Examining Historical (Mis)Representations Of Christopher Columbus Within Children’S Literature, John H. Bickford
Examining Historical (Mis)Representations Of Christopher Columbus Within Children’S Literature, John H. Bickford
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Effective teaching, while supplemented by best practice methods and assessments, is rooted in accurate, age-appropriate, and engaging content. As a foundation for history content, elementary educators rely strongly on textbooks and children’s literature, both fiction and non-fiction. While many researchers have examined the historical accuracy of textbook content, few have rigorously scrutinized the historical accuracy of children’s literature. Those projects that carried out such examination were more descriptive than comprehensive due to significantly smaller data pools. I investigate how children’s non-fiction and fiction books depict and historicize a meaningful and frequently taught history topic: Christopher Columbus’s accomplishments and misdeeds. Results …

Supra-Physiological Doses Of Testosterone Affect Membrane Oxidation Of Human Neutrophils Monitored By The Fluorescent Probe C11-Bodipy581/591, Tacito Pessoa De Souza Jr, Andre K. Yamada, Roberto Simao, Tatiana G. Polotow, Rui Curi, Zachary Pope, Jeffrey Willardson, Marcelo P. Barros
Supra-Physiological Doses Of Testosterone Affect Membrane Oxidation Of Human Neutrophils Monitored By The Fluorescent Probe C11-Bodipy581/591, Tacito Pessoa De Souza Jr, Andre K. Yamada, Roberto Simao, Tatiana G. Polotow, Rui Curi, Zachary Pope, Jeffrey Willardson, Marcelo P. Barros
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of supra-physiological doses of testosterone (TES) on membrane oxidation of activated human neutrophils in vitro using an innovative and sensitive technique: the real-time detection with the fluorescence probe C11-BODIPY581/591. Methodological controls were performed with the lipid-soluble and powerful antioxidant astaxanthin at different neutrophil density cultures. Neutrophils from nine healthy young men (23.4 ± 2.5 years, 174.4 ± 7.0 cm height, and 78.3 ± 7.0 kg weight) were isolated and treated with 0.1 or 10 μM TES for 24 h and subsequently labeled with the free radical-sensitive probe C11-BODIPY581/591 for monitoring …
An Assessment Of Transformation Protocols Of Trametes Versicolor: A Possible Biological Pretreatment For Biomass, Michelle Hartnett
An Assessment Of Transformation Protocols Of Trametes Versicolor: A Possible Biological Pretreatment For Biomass, Michelle Hartnett
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Lignin is an obstacle in large-scale biofuel production. This can be overcome by the use of fungal pretreatment. This experiment assessed two transformation assays, based on the protocols of Laccaria bicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and applied them to Trametes versicolor. In order to determine a successful transformation, T. versicolor was transformed with green fluorescence protein (GFP) using the two assays, followed by detection of transformed mycelia under UV light. The two protocols were assessed based on timeliness, ease, and effectiveness. Based on the quantity of viable transformants and ease, the membrane assay described for Laccaria is successful when …

Decline In Mitochondrial Respiration In Post-Ovariectomy Mice Is Ameliorated By Beta Estradiol Treatment: Insights On Alzheimer's Disease, William L. Fernandez
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The female sex hormone estrogen has potent neuroprotective properties. Some of these effects may be due to direct modulation of mitochondrial functions. I hypothesized that β-estradiol, a specific hormone of the estrogen family, will improve mitochondrial bioenergetics in ovariectomized mice. Mice (C57BL/6J, female, 4-10 months-old) were ovariectomized via bilateral incision and control animals underwent sham surgery. Ovariectomized mice were divided into two groups. One group received a subcutaneous injection of 17-β-estradiol (E2) dissolved in com oil (30 ng/g) 24 h prior to synaptosome isolation (estradiol group). The second group received com oil alone (OVX). Synaptosomes were isolated from the forebrain …

The Political And Personal Tension Between Tom Bradley And Daryl Gates, Ryan Repking
The Political And Personal Tension Between Tom Bradley And Daryl Gates, Ryan Repking
2013 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
"Los Angeles in the early 1990's was a virgining metropolis, boasting of its diversity of a world city posed to be the gateway of the pacific. Los Angeles was home to over a 100 ethnicities from all points of the globe; it was perceived to be the international city that was going to lead America into the 21st century." 1 The city's pictureous landscape of beautiful sky scrapers, however hid dangerous social and racial fault lines. In only a matter of time tensions would boil over, and two key political figures, Los Angeles Police Chief, Daryl Gates and Mayor of …

EIU Political Science Review
The EIU Political Science Review is a new online journal created specifically for undergraduate students of political science. The journal consists of a variety of high-quality, peer reviewed undergraduate papers. Nearly any type of political science paper from a EIU political science course (3000-4000) can be submitted to the journal including: position papers, analytical critiques, research papers, book reviews, case briefs, and many more. If you're interested in submitting one of your own pieces of work please read below for more information.
Taking The Road Most Travelled: Understanding Patterns Of Snake (Colubridae; Storeria) Movement And Road Mortality In A State Park, Iwo P. Gross
Student Honors Theses
Roadways negatively affect their surrounding ecosystems through the contamination of air, water, and soil resources, the dissection of populations and habitat areas, and the direct mortality of several fauna. My study assessed the significance of a number of variables that might influence the temporal and spatial patterns of road mortality in a population of Midland Brownsnakes (Storeria dekayi wrightorum). I utilized passive sampling techniques and roadwalking surveys to collect individual snakes from a road during their biannual migrations from lowland activity areas to upland forests where they hibernate. I discovered that sexually biased behavioral and natural history traits impacted an …
Mechanisms Of Freeze Avoidance In Eggs Of The Antarctic Naked Dragonfish (Gymnodraco Acuticeps) And Atlantic Tomcod (Microgadus Tomcod), Jeremy M. Carlson
Mechanisms Of Freeze Avoidance In Eggs Of The Antarctic Naked Dragonfish (Gymnodraco Acuticeps) And Atlantic Tomcod (Microgadus Tomcod), Jeremy M. Carlson
Student Honors Theses
A remarkable number of marine teleosts belonging to the perciform suborder Notothenioidei and the paracanthopterygian suborder Gadoidei (cods and their allies) have evolved biophysical and physiological adaptations that promote freeze avoidance to temperatures as low as 1oC below the equilibrium freezing point of their body fluids (Cheng et al. 2003; Costanzo et al. 1995; Howes 1991; Raymond and DeVries 1977). Among the Notothenioids endemic to the Antarctic Ocean, the naked dragonfish (Gymnodraco acuticeps, Figure 1) inhabits the ice-laden waters near McMurdo Sound where the annual water temperature remains stable at -1.87 ± 0.1oC (Komatsu et al. 1970; Bargelloni et al. …
