Problematic Social Media Use And Depression In College Students: A Mediation Study, Morgan Hummel
Problematic Social Media Use And Depression In College Students: A Mediation Study, Morgan Hummel
Masters Theses
Recent research has shown a relationship between problematic social media use and depression symptoms in adults in the United States. Social comparison has been identified as a mediator in this relationship in previous studies. Little research has explored the underlying mechanisms in social media use and the onset of depression symptoms in college aged students. The present study examines whether social comparison mediates the relationship between problematic social media use and depression symptoms in 102 college students in the US. The participants completed measures of problematic social media use, social comparison, and depression symptoms. The results indicated a positive relationship …

The Experiences And Transition Of Black Former Student Athletes Through And Out Of College, Nyjah Lane
Masters Theses
Using a narrative approach this researcher used a qualitative study to examine the experiences and transitions of former Black student athletes at a Division I institution. The study involved four participants who were three to four years removed from completing college and athletic retirement. Schlossberg’s (1981) transition theory, Astin’s (1999) involvement theory, and Baxter Magolda’s (2008) Self authorship theory was used as the theoretical frameworks for this study. The findings provide insight in to how their experiences as college student athletes impacted their ability to graduate and transition out of college. The participants relied on the support and strategies they …

An Exploration Of Middle School Teachers’ Utilization Of Culturally Responsive Teaching, Samantha Phillips
Masters Theses
Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) can be used as a means for effectively teaching and managing students and decreases the achievement gap between students of Color and their White counterparts. This qualitative study with an ethnographic design examines the utilization of culturally responsive teaching strategies of two middle school teachers and two principals in public schools on the Southwest side of Chicago. The study is guided by one research question: What aspects of culturally responsive teaching practices are teachers using in their teaching strategies? The study has two purposes: To analyze the effectiveness of two middle school teachers’ utilization of culturally …

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
As our education systems become increasingly diverse, it is crucial for “diverse” students to see themselves reflected in the course materials they consume as this may lead to higher persistence, retention and overall student success. It is also vital for “non-diverse” students to gain a better understanding of the experiences of others particularly as they navigate a world which is much more diverse and global minded than ever before.
Racial And Implicit Bias: Diagnosis Disparities In The African Diaspora: Implications For Counseling Practice, Jahaan Abdullah
Racial And Implicit Bias: Diagnosis Disparities In The African Diaspora: Implications For Counseling Practice, Jahaan Abdullah
Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)
Disparities in healthcare are far from uncommon. Research demonstrates there are disproportionate diagnoses of psychiatric disorders and mental health disorders for those in the African Diaspora. African Americans are three to four time more likely to receive a more stigmatizing psychotic disorder diagnosis than Caucasian Americans (Schwartz & Blankenship, 2014). Presenters in this session will discuss the disparity in diagnosis for those in the African diaspora. Additionally, data associated with this research, the corresponding increased trauma associated with more stigmatizing diagnoses and the paucity in counseling research regarding these disparities will be discussed.

At this annual celebration, we, as a shared community, are pleased that the important work of faculty continues and evolves as faculty have broadened and redefined the boundaries of scholarship, creativity, and innovation throughout the COVID, late-COVID, and soon-to-be post-COVID eras. For that reason, our faculty, …
