Public School Principals’ Perceptions Concerning The Hiring Of Social Studies Teachers, Lindon Joey Ratliff, Joshua Watson, Patricia Ratliff
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The authors employed a qualitative research design to explore issues pertaining to the selection and interviewing of social studies applicants for teaching positions in public secondary schools. They specifically focused on the quality of the applicant pool, characteristics of desired candidates and the school principals’ perspectives of a desired interview. Analysis of the principals’ responses to the interview questions yielded two primary categories related to their perspectives regarding potential social studies teachers: (a) personal and professional educator attributes and (b) a candidate’s actions within the formal setting of an interview. Subcategories were developed that further delineated the expectations administrators have …
Uncovering Marginalized Topics Using Webquests: From Atlanta To The Zoot Suit Riots, Gregory Samuels, Michael Berson
Uncovering Marginalized Topics Using Webquests: From Atlanta To The Zoot Suit Riots, Gregory Samuels, Michael Berson
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
A critical part of social studies instruction is involving students in making sense of social issues in the past and present to help inform their decisions in the future. Through engaged inquiry students can tackle relevant topics associated with race, class, culture, gender, language, and nationality and explore how these challenging issues mitigate people’s experiences. Moreover, these issues reflect similar tensions that students encounter in their everyday lives. Although these social issues have historical and contemporary relevance, they often are marginalized in state standards and textbooks.
Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi
Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Too often today, students have to sit idly in a history classroom listening to a lecture or reading out of a textbook which is why many people in society (adults and children alike) do not like or understand the complexity of history. This article argues that in order for students to be engaged in "doing" history in the classroom, they need to take part in problem-based learning (pbl) activities using primary sources from the past.

Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes
Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
In recent decades states have mandated brief, multiple-choice exams to assess the content knowledge of history teachers for certification. Despite the efforts of college professors to assess student learning through research papers, essay exams, and other assignments, the ability of college students to graduate and become certified to teach history depends on a passing score on a small number of multiple-choice questions. The overlooked story of how standardized testing came to shape the certification of history teachers began at least 80 years before federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Used in almost every state, such exams undermine …

Teaching Unemployment Across The Curriculum, Natalia Smirnova
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The Economics-Across-the-Curriculum approach encourages the integration of economic concepts into various disciplines. We hope that these ideas will inspire high school teachers to try them in their classrooms. Any subject area can be a fruitful ground for the infusion of economics, economic text analyses, or quantitative literacy concepts.

Trade Books’ Representations Of Benjamin Franklin, A Life Of Reinvention, Alyson Diver Thompson
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
State and national education standards require teachers to introduce historical topics through multiple diverse texts, with emphasis on informational texts. Historical based trade books allow teachers to meet both English/language arts standards as well as history/social studies standards. Primary sources help provide students with a balanced view of history that may not be covered in textbooks and trade books, allowing students to gain a more complete and accurate understandings. The standards allow educators the flexibility to select trade books and primary sources for their classrooms. My research empirically evaluated how Benjamin Franklin is represented in children’s trade books, a figure …

Boosting Chicago: Bird’S-‐Eye Views As Maps Of Progress, Mark Newman
Boosting Chicago: Bird’S-‐Eye Views As Maps Of Progress, Mark Newman
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Boosting Chicago explores the nature of bird's-eye views, the public face of Chicago views depicted between 1857 and 1916, and offers ideas on using these unique documents in the classroom. Bird's-eye views were popular lithographs of urban communities in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Subjective and incomplete documents, they were artifacts of civic pride. Though little studied by scholars or used by teachers, they offer unique windows into the perceptions of residents regarding their community. Boosting Chicago suggests that views of this city consistently pictured it as a bustling, growing metropolis that acted as a hub and tied its …

This paper examines the impact of real interest rate on the real exchange rate in Japan using Two Stage Least Square econometric techniques. The two instruments used are money supply and gross domestic product growth rates. The result provides support for the theoretical and empirical evidences of positive relationship between real interest rate and real exchange rate in Japan. The estimation also shows that there is positive relation between trade and Japanese Yen over the period considered in the study. In light of these findings, the study suggests the adoption of fiscal macroeconomic policy instruments that are capable of …

Implications Of The Ketogenic Diet On Metabolic Syndrome, Jarad Blanton
HS 5900 Project Papers
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition defined as a clustering of risk factors that is strongly associated with obesity, heart disease, and diabetes (Kahn, Buse, Ferrannini, & Stern, 2005). The prevalence of MetS has reached epidemic levels globally. It is estimated that 20% to 25% of the adult global population has MetS (Alic, 2018). MetS is diagnosed when three of the five risk factors are present. The risk factors are a large waistline (abdominal obesity), high triglyceride level, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high fasting blood sugar. The standard and most effective treatment for MetS has been lifestyle …
Women Representation On Cnn And Fox News, Ryan Burke
Women Representation On Cnn And Fox News, Ryan Burke
Student Honors Theses
Research question: What difference does a political bias matter when analyzing how CNN and Fox News portray women’s issues, the number of women guests on their shows, and how much airtime women receive.
Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that both networks will have relatively low coverage on women’s issues and guests on the show will be predominately male, but I do hypothesize that CNN will have a higher yield of women as guests on the show.
