Amperometric Determination Of Chemical Oxygen Demand, Catherine Eckert Hutchins
Amperometric Determination Of Chemical Oxygen Demand, Catherine Eckert Hutchins
Masters Theses
A method is described for measuring the low level --5 to 50 ppm-- chemical oxygen demand (COD) of water samples by amperometric titration. The method involves digestion of the sample with potassium dichromate in a 50% sulfuric acid solution using one-fifth the reagents and sample required for the standard COD method. This is followed by an amperometric titration using a standard ferrous ammonium sulfate solution and employing a rotating platinum electrode in a three-electrode potentiostatic system. The titration is carried out at a potential of +0.80 volts versus a saturated calomel electrode, thus eliminating the need for O2 purging …

Occupational Evaluation In A Small School Setting, Dale L. Miller
Masters Theses
During the 1976-77 school term a study to evaluate the Cissna Park, Unit Six high school occupational education program was undertaken with the cooperation of the administration, guidance counselor, citizens advisory council, and occupational teachers.
PURPOSE: The study was entered into in order to determine future goals and directions for the programs involved. The period of time in which the study was conducted showed declining enrollments in the school district as well as serious financial problems. New information was needed to provide a basis for decisions the board of education would be dealing with concerning programs and staff.
PROCESS: Areas …

A Field Experience Involving An Administrative Internship And The Development Of A Course Description And Guidelines For North Clay High School, Ray J. Green
Masters Theses
As illustrated by the title, this field experience included two major areas: (1) an administrative internship and (2) the development of a high school curriculum guide and the updating of course descriptions for the author's school district.
The administrative internship was established for the purpose of giving the author as much first-hand administrative experience as possible. It involved the author (then a teacher at the high school) working during his preparation period each day in the high school office under the direction of the principal. The various duties performed by the intern and the situations he encountered are recorded in …
Needs Assessment Project For Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Moultrie, Edgar And Shelby Counties, Rose Mary Shepherd
Needs Assessment Project For Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Moultrie, Edgar And Shelby Counties, Rose Mary Shepherd
Masters Theses
This project reflects the concern for maintaining and improving the quality of educational programs in the region to be comprised of Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Moultrie, Edgar, and Shelby Counties.
The establishing of this region of six counties was brought about by a change in the organization and structure of the Illinois State Education Agency. A State Board of Education was established and began a system reorganization which tended to decentralize the state agency into regional area service units. In Illinois, through the elected superintendent-leaders, the kind, quality, and extent of services provided by the Regional Offices of Education have varied …

Administrative Field Experience, Salem Community High School, Lillian L. Phillips
Masters Theses
The goal or purpose of an administrative intern program is to expose the prospective principal or superintendent to the integral workings of the position so he can gain the necessary insight and training which will enable him to eventually function in such a capacity.
The prospective administrator then has the opportunity to learn, through application, the principles and theories he has been taught.
The decision was made to serve an internship under the supervision and direction of the principal at Salem Community High School. The prospective intern was to work two to three hours a day with the principal in …
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Client's Expectations And Preferences Of Directive Vs. Nondirective Counseling Approaches, Ching-Chuen Chan
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Client's Expectations And Preferences Of Directive Vs. Nondirective Counseling Approaches, Ching-Chuen Chan
Masters Theses
Theoretical and data based research has suggested that clients' expectation of counselor and counseling approaches are important variables affecting the counseling procedures. Clients' preferences for different theoretically derived approach were also found to be important determinants of counseling outcome. However, little research has been done on the cross-cultural aspect of client's expectation and preferences regarding counseling. The present study examined and compared the differences of expectations and preferences of directive vs. nondirective approach between Chinese and American college students. It was hypothesized that the authoritarian upbringing of Chinese students would influence their preference and expectations of counseling in favor of …
Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan
Resettlement Problems Of Prisoners-Of-War Of The Japanese In World War Ii And The Chinese Communists In Korea, Allen Hanegan
Masters Theses
The readjustment problems that were encountered by the prisoners-of-war (POWs) were caused by their identification problems, the chief aspect of which was their defensive isolationism. These problems produced further difficulties for the individual POW in the behavioral category and for the entire POW group in their underlying distrust of the outside world. These also produced confused reactions, paranoid syndromes, and a lack of participation in military and civilian affairs, and were expressed in the POWs as fearful withdrawal and belligerent negation with anti-social overtones. These problems were more marked in the case of the Korean War prisoners than in the …

