A new cynipid species, Saphonecrus hupingshanensis Liu, Yang, et Zhu, sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Synergini), is described from China. This is the first species of the inquilinous tribe Synergini ever known to have an association with chinquapins (Fagaceae: Castanopsis). The biology and implication to species diversity of Cynipidae in eastern and southeast Asia are discussed.

Few studies have compared anthropometric characteristics among national class athletes from different resistance training disciplines, such as Olympic Weightlifting (OL), Power Lifting (PL), and Bodybuilding (BB). Objective: The purpose of the current study was to determine if significant differences exist in the relationship between thigh muscle cross-sectional area and back squat strength among national class athletes from the sports of OL, PL, and BB. Methods: Fifteen national class athletes were assessed for back squat strength, mid-thigh circumference, and mid-thigh skinfold from which total thigh cross-sectional was estimated. By now, most academicians are aware of the assaults on academic freedom as contained in the Academic Bill of Rights (ABOR) legislation introduced, in some form, in some 24 states. Part of a national movement to muzzle professors deemed too liberal for our colleges and universities, this witch hunt, instigated by former liberal radical David Horowitz, has had a chilling effect on campuses. Some faculty organizations are fighting back; APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), a union representing some 5,500 faculty and coaches in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), is one of them. Genome Wide Analysis Of Hepatic Gene Silencing In Mammalian Cell Variants, Jeffrey L. Kurkewich
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Using microarray data, a genome wide analysis of hepatic gene-silencing in four hepatoma variant cell lines was carried out. The purpose of this analysis was to identify candidate genes that may be able to restore liver function in non-functional cell variants, ultimately giving insight into the mechanisms behind global hepatic gene expression. Based on a selection scheme allowing only for genes activated or repressed at least 5 fold in 2 out of the 4 variant cell lines, 225 genes were found to be repressed while a total of 76 genes were found to be activated. Genomics and bioinformatics are topics of increasing interest in undergraduate biological science curricula. Many existing exercises focus on gene annotation and analysis of a single genome. In this paper, we present two educational modules designed to enable students to learn and apply fundamental concepts in comparative genomics using examples related to bacterial pathogenesis. Students first examine alignments of genomes of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains isolated from three food-poisoning outbreaks using the multiple-genome alignment tool Mauve. Iliamna remota Greene (Kankakee mallow, Malvaceae) is listed as endangered in Illinois and is endemic to Langham Island in the Kankakee River, Kankakee County, Illinois. Information on ways to break seed dormancy of I. remota would be useful for restoration and management. The purpose of this study was to determine if hot water at different temperatures and for different lengths of time would break seed dormancy. Seeds were dipped for 60 seconds into water at 70, 80, 90 or 100 degrees C with 22 degrees C dips as a control. In another trial, seeds were dipped into 80 degrees C …

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have revealed the existence of at least 50 species of Morchella worldwide and demonstrated a high degree of continental endemism within the genus. Here we describe 19 phylogenetic species of Morchella from North America, 14 of which are new (M. diminutiva, M. virginiana, M. esculentoides, M. prava, M. cryptica, M. frustrata, M. populiphila, M. sextelata, M. septimelata, M. capitata, M. importuna, M. snyderi, M. brunnea and M. septentrionalis). Dry preservation has been explored as an energy-efficient alternative to cryopreservation, but the high sensitivity of mammalian cells to desiccation stress has been one of the major hurdles in storing cells in the desiccated state. An important strategy to reduce desiccation sensitivity involves use of the disaccharide trehalose. Trehalose is known to improve desiccation tolerance in mammalian cells when present on both sides of the cell membrane. Because trehalose is membrane impermeant the development of desiccation strategies involving this promising sugar is hindered.
