Bryce is a member of both the Preview and Orientation Leaders Organization (POLO) and the Expedition Leaders, two organizations that help prospective students transition in to college life. To Bryce, serving with these organizations has a personal meaning.

“I'm a first-generation college student,” said Bryce. “So, what I like to tell people that is whatever background you're coming from, ETSU is going to be an accepting place for you. The reason I tell …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Stress, Burnout, And Depression In The Iecmh Workforce, Thomas Boyer, Jessica Pooter-Rodriguez Ms., Hannah Winston Ms., Diana Morelen Dr.

Appalachian Student Research Forum

A growing trend in the psychological literature has consistently found a strong association between stress, burnout, and depression, especially in populations who are exposed to a high amount of occupational stress. And, while the relationship between stress and burnout has been distinct and strong, the same cannot be said for burnout and depression. Historically, burnout and depression have shared such a strong conceptual relationship that the literature disagreed as to whether they were truly separate mechanisms. However, while the two constructs do present behavioral similarities the underlying mechanisms which direct their presentation are subtly different. Depression is defined as a …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Thiel Cadavers Versus Low Fidelity Simulation Plastic Mannequins For Teaching Intubation Skills In Medical Education, Naveed Noordin, Shivan Berwari, Robert Becker, Tom Kwasigroch Phd, Ella Pavlyuk, Derek Wenger, Samuel Rojas

Appalachian Student Research Forum

Most medical students across the U.S. currently receive intubation skills training on low fidelity simulation (LFS) plastic mannequins. A limitation of these LFS models is that they do not allow students to attain complete familiarity and proficiency with intubation in a real-world clinical setting. For several years now, ETSU has been utilizing the Thiel embalming technique, which allows for greater joint flexibility and preservation of soft tissues compared to traditional embalming techniques. Our study set out to evaluate the efficacy of Thiel cadavers versus LFS plastic mannequins in assessing whether one model was more suitable in teaching intubation skills. After …

Screening For Adverse Childhood Experiences In Primary Care., Mary Ameh

Appalachian Student Research Forum

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) include childhood exposure to abuse or violence, a parents' divorce, mental illness, substance use disorder, and are identified as risk factors for negative life outcomes. While ACEs screenings are commonly used in mental health and pediatric settings, screening for ACEs in primary care settings is less prevalent. The purpose of this project is to integrate screening for ACEs into a primary care setting and make appropriate referrals for follow-up, thus reducing potential negative life outcomes. The process was designed for a primary care practice located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Part one assessed level of awareness …

Improving Coordinated Mental Health Care Through An Enhanced Referral Process: A Quality Improvement Project, Courtney Burleson, Lisa M. Haddad

Appalachian Student Research Forum

As the incidence of major depressive disorders continues to rise, the need for depression screening in primary care is imperative. The objective of this quality improvement (QI) project is to increase depression screening and enhance the current referral process in an urban primary care setting in the southeast United States. To achieve a projected increase in identified depression within the current and future adult patient population, workflow processes have been restructured to incorporate consistent depression screening using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and -9 (PHQ-9). Revised clerical workflow processes include initiating PHQ-9 questionnaires for all new patients, while clinical workflow …

Plants secrete peptide ligands and use receptor signaling to respond to stress and control development. Understanding the signaling mechanisms and associated molecular trafficking is key to improving plant health and productivity for food, fiber and energy applications. However, one of the challenges to elucidating communication pathways in plants is to study the trafficking of molecules and signals iteratively and non-destructively.

This study focuses on using fiber-optic fluorescence microscopy to image live plants iteratively and non-destructively after delivering both labeled and unlabeled phytosulfokine (PSK) into the plant. PSK is a sulfated peptide hormone involved in the regulation of plant cell division …
