The underlying premise was that 50 years of design research has provided us with a sound understanding of design and a solid foundation upon which to build. The interesting questions, then, appeared to us as not so much how we do more of the same – though that of course has its place – but in how we use what we now know. Hence the three broad questions that the papers in these conference proceedings respond to: How can design research help frame and address the societal problems that face us? How can design research be a creative and active …

Designing With An Underdeveloped Computational Composite For Materials Experience, Bahareh Barati, Elvin Karana, Paul Hekkert, Iris JöNsthöVel
Designing With An Underdeveloped Computational Composite For Materials Experience, Bahareh Barati, Elvin Karana, Paul Hekkert, Iris JöNsthöVel
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
In response to the urge for multidisciplinary development of computational composites, designers and material scientists are increasingly involved in collaborative projects to valorize these technology-push materials in the early stages of their development. To further develop the computational composites, material scientists need designer’s inputs regarding the physical properties and temporal behavior of the composite, as embodying an application in a context of use. Effective communication of material knowledge and design knowledge between the two disciplines (material science and design) has proven to be challenging due to their different perspectives on materials. Designing appropriate product concepts requires understanding of composite’s unique …

Cognitive Redirective Mapping: Designing Futures That Challenge Anthropocentrism, Esbentristan Schultz, Bec Barnett
Cognitive Redirective Mapping: Designing Futures That Challenge Anthropocentrism, Esbentristan Schultz, Bec Barnett
Nordes Conference Series
Humanity is facing, at both global and local levels, unprecedented challenges as the future, a byproduct of modernity, hurtles towards us. These future challenges are complex and world changing and include, but are not limited to, climate change, population growth, increasing poverty, the continuation of colonialism, war and the effects of technology. As designers we need to make use of the power that design holds not just to recognise, consider and design for these futures that we are facing but equally, to design for the ontological redirection of destructive future scenarios. To address these destructive futures and harness the transformative …
Beyond Visualization: Exploring New Thinking In Production Team Dynamics For News Websites, Yiyun Zha
Beyond Visualization: Exploring New Thinking In Production Team Dynamics For News Websites, Yiyun Zha
Nordes Conference Series
As part of a larger study aiming at understanding and improving interactive reader experiences through a study of news production team dynamics, as a complex, multi-faceted endeavour, this paper looks at the key factors affecting in-house visual journalists’ view of news production and their ability to think aesthetically. A number of impacts influenced by new technologies will be explored, followed by discussion on the rationale and development of news production processes that proposes a range of challenges for creative workers. I intend to show how these movements call for a radical reconsideration of new thinking about news web site visualization.

Different Data Detroit (+ Stockholm), Patricio Davila, Daniel Mccafferty, Rachele Riley, Joshua Singer
Nordes Conference Series
Different Data is a collaborative critical design research project by which we collect, manipulate, and display data in location-specific, and theme- driven scenarios. As research through-design and practice-based research, we investigates place and explore methods for generating and collecting data, developing an experimental approach to visualizing connections and meaning. We map hidden, overlooked and silent aspects of the urban cultural ecology. We collect narratives of cities using standard datasets transforming it to ‘different data’—that which is affective, emotional, and subjective; marginal and little-valued; esoteric and ephemeral; idiosyncratic and absurd; questionable and inappropriate. Work is executed publicly into a seamful artifact …
Re/Framing Design Trends: A Burkean Meta-Rhetorical Approach, Anneli Bowie
Re/Framing Design Trends: A Burkean Meta-Rhetorical Approach, Anneli Bowie
Nordes Conference Series
In this PhD research project I aim to investigate the rhetorical framing of communication design trends, by employing the theory of American rhetorician, Kenneth Burke. Although Burke is relatively unknown in design research circles, this study argues that he may provide valuable new perspectives on the rhetorical nature of design products, processes and discourses. Visual rhetoric is considered an important yet underdeveloped area of design inquiry, and an application of Burke’s rhetorical theories may prove valuable in addressing this need. Furthermore, I intend to show how Burke’s dialectical approach, as seen in his interrogations of historical transitions, may prove particularly …
The Roles Of Sketching In Design: Mapping The Tension Between Functions In Design Sketches, Peter Vistisen
The Roles Of Sketching In Design: Mapping The Tension Between Functions In Design Sketches, Peter Vistisen
Nordes Conference Series
This paper examines how the role of sketching in design process has been disseminated previously through a review of prior perspectives into the field. We identify that the studies of design sketching has been dominated by two perspectives: studies into what is known as ‘visual thinking’ (Goldschmidt 1991, Schön & Wiggins 1992, Tversky et al. 1999), which examines the designers reflective conversation with the sketch, and a second perspective on sketching as way of ‘visual communication’ with others in the design process (Lugt 2005, Schütze 2003, Buxton 2010). We raise the question of whether it is reasonable to combine the …

