Maladaptive Behaviors Within The Context Of Play, Elizabeth L. Schroeder Apr 2013

Maladaptive Behaviors Within The Context Of Play, Elizabeth L. Schroeder

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Play-based assessment is an observational technique used to evaluate young children's development. The Play Assessment/Intervention System (PLAIS) is one of the most widely researched play-based assessment models and assesses domains such as exploratory play, simple pretend play, complex pretend play, and non-play. One of the criticisms of early childhood assessments and screening instruments is they neglect to evaluate the social and emotional development of young children. The PLAIS codes for aggressive behavior, but not within the context of play. Given that aggression is typical among young children, this study created an observational supplement to the PLAIS that allows observers to …

Tattoos And Sexual Attraction, Daniel J. Delaney Apr 2013

Tattoos And Sexual Attraction, Daniel J. Delaney

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study examines the affect tattoos play on sexual attraction. Due to many health risks which accompany the tattooing process, those who get tattoos without having any negative health effects would thus have healthier immune systems. Over thousands of years of tattooing and sexual mating, humans may have evolved to prefer mates with tattoos due to the fact that body modification signals biological quality. Unique from other research which links sexual attraction and body modification, this study had undergraduate participants rate a series of photos of individuals who did and did not display a tattoo. While we hypothesized that participants …

[Malaysia] Early Education And Development In Malaysia: Issues And Challenges In Providing A Framework For A Multiethnic Society, Shamah Md-Yunus

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This paper provides a brief overview of early education in Malaysia with focus on the issues and challenges in providing quality early education for a multiethnic society. Conflicting interests between majority and minority ethnic groups not only cause different educational outcomes and expectations for children and families but also create challenges to the government to provide quality and equality of education to all young children. Some suggestions for a framework for early education in Malaysia are discussed.

What’S Ahead In Faculty Collective Bargaining? The New And The Déjà Vu, Daniel J. Julius, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr. Feb 2013

What’S Ahead In Faculty Collective Bargaining? The New And The Déjà Vu, Daniel J. Julius, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr.

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

As faculty collective bargaining reaches the half-century mark, the authors take a critical look at what has or has not worked at the bargaining table; how the early expectations of what faculty bargaining would bring to the academy have or have not been realized; and what the future holds, both in terms of process and the substantive issues that will be brought to the table. Dr. Julius has been a faculty member, administrator and employer representative in negotiations at many institutions; Mr. DiGiovanni has served a labor counsel and has negotiated with faculty unions at numerous institutions since the late …

Shared Governance And Academic Collective Bargaining In American Higher Education: A Potential Model For U.S. Participation In The Global Experience Of Works Councils And Codetermination, Neil Bucklew, Christopher N. Ellison, Jeffery D. Houghton Feb 2013

Shared Governance And Academic Collective Bargaining In American Higher Education: A Potential Model For U.S. Participation In The Global Experience Of Works Councils And Codetermination, Neil Bucklew, Christopher N. Ellison, Jeffery D. Houghton

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper examines shared governance traditions in U.S. higher education in the context of the global models of employee representation, including works councils and codetermination. The authors begin with an overview of global employee representation legislation and practices before contrasting these with U.S. labor law and traditions. The authors then examine the unique governance structure of U.S. higher education as a key exception to U.S. law and practice that may inform our understanding of the potential for these practices in U.S. organizations. The paper concludes by examining the implications of this example for public policy and employment practices in the …

Ohio Sb5 And The Attempt To “Yeshiva” Public University Faculty, Mary Ellen Benedict, Louis M. Benedict Feb 2013

Ohio Sb5 And The Attempt To “Yeshiva” Public University Faculty, Mary Ellen Benedict, Louis M. Benedict

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

In 2011, the introduction of Ohio Senate Bill 5 (SB5) attempted to drastically curtail public sector collective bargaining in Ohio. The bill included a proposed amendment designed by the Inter-University Council of Ohio, an organization of the top administrators of the state universities in Ohio, under the guise of applying the United States Supreme Court’s decision in NLRB v. Yeshiva to faculty at Ohio’s public universities. The avowed intent of the proposed language was to classify all faculty as supervisors or managers and thereby make them ineligible to bargain collectively. After mounting opposition and grass roots efforts, SB5 was ultimately …