Handbook For The Champaign County Youth Detention Center, James A. Talley Jr.
Masters Theses
This handbook was developed to serve the needs of the Champaign County Youth Detention Center and interested community members. It is also designed to serve as a guideline for future handbooks at the center and for other agencies which may require such a handbook. This handbook should eliminate any confusion concerning regulations and policy of the center and prove to be satisfactory replacement for single sheet information which was formerly used.
There was an apparent need for this handbook to replace the intake folder and thereby provide a more useful and meaningful method of transmitting vitally important information to concerned …

This field study defines the role of a Unit Leader in a school using Individually Guided Education. Specifically, it defines the role of a unit leader at Roach School in Decatur, Illinois.
Individually Guided Education is a new form of elementary education. It uses multiunit organization and instructional programming for individual students. It uses an Instructional Improvement Committee made up of unit or team leaders and the principal. These persons coordinate the curriculum within the school. The writer defined each of these areas - Individually Guided Education, Unit Leader, and the Instructional Improvement Committee in two ways. One definition looked …
Androgyny And Psychological Adjustment Of Heterosexual And Homosexual Women, Deborah R. Donison
Androgyny And Psychological Adjustment Of Heterosexual And Homosexual Women, Deborah R. Donison
Masters Theses
Early research on the study of lesbianism was largely psychoanalytically oriented and contended that homosexuality was a form of psychopathology. Many have found that female homosexuals have a deep sense of inferiority and suffer from neuroticism. Recent investigation however, indicates that this is not necessarily the case. It has now been found that lesbians are no more neurotic than female heterosexuals. Furthermore, several other investigators have found lesbians to be better adjusted, in some respects, than heterosexual women.
Such differences are accountable for a number of reasons including the use of nonpatient subjects, reduction in sampling errors and the use …
Personality Characteristics And Locus Of Control Of Asthmatic, Diabetic, And Chronic Renal Failure Children, Mary Margaret Dwyer
Personality Characteristics And Locus Of Control Of Asthmatic, Diabetic, And Chronic Renal Failure Children, Mary Margaret Dwyer
Masters Theses
Past research has demonstrated that there are personality differences between individuals suffering from chronic illnesses and those who are “healthy”. Personality correlates of chronically ill children have also been evidenced, especially regarding specific illnesses.
The present study sought to determine if children suffering from asthma, diabetes, and chronic renal failure exhibit personality characteristics unique to and/or common to these particular groups. A second objective was to determine if Asthmatic, Diabetic, and Chronic Renal Failure Children display a difference or commonality in locus of control expectancies.
Ten male and 13 female outpatients at the Pediatrics Clinic of Michael Reese Hospital and …
The Relationship Between Empathy And Socially Deviant Behaviors In Delinquent Adolescents, Terrie L. Fisk
The Relationship Between Empathy And Socially Deviant Behaviors In Delinquent Adolescents, Terrie L. Fisk
Masters Theses
Past research has demonstrated that empathy, traditionally defined as the ability to discriminate, label and then experience the emotional response of another, acts as an inhibitor of aggressive behavior. Additional evidence has shown an increase in empathic functioning can be the result of various empathy training strategies. It has recently been hypothesized that aggressive behavior might be decreased as empathic functioning increases. The present study sought to determine if an inverse relationship existed between empathy and socially deviant behavior, which is a less extreme degree of aggression characterized by disruptiveness and attention seeking. In addition, it was hypothesized that if …
A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick
A Pilot Study Of A Sex Education Program In A Sheltered Workshop Using A Cognitive-Behavioral Model Based On Rational Emotive Therapy, Jacqueline A. Rieck, Thomas E. Frederick
Masters Theses
This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. Additionally, when any form of sexuality was expressed by such people it resulted in shock …
The Effects Of Residual Chlorine On Selected Microflora Of Kickapoo And Cassell Creek, James A. Mcgaughey
The Effects Of Residual Chlorine On Selected Microflora Of Kickapoo And Cassell Creek, James A. Mcgaughey
Masters Theses
The survival of fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, and heterotrophs after exposure to chlorine were compared in receiving waters of the Mattoon and Charleston, Illinois waste treatment facilities employing membrane filter techniques and Standard Plate Counts. Water samples were taken from receiving waters upstream from the treatment plant, from secondary effluent and chlorinated secondary effluent within the plant, and from downstream receiving waters. Stream flow contribution and plant effluent contribution required the calculation of dilution factors to determine expected numbers of the various microflora found downstream assuming no residual chlorine effect. Total chlorine concentration was measured by amperometric titration at the …

