The Effects Of Frozen Storage And Repeated Freeze-Thawing On Salmonella In Varied Concentrations Of Waste Activated Sludge, Joseph Toman Jr. Jan 1987

The Effects Of Frozen Storage And Repeated Freeze-Thawing On Salmonella In Varied Concentrations Of Waste Activated Sludge, Joseph Toman Jr.

Masters Theses

Commonly, waste activated sludge is applied to farmland as a fertilizer supplement and soil conditioner. The use of waste activated sludge is not only an efficient way of sludge disposal, but also an economical one. Much concern has been raised about the safety of such a practice. Harmful pathogens, like Salmonella, are commonly present in waste material. Treatment at wastewater plants is successful in eliminating these organisms from final effluent, but the solids generated are full of indigenous microorganisms, including Salmonella.

Work of this paper attempts to determine the safety of the sludge product after simulated winter conditions …

The Implementation Of A Teacher Referral Behavioral Checklist In The Identification Of Language Processing Deficits, Barbara T. Voss Jan 1987

The Implementation Of A Teacher Referral Behavioral Checklist In The Identification Of Language Processing Deficits, Barbara T. Voss

Masters Theses

The identification of language processing deficits has been acknowledged as a difficult task for the speech/language clinician. The literature has cited certain observable behaviors associated with language processing deficits, but these behaviors are often subtle enough to escape detection during routine speech and language screenings. Therefore, many language processing deficits are not identified until after the children have begun to experience academic struggle and/or failure. Several authors (Chalfant & Foster, 1974; Shepherd, 1982; Wiig & Semel, 1980) have suggested that classroom teachers may be useful in aiding speech/language pathologists in identifying these deficits. The purpose of this study was to …

A Comparison Of Norm-Referenced, Traditional, And Computer-Assisted Language Assessments, Michel P. Helmke Jan 1987

A Comparison Of Norm-Referenced, Traditional, And Computer-Assisted Language Assessments, Michel P. Helmke

Masters Theses

Current literature in the field of communication disorders suggests that traditional norm-referenced tests may yield erroneous or misleading information regarding a child's level of language acquisition. Additional research suggests that the most valid and reliable technique for determining a client's level of linguistic expertise is language sampling and analysis. Language sampling and analysis has traditionally been rejected as a means of evaluation, especially for the school-age child, due to the length of time necessary to complete such analyses. In recent years, language sampling and analysis techniques have been redesigned as computer software application programs. Computer software application programs may significantly …

Antibiotic Effects On Coliform Enumeration, Keith Leonard Wozniak Jan 1987

Antibiotic Effects On Coliform Enumeration, Keith Leonard Wozniak

Masters Theses

The inhibitory effects of Bacillus polymyxa on Escherichia coli were studied. Significant coliform inhibition was observed. The inhibitory agent (presumably polymyxin) was active against coliforms after a one hour holding time. Different suspending menstrua were analyzed for their effects on coliform inhibition. It was observed that Peptone water provided the highest recovery of coliforms while phosphate buffer provided less protection. Two methods of enumeration were also studied as to their ability to quantify coliforms inhibited by B. polymyxa. Comparable inhibition was shown using both methods. No significant differences exist between the Standard Plate Count and Membrane Filter techniques. Overall, …

Effectiveness Of A Video Recorded Ocean Scene Technique As A Relaxation Therapy, David M. Ford Jan 1987

Effectiveness Of A Video Recorded Ocean Scene Technique As A Relaxation Therapy, David M. Ford

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a video recorded ocean scene as a relaxation technique by comparing it with an established method, progressive relaxation training (Jacobson, 1938) on their ability to affect the following physiological measurements: systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Thirty female elementary school teachers participated in this study and were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: Video Recorded Ocean Scene Group, Progressive Relaxation Training Group, and Self Directed Relaxation Group (used as control). The general protocol for each treatment group consisted of a forty minute session with …

Student Perceptions Which Affect Initiation Of The Counseling Experience, Julia A. Shuppert Jan 1987

Student Perceptions Which Affect Initiation Of The Counseling Experience, Julia A. Shuppert

Masters Theses

In effort to determine student perceptions which inhibit initiation of counseling, 235 seniors from two randomly selected, mid-Illinois high schools were surveyed. The two schools were chosen according to geographic location and student enrollment. The 50 item survey consisted of 26 internal items (reasons within the student) and 24 external items (reasons lying with the counselor or counselor circumstances), which could further be divided into eleven categories: perceived lack of empathy; perceived lack of acceptance; perceived lack of confidentiality/trustworthiness; perceived counselor incongruency; perceived counselor authoritarianism; perceived counselor inadequacy; perceived problem in time or scheduling; perceived negative consequences; perceived apprehensions; lack …

Nutritional Aspects In Alcoholism Treatment Programs In Regions 3b And 2 Excluding Chicago, Koralie Murad

Masters Theses

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between nutrition and alcoholism in general, specifically how nutritional therapy and education can benefit the recovering alcoholic, and to explore the degree to which nutritional aspects have been developed and practiced in residential and inpatient programs in region 2, excluding the city of Chicago, and in region 3B as defined by the Division of Alcoholism, Illinois Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, January 15, 1980.

Procedure

A standardized questionnaire was used in a telephone survey of 40 alcoholic treatment programs in the two regions. The addresses, …

A Curriculum Review And Coordination And Articulation Study Of The Niantic-Harristown Unit School District #6, David O. Bills Jan 1987

A Curriculum Review And Coordination And Articulation Study Of The Niantic-Harristown Unit School District #6, David O. Bills

Masters Theses

Reform of the public schools is a major issue in Illinois today. Numerous reports claim that public education is mediocre at best. These reports have fostered public concern that has led to a call for school accountability that has caused those involved in education to take a close look at their schools. In this atmosphere of school accountability, a careful and thorough examination of the school curriculum by the local administration can be useful.

Strong instructional leadership from the Superintendent of Schools in a local school district is an important characteristic of an effective school. In the face of state …

An Analysis Of William Lloyd Garrison’S Accusations Against The American Colonization Society, Peggy A. Mcgill Jan 1987

An Analysis Of William Lloyd Garrison’S Accusations Against The American Colonization Society, Peggy A. Mcgill

Masters Theses

This thesis analyzes the accusations made by William Lloyd Garrison, founder of the American Anti-Slavery Society, against the American Colonization Society. The charges were based upon his publication Thoughts on African Colonization published in 1832. In the book, he insisted that the Colonization Society fostered ineffectiveness, insincerity, and inconsistency. Because of the Society's ineptitude, he regarded it as a proslavery faction dedicated to racial segregation.

The paper will focus on two important questions. First, was the Colonization Society an antislavery organization? Second, was its objective to aid free blacks or to rid America of the black race.

From hindsight, it …