Translating Smells Into Colors: A Proposal For Improve The Perception Of Perfume Packaging Design, Camila Assis Peres Silva, Clice Sanjar Mazzilli
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The present paper is an exploratory research within packaging design for perfumes. It discusses about the possibility of enhancing the experience of the user by associating the visual language with the smells. It is common sense in the design field the importance of user experience. Designers from different areas have been discussing a way of enhance it. One of the approaches which appear in this scenario is the term (multi)sensorial. It is believed in the contribution of this approach for the packaging design. It is interest of the authors the use of color as a language in design able to …

Adaptable Interface Model For Intuitively Learnable Interfaces: An Approach To Address Diversity In Older Users' Capabilities, Gudur Raghavendra Reddy, Thea Blackler, Vesna Popovic, Doug Mahar
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This study started with the aim to develop an approach that will help designers create interfaces that are more intuitive for older adults to use. Two objectives were set for this study: 1) to investigate one of the possible strategies for developing intuitive interfaces for older people; and 2) to investigate factors that could interfere with intuitive use. This paper briefly presents the outcome of the two experiments and how it has lead to the development of an adaptable interface design model that will help designers develop interfaces that are intuitive to learn and, over time, intuitive to use for …

affiliation of medical identification jewellery with paramedics as the central user group. In doing so, we use Suchman’s notion of the affiliative object to reframe medical identification jewellery as a compound epistemic object with affiliations to paramedics in the province of Ontario, Canada. The paper begins by providing background including the methods used to assess the use of medical identification jewellery. There follows a section on how the findings from fieldwork were used to develop a first iteration of design recommendations. A compliancy table then appends discussion of key findings and design recommendations. Three design concepts were found to be …
Academic Integrity: Differences Between Design Assessments And Essays, Simon, Beth Cook, Mario Minichiello, Chris Lawrence
Academic Integrity: Differences Between Design Assessments And Essays, Simon, Beth Cook, Mario Minichiello, Chris Lawrence
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Perceptions of plagiarism and collusion in essays have occupied much research in academic integrity. This project explores such perceptions in relation to both text-based assessments such as essays and non-text-based assessment such as visual designs. The principal research instrument was an Australia-wide survey of academics and students who use nontext- based assessments. We find substantial differences between perceptions in the text and non-text environments. With design assessments, participants are less likely to think that basing work on that of another student, or using freely available material without referencing it, is plagiarism or collusion; but they are more likely to think …
Envisioning A Better Design Education: How Language Can Invite Or Discourage Collaboration, Angela L. Dow, Susanna Kelly Engbers
Envisioning A Better Design Education: How Language Can Invite Or Discourage Collaboration, Angela L. Dow, Susanna Kelly Engbers
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The possibilities for collaboration among faculty teaching in various disciplines in an art and design college are often limited by the language we use to analyze, create, and discuss our work. Although there may, in fact, be a great deal of overlap, our language sometimes obscures rather than clarifies the possibility of productive and fruitful overlap. Our paper—itself the fruit of a collaboration between a professor of graphic design and a professor of English—discusses the ways in which various constituent groups at our college talk about visuals (e.g., logos, advertisements, interiors, photographs, illustrations, etc), noting the ways in which our …
Graphic Design: Focus On Nine Professional Reflections?, Karel Van Der Waarde
Graphic Design: Focus On Nine Professional Reflections?, Karel Van Der Waarde
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Graphic designers undertake a wide range of activities in their commercial practice. The variety presents a rather confusing image of the profession and it is difficult to get a general view ‘what graphic design actually offers’. A similar difficulty arises in graphic design education where discussions about the contents of curricula need to be based on a reliable description of professional practice. Through observations of practice, and interviews with practicing graphic designers, a set of common activities, reflections and patterns were distilled. These commonalities were verified and validated through further interviews, and were compared with the literature on reflective practice …
Ecological Perception: Seeing Systems, Joanna Boehnert
Ecological Perception: Seeing Systems, Joanna Boehnert
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Graphic designers have the unique ability to make hidden ecological processes visible by revealing relationships, patterns and dynamics in complex socio-ecological systems. This paper describes how communication design can support relational perceptual practices and even nurture ecological perception. It presents specific methods to harness the latent potential of graphic design to communicate the context, comparisons, connections and causality. It proposes that aesthetics experiences can provoke deep perceptual insights supporting new ways of perceiving our relationship with the environment, our ecological context. In ways described in this paper, graphic design has the potential to nurture the ability to ‘see systems’ – …
