Apocalypticism As A Predictor Of Conspiracism Among American Adults, Olivia Summers Apr 2023

Apocalypticism As A Predictor Of Conspiracism Among American Adults, Olivia Summers

Appalachian Student Research Forum

Apocalypticism is the belief in an impending large-scale catastrophic event that would threaten the survival of the human race. Despite the high level of apocalypticism among American adults, there has been little empirical research conducted to determine whether this proclivity is socially consequential. Conspiracism, a related factor, is widely studied empirically and is associated with many negative societal effects. Though research suggests a possible correlation between these variables, empirical research has not examined whether apocalypticism is a robust predictor of conspiracism. I hypothesize and test whether apocalypticism is predictive of belief in conspiracy theories using data from the 2018 Chapman …

The Impact Of Time In Doctor-Patient Encounters On Perceived Health Status Of Children With Diabetes: Potential Mediating Roles Of Shared Decision Making And Resilient Parents, Francis Okeke, Treaster Morgan Apr 2023

The Impact Of Time In Doctor-Patient Encounters On Perceived Health Status Of Children With Diabetes: Potential Mediating Roles Of Shared Decision Making And Resilient Parents, Francis Okeke, Treaster Morgan

Appalachian Student Research Forum

In 2019, diabetes affected approximately 283,000 individuals, aged 20 years or younger, in the U.S. Due to illness symptoms (e.g., hypo/hyperglycemia) and disease-related complications (e.g., nephropathy), individuals report poor health-related quality of life. However, individual-level, family-oriented, and health care system factors may affect perceptions of a child’s overall health status. For example, beliefs of having spent enough time with the doctor may predict proactive health behaviors and perceptions of health. Overall health status may also be indirectly related to time spent in medical conversations. For instance, perceptions of shared decision-making (e.g., exploring pros and cons of treatments together) between families …

Isolation And Structural Determination Of Bioactive Metabolites Produced By A Soil Bacterium, Arthrobacter Sp. Tajx1902, Amonah Arije, Andy Agbakpo, Sean James Fox, Abbas Shilabin

Appalachian Student Research Forum

As antimicrobial resistance persistently disrupts the treatment of microbial infection, identifying novel drugs with novel modes of action is critical to getting ahead of resistance. The primary goal of this project is to extract and identify novel chemical products produced by Arthrobacter sp. TAJX1902, particularly antimicrobial metabolites. Although underexplored, Arthrobacter sps. have been shown to produce bioactive compounds of great versatility; one such is a depsipeptide with quorum-sensing inhibitory activity.1 In this research, Arthrobacter sp. TAJX1902 isolated from a soil sample showed inhibitory activity against a filamentous indicator-type bacterium and a violacein-producing Janthinobacterium sp. A. sp. TAJX1902 was cultured using …

Testing Assumptions About Laboratory Protocol Fidelity, Tess A. Simpson, Wallace E. Dixon Jr., Albany Guyer Apr 2023

Testing Assumptions About Laboratory Protocol Fidelity, Tess A. Simpson, Wallace E. Dixon Jr., Albany Guyer

Appalachian Student Research Forum

A recent focus of our Program for the Study of Infancy is the extent to which lab assistants retain fidelity when implementing experimental protocols. Dixon et al. showed that experimenters’ implementations of some aspects of standardized protocols can be influenced by infants’ temperaments. Ellefson and Oppenheimer further found that procedural deviations reduce effect sizes and lead to heterogeneity of findings. In this project, we evaluated archival videos involving experimenters’ implementations of two elicited imitation tasks, “Feed Bear” and “Make a Rattle.” In both tasks, experimenters were assumed to adhere to a narrative script and procedure, which included familiarizing infants with …

Each day begins with a thorough assessment of each patient on the ID service where we assess for optimization or de-escalation of antimicrobial therapy based on patient specific parameters. Once the pharmacy team has adequately assessed each patient, we collaborate with the infectious disease providers during patient care rounds where treatment plans and drug therapies are implemented. Throughout the day we continue to trend labs, follow …

On a distant corner of rural Washington County, ETSU public health students are learning how to make brick in order to help construct homes in isolated communities around the world. Not far away, another team is assessing how to get safe drinking water to residents of a remote village, while local elementary and middle school students dig deep in honing their skills in harvesting fresh vegetables.

Outside groups, including a local Air Force squadron, also are on site periodically to participate in mock disaster scenarios or other training exercises. And in the AdaptoPlay and “Go Baby Go” areas, young children …

“He was really a positive force in our program, and I have never heard one unkind word about him from anyone. His loss has been devastating for us all.”

Dan Boner has many cherished memories of Aaron Foster, known by everyone as Frosty. Originally from upstate New York, Frosty came to ETSU with dreams of a future in bluegrass music. As a student, he performed in the Bluegrass Pride Band, recorded with other students, worked with the JAM program at University School, and ran the youth bluegrass programming for the Jenny Brook Festival in New York.
