Clean Water In Haiti, Hannah Mchugh
Clean Water In Haiti, Hannah Mchugh
2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
In the past few years, Haiti has been a topic that has been in the news here in the United States for many reasons. These reports typically show the faces of hundreds of starving and injured Haitians who live in turmoil and they discuss the disasters that have befallen the country. While these reports do not usually show the more pleasant aspects, they are relatively accurate in showing the state of the majority of the country. A major impact on a country that is in such a dire state is the presence and availability of clean water. But to understand …

Drinking Games Among College Students, Emily Schumacher
2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
The purpose of this study was to explore, analyze, and compare the attitudes, behaviors, consequences, and reasons for participation in drinking games among college students. An 11-item questionnaire was created and used to survey respondents. Face and content validity were established by using an expert panel. The survey included demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal information and consisted of yes or no, multiple choice, and ranking questions. The data was analyzed through descriptive statistics using SPSS. Data was reported by frequencies and percentages. Descriptive studies allowed the researcher to gain a better understanding of the attitudes and behaviors of college students participating …
Housing E.L.'S G.L.S And Married Students: The Story Of Trailers, Barracks, And Apartments At Eastern Lllinois University, Philip Mohr
2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
Eastern illinois University's campus was small before the 1940s when compared to its size and buildings of today. It handled students by the hundreds, instead of thousands. Except for the women living in Pemberton Hall, students found their own quarters around Charleston. The administration did not consider housing for married students a priority simply because the number of people who were both married and college students made no significant blip on the radar. Then, as many twentieth century narratives go, World War II changed everything. Providing on-campus housing options for postwar populations became a driving force in the development of …

The Relationship Between Dialectical Self And Hedonic, Eudaimonic, And Social Well-Being, Ayaka Hisanaga
2012 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
Many researchers in psychology have sought to identify and examine various factors that foster mental health and psychological well-being. The way one perceives and experiences one's self (also called "sense of self') has been one of these factors. The concept of a dialectical self refers to a specific way we sense or view ourselves. An individual with a dialectical sense of self recognizes not only positive attributes of the self but also negative qualities. It represents an ability to accept and tolerate contradictions and fluidity in the self. Although previous studies have shown that a dialectical self is associated with …

Trehalose Transporter From African Chironomid Larvae Improves Desiccation Tolerance Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Nilay Chakraborty, Michael A. Menze, Heidi Elmoazzen, Halong Vu, Martin Yarmush, Steven C. Hand, Mehmet Toner
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Dry preservation has been explored as an energy-efficient alternative to cryopreservation, but the high sensitivity of mammalian cells to desiccation stress has been one of the major hurdles in storing cells in the desiccated state. An important strategy to reduce desiccation sensitivity involves use of the disaccharide trehalose. Trehalose is known to improve desiccation tolerance in mammalian cells when present on both sides of the cell membrane. Because trehalose is membrane impermeant the development of desiccation strategies involving this promising sugar is hindered. We explored the potential of using a high-capacity trehalose transporter (TRET1) from the African chironomid Polypedilum vanderplanki[21] …

Graduate Alumnus: Outstanding Graduate Alumni Awards - Class Of 2012, Graduate School Of Eastern Illinois University
Graduate Alumnus
Since 1951 Eastern has offered advanced study
with master’s programming. Since that first
offering thousands of students have earned
graduate degrees, and EIU graduate alumni
have changed the world we live in. In 2005
EIU celebrated more than 50 years of graduate
education by honoring 50 graduate alumni
as Outstanding Graduate Alumni. That same
year the Graduate Alumni Advisory Board was
created and met for the first time. Since those
initial 50 honorees, the Graduate Alumni
Advisory Board, the Graduate School, and EIU’s
graduate programs have continued to honor
the achievements and accomplishments of our
graduate alumni every year.

Negotiating Within A Shared Governance Format, Suzanne C. Wagner, C. Henrik Borgstrom
Negotiating Within A Shared Governance Format, Suzanne C. Wagner, C. Henrik Borgstrom
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
The act of unionization creates a sense of unity among faculty, however, it also creates an adversarial relationship with administration. Although both the administration and the faculty believe they have the university’s best interests in mind, contract negotiations are typically contentious and divisive. A unique process for negotiations is presented illustrating how working within a shared governance format can enable faculty and administration to work together in preparation, research and analysis, problem solving and mutual gains bargaining that results in success for both parties and, ultimately, the university.
Examining The Decline In Bargaining Power In Faculty Labor Unions In The United States: The Effects Of Reduced Monopoly Power In Providing Public Higher Education, Lynn A. Smith, Robert S. Balough
Examining The Decline In Bargaining Power In Faculty Labor Unions In The United States: The Effects Of Reduced Monopoly Power In Providing Public Higher Education, Lynn A. Smith, Robert S. Balough
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This study examines the decline in the economic power of faculty labor unions in public higher education in the United States in recent years. The authors assume the labor union is a utility maximizing entity and that income accrues to the “union family.” The union family attempts to maximize this income. By analyzing collective bargaining agreements and hiring practices between the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, the authors construct bargaining indices. Because this study is focused on the change in bargaining power of labor unions in public higher education …
Collective Bargaining In United Kingdom Higher Education, Helen Fairfoul, Laurence Hopkins, Geoff White
Collective Bargaining In United Kingdom Higher Education, Helen Fairfoul, Laurence Hopkins, Geoff White
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This article provides an overview of the collective bargaining system in United Kingdom (UK) higher education and considers some of the current challenges. The arrangements for determining the pay of staff in UK higher education reflect both the historical context of the UK funding system and the unique nature of UK industrial relations law. From World War II, the funding of UK higher education has predominantly come from central government spending with a strong central framework of policy and governance. Since the 1960s, the higher education sector has grown dramatically, both in terms of student numbers and the number of …
