Facilitators And Challenges To Breastfeeding Among Postpartum Individuals In Western North Carolina, Rebecca Strasser, Liane Ventura, Melissa White-Archer, Kayla Winfield, Kate Beatty
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Breastfeeding provides health benefits for postpartum individuals and their infants. Healthy People 2030 seeks to increase 6-months exclusive breastfeeding to 42%, which has had little or no detectable change. North Carolina breastfeeding rates fall below this goal. As such, there is a continued need for research to close these gaps, particularly in South Central Appalachia. This work sought to contribute to the broader reproductive justice literature, by identifying facilitators and challenges to breastfeeding among postpartum individuals in Western North Carolina using the framework of Social Cognitive Theory. Postpartum individuals living in Western North Carolina, were recruited to complete semi-structured key …
Detection Of Jamming Attacks In Vehicular Networks, Thomas Justice
Detection Of Jamming Attacks In Vehicular Networks, Thomas Justice
Dr. Jay W. Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium [2023-2024]
A vehicular network is a type of communication network that enables vehicles to communicate with each other and the roadside infrastructure. The roadside infrastructure consists of fixed nodes such as roadside units (RSUs), traffic lights, road signs, toll booths, and so on. RSUs are devices equipped with communication capabilities that allow vehicles to obtain and share real-time information about traffic conditions, weather, road hazards, and other relevant information. These infrastructures assist in traffic management, emergency response, smart parking, autonomous driving, and public transportation to improve roadside safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the overall driving experience. However, communication between the …

Exploring Emotion Regulation As A Predictor Of Perceived Social Support Among Caregivers Of Children, Emily Hatcher, Jessica M. Templeton, Tess A. Simpson, Wallace Dixon, Diana Morelen, Chelsea Robertson
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Emotion regulation is defined as adjusting emotional responses to emotion-related stimuli in socially appropriate ways. Effective emotion regulation decreases the potential for social conflict and encourages helping behaviors that promote high-quality, supportive dyadic communications. Emotion regulation may impact the perception of available social support. Social support, or feeling cared by loved ones, also promotes mental health and an increased quality of life. Less clear is the extent to which skills in emotion regulation may contribute to perceptions of emotional support. Therefore, the primary goal of the present study was to explore whether emotion regulatory skills would be correlated with perceptions …

Pediatric Listening Effort Pilot: Gaze Vs Dilation, Erica Carter, Marcy Hite, Nicholas Giuliani
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Listening effort (LE) is a critical element of communication and quality of life. An objective way to measure LE is through pupil dilation, or pupillometry, via an eye tracker. As cognitive demands increase, the nervous system responds by increasing pupil dilation. In the case of a listening task, pupil dilation changes can be used to infer LE (Zekveld, Kramer, & Festen, 2010). While many studies test this methodology in adults, few studies have been done in children. This may be due to the increased activity/movement of children, as accurate pupil dilation measures are dependent on limited subject movement. Another eye …

Appalachian Student Research Forum
Background: Patient and family satisfaction is a critical aspect of healthcare delivery, particularly in specialized fields such as hemato-oncology. Research on patient satisfaction is gaining prominence in healthcare and patient-centered care. Satisfied patients tend to have better communication with their care providers, adhere to medication regimens and treatment plans more effectively, and pose a lower risk of medical errors. This is particularly important in today's value-based and patient-focused healthcare landscape. However, there is limited research on improving patient experience in hematology-oncology outpatient clinics catering to this population. This project aims to evaluate and improve patient and family satisfaction through the …

Topical Gels For Cromolyn Sodium Delivery In Atopic Dermatitis: Unveiling The Potential Of Sodium Salts Of Fatty Acids As Permeation Enhancers, Adela Adu Agyemang, Alanis Vang, Akeemat Tijani, Ashana Puri
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic inflammatory disorder caused by an overactive immune system. Atopic dermatitis usually develops in early childhood and is prevalent in people with family history of eczema. Several studies have suggested the use of cromolyn sodium (CS), a mast cell stabilizer, as an effective therapeutic agent for treating atopic dermatitis. This study explored the effect of the use of sodium caprylate and sodium oleate as enhancers on topical delivery of CS from a gel-based formulation. An extemporaneously prepared formulation called the Magic Masto Lotion, MML (0.3% CS), has been making waves in terms …
The Effects Of Childhood Emotional Maltreatment On Adulthood Relationships Of Minority Women: A Qualitative Study, Suzanne Aguirre, Christine Browning
The Effects Of Childhood Emotional Maltreatment On Adulthood Relationships Of Minority Women: A Qualitative Study, Suzanne Aguirre, Christine Browning
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Childhood Emotional Maltreatment (CEM) , which encompasses both childhood abuse and childhood neglect, exerts various adverse effects on brain development and response to diverse situations, particularly in relationships. Drawing from Bowlby’s attachment theory, this study investigated how relationships may be jeopardized for individuals who endured maltreatment in childhood. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of CEM on adulthood relationships, specifically parental and romantic relationships. Through interviews, we explored the emotion regulation and attachment patterns of four racial/ethnic minority women aged 20 to 27 in Appalachia––all of whom experienced emotional maltreatment during childhood––to discern the roles these …

Determinants Of Mental Health Outcome Among East Tennessee State University (Etsu) College Students, Charles Nutsugah, Kelly Foster
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Introduction: Mental health remains a critical subject affecting students' academic performance among college students (Wyatt et al., 2017). The incidence and severity of mental health issues are increasing among college students, and such issues pose a threat to health and academic performance. Previous research focused on college students' specific status, for instance, freshman year, and how mental health influences their academic performance (Chemers et al., 2001). There is scanty research that explains how certain variables provide understanding regarding outcomes that impact mental health among college students. These outcomes remain underexplored regarding influencing students' educational performances and experience (Pachucki et al., …

The Art of the Pivot:
A Collection of Animation Techniques Abstract
As an artist, my work reflects my experiences, the world around me, and the stories of others. My artist statement is deeply rooted in the belief that my art is a conduit for expressing other's stories through myself. I've always aspired for my animation skills to transcend storytelling and to tell my own stories and those of others. My journey towards my thesis was not without its share of unexpected twists and turns. These challenges, though daunting, were an integral part of my growth. My thesis journey has been …

Teaching Accounting Students To Think Critically By Engaging Them In The Classroom, Ashley B. Bentley, Michelle S. Freeman
Faculty Open Access Works
This article seeks to help faculty learn ways for accounting professors to incorporate teaching critical thinking based on research by Stephen Brookfield, a well-published expert in the field of critical thinking education. The paper will focus on how Brookfield’s research on teaching critical thinking can change the traditional accounting classroom where students passively cover content to a classroom where students engage within the content so that they develop the critical thinking skills necessary to effectively work in the profession. The authors will present three teaching methods that professors can implement in their classrooms to begin to teach students critical thinking …