Design As Rhetoric In The Discourse Of Resonance, Veronika Kelly
Design As Rhetoric In The Discourse Of Resonance, Veronika Kelly
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design that is effective by way of having an influence and impact on a human subject’s belief, behaviour, or action is a key concern of designers in the field of visual communications. Because of these aspects, one discourse that has grown in scholarly circles over recent decades is that design is a form of rhetoric. Nonetheless, the way that rhetoric has been applied to design practice itself – as a means of analysing the communicative function of designed artefacts and to posit propositions for practice – has remained largely theoretical. The purpose of this paper is to extend an understanding …
Tool Complexes Of Innovation: Spaces For Explorative Innovation In Four Manufacturing Industrial Companies, Jennie Schaeffer, Yvonne Eriksson
Tool Complexes Of Innovation: Spaces For Explorative Innovation In Four Manufacturing Industrial Companies, Jennie Schaeffer, Yvonne Eriksson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Providing an environment in which both radical innovation and continuous improvement can exist, i.e. an ambidextrous environment, is one of the biggest challenges management faces. While having an ambidextrous organisation is of central importance to the competitive advantage of a firm, there is limited understanding of how to manage it. In this article, we are reporting on our research on the design of workspaces and the relations between design and ambidexterity in innovation. We studied the workspaces as artefacts in innovation cultures. We analysed relations between users and spaces that could enable an explorative innovation culture to emerge, and found …
Communication Design As An Agent In Creating Gender Equality In India, Nicola St John
Communication Design As An Agent In Creating Gender Equality In India, Nicola St John
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Developing from the field of behavior change through design, this study investigated if communication design is an effective tool in changing cultural behaviors and perceptions of gender in India. Previous studies on gender violence campaigns (Gadornski, 2001; Murphy, 2009; Kostick et al., 2011) suggest utilising men and traditional gender stereotypes are effective in creating behavior change. Yet there exists a gap on specific cultural roles and changing ingrained behaviors. This study focuses on the necessary recognition of cultural traditions and behaviours that must precede any design activity within an epistemological setting. Developing communication strategy within sensitive and complex social issues …
Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos
Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Geography and design have much in common. Both draw from or reflect science, social science, humanities, and employ sophisticated technology to achieve their aims. However, aside from a mutual interest in urbanism, there appears to have be little collaboration between the two. And yet some aspire for design to learn from geography. In this paper we explore how the characteristics associated with geography and design may function together in a space-and-place modelling-and-making dialectic.
Enhancing Visual Meaning: Measuring Visual Communication Design Effectiveness, David Craib:, Lorenzo Imbesi
Enhancing Visual Meaning: Measuring Visual Communication Design Effectiveness, David Craib:, Lorenzo Imbesi
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Visual messages are pervasive throughout modern societies, being continually disseminated and consumed through various channels, such as portable communication technologies, computers, television and print. Visual communication designers are tasked to create and produce highly perceivable and meaningful visual messages that populate these visual channels, but lack the science-based tools to ensure their designs are effective before they are disseminated. A set of visual communication design criteria and tools, aimed to increase design research effectiveness, will be derived through research focusing on three communicationrelated disciplines, including perception psychology, data visualization, and semiotics. These criteria and tools will then be applied to …
Qualitative Study Of Smartphone Use: Subjective Experience Of Time Through Personal Ubiquitous Technology, Yong-Ki Lee, Kun-Pyo Lee
Qualitative Study Of Smartphone Use: Subjective Experience Of Time Through Personal Ubiquitous Technology, Yong-Ki Lee, Kun-Pyo Lee
DRS Biennial Conference Series
We explore Smartphone use in Korea to develop a grounded theory on the experience with personal ubiquitous technologies. The preliminary theory that emerged during our data analysis centres on the role of changing time experiences in the use of Smartphones. Within this interpretation, we theorize that the Smartphones are used through tactics of accelerating, broadening and defragmenting time perceptions in order to control the experience of time. These tactics are. Finally, we support this notion of temporal qualities by proposing the three time-related factors for personal ubiquitous technologies of Speed and Acceleration, Incidental Interactions, and Intrinsic Technology Integration.

