Walking into Mooney’s Pharmacy in Johnson City, Tennessee, on the day before Halloween, it’s clear that the locally owned pharmacy takes pride in how its staff serves its customers.

The store windows are painted in black and orange, decorative pumpkins and spider webs adorn the counters and shelves, and staff are dressed in a wide array of costumes.

According to Dr. Chad Huntsman—owner of Mooney’s, as well as P&S Pharmacy in Kingsport, and College Park Pharmacy in Morristown—the seasonal decorations at all three of his pharmacies not only help bring smiles to patients’ faces, but are part of a friendly …

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused severe adverse effects on the human life and the global economy affecting all communities and individuals due to its rapid spreading, increase in the number of affected cases and creating severe health issues and death cases worldwide. Since no particular treatment has been acknowledged so far for this disease, prompt detection of COVID-19 is essential to control and halt its chain. In this paper, we introduce an intelligent fuzzy inference system for the primary diagnosis of COVID-19. The system infers the likelihood level of COVID-19 infection based on the symptoms that appear on the …

The best way to learn about money management is long before you have the opportunity to make big mistakes. Dr. Nick Hagemeier understands that truth, and that’s why he’s taken the lead in making sure his pharmacy school students at East Tennessee State University are prepared when they start their profitable careers. Many of these students will make six figures when they enter their profession, and Hagemeier wants to make sure they’re ready for that type of financial responsibility.

Along with Dr. Brian Cross, Hagemeier implemented Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance curriculum several years ago, and …

JOHNSON CITY – The main project in one of Kamyl Harvey-Bogan’s classes at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine transformed into an opportunity for the fourth-year medical student to raise awareness about racial disparities in health care and bring attention to ways in which future physicians can overcome them.

Last summer, Harvey-Bogan took an elective course that taught the students how to build medical simulation cases for medical education. The students’ final assignment was to develop their own case by creating a patient, determining the patient’s background (including medical and social history), identifying the patient’s chief complaint, and …

High circulating levels of lactate and high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) are associated with the severity and mortality of sepsis. However, it is unclear whether lactate could promote HMGB1 release during sepsis. The present study demonstrated a novel role of lactate in HMGB1 lactylation and acetylation in macrophages during polymicrobial sepsis. We found that macrophages can uptake extracellular lactate via monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) to promote HMGB1 lactylation via a p300/CBP-dependent mechanism. We also observed that lactate stimulates HMGB1 acetylation by Hippo/YAP-mediated suppression of deacetylase SIRT1 and β-arrestin2-mediated recruitment of acetylases p300/CBP to the nucleus via G protein-coupled receptor 81 (GPR81). …

Meta-Techniques For Faculty Development: A Continuous Improvement Model For Building Capacity To Facilitate In A Large Interprofessional Program, S. A. Williams, Amy D. Johnson, L. B. Cross

ETSU Faculty Works

Literature regarding faculty development in uniprofessional healthcare programs is prolific; however, little has been written about instructional programs designed for faculty delivering interprofessional education (IPE). In this paper, we describe the genesis, content, and improvement of a faculty development workshop which exemplifies a meta teaching model and was designed to serve faculty facilitators in a rapidly growing IPE program. Evaluations following initial delivery of the workshops in fall 2018 returned high faculty satisfaction ratings and feedback suggesting a need for even more pedagogical training with a stronger emphasis on meta techniques and less on a review of student content. According to the WHO, 38 million individuals were living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), 25.4 million of which were using antiretroviral therapy (ART) at the end of 2019. Despite ART-mediated suppression of viral replication, ART is not a cure and is associated with viral persistence, residual inflammation, and metabolic disturbances. Indeed, due to the presence of viral reservoirs, lifelong ART therapy is required to control viremia and prevent disease progression into acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Successful ART treatment allows people living with HIV (PLHIV) to achieve a similar life expectancy to uninfected individuals. However, recent studies have illustrated the …

Snapcatch: Automatic Detection Of Covert Timing Channels Using Image Processing And Machine Learning, Shorouq Al-Eidi, Omar Darwish, Yuanzhu Chen, Ghaith Husari

ETSU Faculty Works

With the rapid growth of data exfiltration carried out by cyber attacks, Covert Timing Channels (CTC) have become an imminent network security risk that continues to grow in both sophistication and utilization. These types of channels utilize inter-arrival times to steal sensitive data from the targeted networks. CTC detection relies increasingly on machine learning techniques, which utilize statistical-based metrics to separate malicious (covert) traffic flows from the legitimate (overt) ones. However, given the efforts of cyber attacks to evade detection and the growing column of CTC, covert channels detection needs to improve in both performance and precision to detect and …

Hydroxychloroquine, initially used as an antimalarial, is used as an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory agent for the management of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Lately, there has been interest in its potential efficacy against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, with several speculated mechanisms. The purpose of this review is to elaborate on the mechanisms surrounding hydroxychloroquine. The review is an in-depth analysis of the antimalarial, immunomodulatory, and antiviral mechanisms of hydroxychloroquine, with detailed and novel pictorial explanations. The mechanisms of hydroxychloroquine are related to potential cardiotoxic manifestations and demonstrate potential adverse effects when used for coronavirus …

Academia’S Role To Drive Change In The Orthotics And Prosthetics Profession, Géza F. Kogler, Christopher F. Hovorka

ETSU Faculty Works

This position paper outlines the important role of academia in shaping the orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) profession and preparing for its future. In the United States, most healthcare professions including O&P are under intense pressure to provide cost effective treatments and quantifiable health outcomes. Pivotal changes are needed in the way O&P services are provided to remain competitive. This will require the integration of new technologies and data driven processes that have the potential to streamline workflows, reduce errors and inform new methods of clinical care and device manufacturing. Academia can lead this change, starting with a restructuring in academic …
