimal Competency Testing (MCT) began in the spring of 1979, after the writer of this paper and a colleague attended a meeting in Peoria, Illinois. This two day workshop focused on the Peoria MCT program and provided the initial impetus for Westville's developing program.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of a walk or jog recovery on two-minute run performances and the concentrations of blood lactate.

Eight highly trained male subjects were selected from the Eastern Illinois University Track Team. The test procedure consisted of two, maximal two-minute runs on the track for distance, separated by a 30-minute recovery. The recovery consisted of a walk at 20-minutes per mile pace or a jog at 7½ to 8 minutes per mile pace. Twelve adult male rats were given free access to a two bottle free-selection of tap water or a 10% ethanol/tap water solution in the home cage for a period of 140 consecutive days with the alcohol consumption data in the form of mg absolute ETOH/g subject weight collected daily. This study incorporated three stages. Phase I was a 40 day period of alcohol acclimation with alcohol consumption during the second 20 days constituting the baseline consumption rate. The repopulation of stream fishes was studied from 17 May 1979 to 25 October 1979 following a major kill (100% mortality) caused by nitrogen fertilizer pollution in Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois. The extent of recovery was determined by comparing post-kill collections with pre-kill survey data that was collected on 25 October 1978.

Repopulation began six days after the abatement of the pollution source. It is suggested that the initial source of repopulation was from the nearest undamaged tributary. There is recent evidence that the pineal gland in some species may have lymphatic qualities during early post natal life. In this study the development and structure of the pineal complex in the CDF₁ mouse is examined in fetal, neonatal, juvenile, and adult stages. The gland appears as an out growth of the dorsal wall of the third ventricle of the brain and at ten days gestation attains a mean size of 90 microns in the transverse and 35 microns in the median saggital plane. The effect of heating on aquatic ecosystems by energy producing power plants has not been fully determined. A comparative study of the reproduction of Pseudemys scripta was conducted in heated and natural lakes in southwestern Illinois from 30 March to 10 July, 1979. Lakes used were the same as those used for comparative growth studies of P. scripta by another researcher. Lake Baldwin (heated) has had a reduction in vegetation since that researcher's work. Temperatures were taken of air, water surface, and one meter deep.

The heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, is widespread in dogs in North America and has been reported in wild canids in many states. This is a report of this parasite in hearts removed from coyote, red fox and gray fox carcasses collected in Illinois. A total of 415 coyotes had a significantly higher infection rate (23.6%) than 225 red foxes (3.6%) and 99 gray foxes (3.0%). Infection rates in red foxes and coyotes were significantly higher in or near the Wabash Border Natural Division along the eastern side of the state, suggesting a relationship between infection rates and this region. An investigation of 2 sites on the Embarras River and 1 site on Polecat Creek was undertaken for a one-year period. Special emphasis was given to phytoplankton species and to their seasonal variations. Approximately 170 species from 8 divisions of algae were encountered during the one-year period.

Temperature was found to have no direct correlation with algal periodicity.

Palmer's organic pollution genus index was applied to determine the approximate levels of organic pollution at all three sampling sites. Only one time during the year (10/1/79), did all three sites suggest high organic pollution.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of "N-Serve" (DOW) on the availability of urea nitrogen and the subsequent greening effect on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings as compared to the availability of nitrogen and subsequent greening from a controlled release ureaformaldehyde fertilizer. A low organic matter sandy loam soil and a high organic matter clay loam soil were used in this study. The traditional approaches to Herman Melville's Billy Budd focus upon the question of whether or not the story was Melville's final statement of acceptance or irony. Both arguments are sociological in nature in that the different sides argue that Melville either finally accepts or continues to reject by irony, the forms of society. The acceptance critics contend that Melville ends by seeing value in the forms because of their use for maintaining order in society; the irony critics claim that Melville was taking a final satirical poke at society's limiting forms and authority.

Reestablishment of the wild turkey has been successful in the southern part of Illinois where large established tracts of woodland occur. However, turkeys are capable of surviving in areas with less forest cover, if food, nesting materials and protection are available. This project evaluated the potential turkey habitat of a 14-county area of eastern Illinois along the drainage of the Wabash River. Six potential release sites were selected and the habitat evaluated. In these areas, oak (Quercus spp.) and hickory (Carya spp.) were the dominant tree species.