Bombs Away: Visual Thinking And Students’ Engagement In Design Studios Contexts, Marianella Chamorro-Koc, Andrew Scott, Gretchen Coombs
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In design studio, sketching or visual thinking is part of processes that assist students to achieve final design solutions. At QUT’s First and Third Year industrial design studio classes we engage in a variety of teaching pedagogies from which we identify ‘Concept Bombs’ as an instrumental in the development of students’ visual thinking and reflective design process, and also as a vehicle to foster positive student engagement. Our ‘formula’: Concept Bombs are 20 minute design tasks focusing on rapid development of initial concept designs and free-hand sketching. Our experience and surveys tell us that students value intensive studio activities especially …
Design Vs. The Design Industry, Joanna Boehnert
Design Vs. The Design Industry, Joanna Boehnert
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Sustainable design; systems; epistemology; environment crisis; capitalismDesign can be understood as a practice that evolves as new cognitive and perceptual capacities enable a greater understanding of complexity, context and system dynamics. These emergent capacities create greater potential for social and technological innovation. This paper will argue that despite emergent skills, designers are not able to effectively address contemporary problems in a sustainable manner due to the systemic priorities of the design industry. This paper theorises “design” as the professional practice of creating new products, buildings, services and communication as a broader practice than the work that is produced within the …
Starting A Conversation: The Need For And Application Of Service Design In International Development, Ruth Edmonds, Mary Rose Cook
Starting A Conversation: The Need For And Application Of Service Design In International Development, Ruth Edmonds, Mary Rose Cook
ServDes Conference Series
International Development is concerned with the provision of public services and development programmes in contexts where resources are scarce and states are often fragile. Service design has much to offer the kinds of problems faced by International Development organisations. In this paper; we open a conversation about the need for; and application of; Service Design in International Development; focusing on two of its core principles; collaboration and user-centeredness. We also unpack some problematics that need attention when applying a Service Design approach to International Development programming.

A Phenomenographic Pilot Study Of Students’ Conceptions Of Design Research, Jesvin Puay-Hwa Yeo
Learn X Design Conference Series
In view of the current inadequacies of design research, a group of art and design researchers have urged for alternative research methodologies, which is challenged by opposing views that a formal research structure and a rigorous research should similarly be applied to design research. To address these divergent views, this paper aims to explore the potential use of formal research procedures in design research. This study uses the phenomenography method as the basis of its research design. Focusing on visual communication studies at undergraduate level, this paper is a documentation of the development and implementation of the formal research procedures …
Constructing Design Knowledge Built Up On The Kindergarten Education, Meryem Yalcin
Constructing Design Knowledge Built Up On The Kindergarten Education, Meryem Yalcin
Learn X Design Conference Series
This study aims to further the growing body of knowledge about design education with an alternative view; discussing the importance of beginning it at the kindergarten which ideally suits to the approach " develop the creative-thinking skills". In an environment where children" imagines, creates, practices, modifies, recognises, manipulates, shares etc..." knowledge, experiences and objects through play are crucial issues in the design education. Derived from this concern the study brings the argument of advancing and directing early childhood education on the basis of 'basic design issues' such as design principles, conceptualization, 2D/3D spatial allocation and composition more comprehensively which will …