An Exploratory Investigation Of The Relationship Between Personality And Intelligence With Community-Living And Institutionalized Elderly Females, Richard D. Stolp
An Exploratory Investigation Of The Relationship Between Personality And Intelligence With Community-Living And Institutionalized Elderly Females, Richard D. Stolp
Masters Theses
The Hand Test and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale were administered to 25 institutionalized (Mage = 80.00) and 25 community-living (Mage = 72.92) elderly females to investigate personality differences between the two groups, and to explore the relationship between personality and intelligence in regard to the aged. It was discussed that the results of the present study should be interpreted with caution, since significant age and educational differences were found between the groups that may have contributed to the results. The hypothesis concerning greater personality deterioration in institutionalized subjects than in community-living subjects was given partial support inasmuch as depletion …
An Internship In Administration, Jerry Joe Newell
An Internship In Administration, Jerry Joe Newell
Masters Theses
The Field Study consisted of an internship in administration. An internship in administration in the field of vocational education appeared most beneficial to interests and objectives of the writer. The internship was served under the supervision of the director of vocational education and athletics. Activities in which the writer was involved within the athletic department offered limited value towards administrative experience beyond general supervision at athletic events. These activities were not a concern of the internship, since they would not normally be responsibilities of the vocational director.
A considerable part of the internship involved the routine management of the vocational …
The Effects Of Sulphur Dioxide On Selected Hepatics, Steven L. Gatchel
The Effects Of Sulphur Dioxide On Selected Hepatics, Steven L. Gatchel
Masters Theses
Extensive studies have been reported on the air pollutant sulphur dioxide (SO2), and its effects on vascular and nonvascular plants. It has been shown to interrupt normal physiology, metabolism, reproduction, and alter the plant’s morphology.
Of the cryptogams, lichens have been extensively used as biological indicators of air pollution. More recently, bryophytes have been shown to be as sensitive to contaminates as lichens, and may exhibit responses to the pollutant similar to those of vascular and nonvascular plants. The threshold sensitivity of these cryptogams is about 0.5 ppm over a 12 hour period. However no study to date …
Instructional Systems And Curriculum Development, Robert A. Conroy
Instructional Systems And Curriculum Development, Robert A. Conroy
Masters Theses
The field of curriculum development is one of vital significance with respect to the field of education as a whole. This field represents a complex and sometimes worrisome aspect of educational administration. Many of the problems of today's system stem from inadequacies in the curriculum.
This thesis is presented as a possible aid in the correcting of three of curriculum development's most significant concerns: relevancy, accountability, and individualization. The statement of the thesis problem is: How can the integration of instructional systems aid in making curriculum more relevant, accountable, and individual?
It is the proposal of this thesis to answer …
